Newcastle make fresh approach in race to sign "excellent" England int'l

With their sights set on the January transfer window, Newcastle United have reportedly already made an early approach about signing a 2026 target for Eddie Howe.

Newcastle's January transfer targets

Even though the summer transfer window just slammed shut, rumours are already beginning to arrive regarding potential 2026 deals. That should come as no surprise for Newcastle fans, however.

The Magpies endured a tumultuous summer before eventually welcoming the strikers that they so desperately needed, but were forced to take their focus away from other areas. Now, with Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa at the club, PIF have the chance to address the other concerns that Howe may have about his squad.

One of those could come in central midfield. As strong as Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton are together, there may be some concerns about the drop-off in quality when any of those three are missing. And whilst Jacob Ramsey’s arrival may help in that regard, those at St James’ Park are still eyeing improvements.

According to recent reports, Newcastle have set their sights on signing Kobbie Mainoo if the chance arrives in January. The Manchester United midfielder was denied the chance to leave Old Trafford on loan in the summer and was told by Ruben Amorim to fight for his place. Just how long he puts up with doing that is the question that Newcastle and others will have when the winter window arrives.

In a World Cup year, players who find themselves on the fringes of their current sides will be ones to watch. It’s not just Mainoo who’s struggling with that problem. Alongside him, Newcastle are also reportedly eyeing another England international.

Newcastle make approach to sign Gallagher

According to The Boot Room, Newcastle have made an approach to sign Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid in January. The Magpies have reportedly made contact asking to be kept informed about the England midfielder, who is growing frustrated by his bit-part role at the Spanish club.

If Atletico Madrid make the former Chelsea man available, then the likes of Manchester United, Newcastle and Crystal Palace are all reportedly ready to race towards his signature. Given that he just started against Liverpool in the Champions League, however, it seems as though Diego Simeone is still keen to find a place for Gallagher in his side.

A player who needs no introduction to English football, the 25-year-old once found himself at the centre of Gareth Southgate’s praise. The former England boss was pleased with how he worked his way back into the Three Lions’ set-up in a similar way to how he could now do so under Thomas Tuchel.

With Newcastle setting their sights on his arrival and the World Cup approaching, there’s no doubt that Gallagher is already one to watch for the January transfer window.

Arsenal had Lewis-Skelly 2.0 in Hale End "monster", then he left for £0

It wasn’t a vintage performance from Arsenal last night, but they did what they needed to do against Port Vale and are through to the Fourth Round of the League Cup.

With that said, while much of the team underwhelmed against the League One side, Myles Lewis-Skelly was one of those who didn’t.

For example, he got the faintest of touches on the ball that led to Eberechi Eze’s goal, and then, across the 94 minutes, completed 76 of 78 passes, was successful in 100% of his dribbles, and won 100% of his duels.

It was the sort of showing that should remind fans and pundits alike just how special a talent the Hale Ender really is.

Moreover, it’s a testament to him that he’s already an established first-teamer, as Arsenal had a young prospect who some could say was the original Lewis-Skelly a few years ago, and he eventually left the club for nothing.

Lewis-Skelly's incredible rise at Arsenal

It’s almost hard to believe, but at this point last year, Lewis-Skelly had played just a minute of senior competitive football for Arsenal when he came off the bench against Manchester City in the league.

Impressively, though, and perhaps as an indication of his willingness to get stuck in, the teenager actually received a yellow card early on in that game before he’d even made his debut for telling his teammates to stay down from the sidelines.

His first start for the club came a year ago tonight, however, as Arteta put him in from the start against Bolton Wanderers in the League Cup, and it didn’t take long for him to play a brilliant ball into Raheem Sterling, which led to an Ethan Nwaneri goal.

Over the next few months, the young Englishman would become more and more critical to the team, as persistent injuries to Riccardo Calafiori gave him the time to cement the left-back position as his own.

In fact, the teenager was so impressive in red and white that he was handed his first senior England cap in March of this year, when he made his debut against Albania and scored his first international goal.

The “fearless” academy star, as dubbed by Declan Rice, ended up making 39 first-team appearances last season and already has four under his belt this year, looking like he could really be going to the World Cup in the summer.

In all, Arsenal have an incredible talent on their hands in Lewis-Skelly, and he looks destined to reach the top of the game, unlike another young defensive prospect they had who eventually left for nothing.

Arsenal's original Lewis-Skelly

As with every major club, Arsenal has had numerous promising young academy talents who have struggled to make the transition to the first team.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

Unfortunately, that was what happened in the case of the very talented Reuell Walters.

Before joining the Gunners academy set-up in 2020, the 20-year-old ace spent 18 months without a team following a failed move to Manchester United after he left Tottenham Hotspur.

However, that time out of junior football seemingly made no difference to his ability when he did make it to Hale End.

For example, across the almost four years he spent with the Gunners, the Lambeth-born gem made 55 appearances for the U21S, 20 for the U18S and five for the UEFA Youth League squads.

Moreover, he was very highly rated by those in the know, with respected analyst Ben Mattinson describing him as a “ball-carrying monster” who “loves to drive up the pitch with conviction, brushing off challengers and shielding the ball with his body.”

Mattinson then goes on to claim the youngster’s “passing ability is technically secure” and that he “looks to play long balls over the top of the opponent’s defence to switch play.”

In other words, he was seen as a young full-back who was tough on the ball, could carry it with ease and still had a killer pass in his locker, which sounds a lot like Lewis-Skelly.

However, even though he was an unused substitute on a number of occasions, it was clear that the young Englishman wanted more first-team football. As a result, he turned down a new contract and instead joined Luton Town for free in July 2024.

Since then, he’s made 20 appearances for the Hatters, and while that might not sound like much, he is still young and missed 15 games through injury last season.

Ultimately, it’s now clear that Walters was never going to hit the levels of Arsenal’s recent Hale End stars, but given his age and the skills he has, there is every chance he can still have a great career in the game.

Bukayo Saka makes history with England goal against Wales as Arsenal star becomes club's top scorer for Three Lions

Bukayo Saka etched his name into history on Thursday night, becoming Arsenal’s all-time leading men’s goalscorer for England after netting a stunning strike against Wales. Just a day after celebrating five years since his Three Lions debut, the 23-year-old produced a trademark curling finish to register his 13th goal for the national team and surpass Gunners' legend Cliff Bastin’s record.

  • Saka etches his name in England and Arsenal history books

England eased past Wales in a commanding 3-0 friendly victory at Wembley, with Saka providing the moment of magic that sealed the win. The Arsenal winger scored England’s third of the night with a sensational right-footed effort from the edge of the box, leaving goalkeeper Karl Darlow with no chance. Earlier in the evening, Morgan Rogers had opened the scoring inside three minutes before Aston Villa teammate Ollie Watkins doubled the lead soon after.

Saka's strike took his England tally to 13 goals, surpassing Bastin’s long-standing record of 12 to become Arsenal’s top-scoring men’s player in Three Lions history. The goal came almost exactly five years after the Gunners star made his England debut — coincidentally against Wales — in October 2020.  Saka’s curling effort not only capped off a dominant first-half display but also underlined his growing influence as one of England’s most decisive attacking outlets.

Saka: Putting Hale End back on the map

Saka’s milestone underscores his evolution from a talented teenager to one of the Premier League’s most complete forwards. For Arsenal, his success with the Three Lions represents a proud moment — no player in the club’s history has contributed more goals to England’s cause. It’s a record that places him ahead of icons like Bastin, Tony Adams, and Ian Wright, reflecting his unique blend of longevity, versatility, and impact on the international stage.

His rise has coincided with England’s transformation into a global powerhouse. From breaking through during Euro 2020 to starring at the 2022 World Cup, Saka has been a constant presence in England’s new golden generation. Under new boss Thomas Tuchel, he remains central to the system, in a team built around young stars like himself, Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden.

The 23-year-old’s achievements also highlight Arsenal’s resurgence as a producer of elite English talent. While many of the club’s past stars made their mark in domestic competitions, Saka’s sustained impact on the international stage marks a modern shift — proof that Arsenal’s Hale End academy continues to nurture players capable of leading their country.

  • Saka's Three Lions journey – highs and lows

Saka has amassed 45 caps and scored 13 goals, evolving into one of the Three Lions’ most consistent and creative forces. His first international goal came in June 2021 against Austria, marking the beginning of a prolific run that has seen him score in every major competition he’s played.

At Euro 2020, Saka was one of England’s breakout stars, shining in knockout games against Germany and Denmark. His journey, however, was not without adversity — he missed the decisive penalty in the final against Italy, prompting widespread support after suffering racial abuse online. Rather than letting the setback define him, Saka responded with maturity, becoming England’s Player of the Year in 2023 and netting a memorable hat-trick against North Macedonia in Euro 2024 qualifying.

At the 2022 World Cup, he scored three goals, including a brilliant brace against Iran, proving his ability to perform on football’s biggest stage. His consistency and versatility have made him indispensable for every England manager he’s played under. Now, under Tuchel, Saka’s role remains vital — his pace, composure, and tactical intelligence make him one of the first names on the team sheet whenever fit.

Saka key to England's 2026 World Cup hopes

Saka’s record-breaking goal further solidifies his place as one of England’s modern greats, and with several years ahead of him, the tally is likely to grow. He will now turn his focus to England’s upcoming fixtures as Tuchel continues fine-tuning his squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup. With qualification virtually secured, the manager is expected to keep building around the Arsenal man’s creativity and cutting edge.

Scholfield, Wyatt-Hodge steer Surrey to comfortable win in Blast opener

Somerset batters graft to post 131 for 6 but come up well short in final analysis

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay30-May-2025Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Paige Scholfield raised a match-winning stand of 112 as Surrey women launched their Vitality Blast campaign with a convincing eight-wicket win over Somerset at the Cooper Associates Ground, Taunton. Both hit half-centuries, Scholfield top-scoring with an enterprising 63 from 48 balls with 11 fours, while former England star Wyatt-Hodge made 53 not out from 35 deliveries in a sparkling innings that included six fours and a six as the visitors chased down a modest target with 4.3 overs to spare to claim a bonus point.Put into bat, Somerset struggled to build partnerships, lost early wickets and came up short at 131 for 6, Alex Griffiths top-scoring with an unbeaten 37-ball 36 and Bex Odgers contributing 27. Surrey’s spinners made scoring difficult, Tilly Corteen-Coleman taking 2 for 21 and Danielle Gregory 1 for 18 from four tight overs. It was a disappointing outcome for Somerset, who were watched by a crowd of more than 2000. Surrey skipper Bryony Smith won the toss, elected to field and watched her bowlers make crucial early inroads during a powerplay in which the home side flattered to deceive.Amelie Munday came out swinging on debut and contributed 12 in an opening stand of 39 in four overs with Odgers before dragging a delivery from Ryana MacDonald-Gay onto her stumps. Alexa Stonehouse struck another blow for Surrey in the next over, having Emma Corney held at backward point, while Corteen-Coleman comprehensively bowled Fran Wilson as Somerset lost three wickets in seven balls, finding themselves in need of a rebuild at 47 for 3 in the sixth.Unperturbed, the no-nonsense Odgers continued to take the aerial route, accruing a quartet of fours in hurrying to 27 from 20 balls, only to then blot her copybook by offering a return catch to Gregory and departing with the score on 54 for 4. Seeking to stabilise the innings, the experienced pair of Sophie Luff and Griffiths were necessarily cautious in advancing the score to 74 for 4 at the halfway stage.Somerset’s fifth-wicket pair had added 34 in 5.3 overs and were looking to launch when Luff, who had scored 22, took on Phoebe Franklin and sliced high to Corteen-Coleman at short third man.Griffiths and Amanda-Jade Wellington attempted a change in tempo, but the latter fell for 11, attempting to reverse sweep Corteen-Coleman and finding point as the hosts slipped to 111 for 6 after 17 in the face of accurate bowing. Scoring at a run-a-ball, Griffiths did her utmost to haul Somerset to a competitive total, providing a flourish at the death in partnership with Chloe Skelton. But the visitors had good reason to feel satisfied with their work in the field.Somerset needed early wickets and Ellie Anderson removed Smith for 4, Surrey’s captain sending a top-edged pull shot to backward point in the second over. But Wyatt-Hodge and Scholfield quickly redressed the balance, finding the gaps with regularity and ruthlessly exploiting the poor ball, advancing the score to 44 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.Australia spinner Wellington kept the second wicket pair in check for a time, but there was a certain inevitability about proceedings as the partnership realised 50 from 35 balls. Growing in confidence, Wyatt-Hodge plundered a straight six off Wellington as the boundaries began to flow and Somerset’s fielding became ragged under pressure.Surrey reached halfway on 86 for 1, at which point the required rate was under five an over and the outcome a foregone conclusion. Playing fluently by now, Scholfield was first to 50, attaining that landmark via 37 balls with her ninth four, a straight drive at the expense of Wellington that also brought up the hundred partnership. Wyatt-Hodge brought up her half century from just 33 balls, seeing the job through after Scholfield had been bowed by Olivia Barnes.

Amorim upgrade: "Best coach in the PL" would now "love" to manage Man Utd

Manchester United’s situation on the pitch is one that needs a rapid change in the coming weeks, especially if boss Ruben Amorim is to save his job at Old Trafford.

The 40-year-old will mark a year in charge in just over a month’s time, but it remains to be seen if he will reach such a landmark given the Red Devils’ dismal displays in recent weeks.

His men have lost three of their first six Premier League matches in 2025/26, whilst also being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two Grimsby Town.

Such results see the club occupy a place just above the relegation zone, just as they did last campaign, whilst already missing out on the opportunity to win a piece of silverware this season.

As a result, pressure has rapidly been building on Amorim’s shoulders, with numerous options already being lined up by the hierarchy should they decide to make a change of manager.

The latest on Man Utd’s shortlist of Amorim replacements

After winning the FA Cup and Community Shield within the last few months, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has emerged as one of the options United could turn to if Amorim is sacked.

Such a move would be an excellent appointment, but it remains unclear at this stage whether the Austrian would be open to a switch to Old Trafford given his recent success at Selhurst Park.

However, he’s not the only manager currently in their sights, with Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola another option under consideration, according to TEAMtalk.

Their report claims that the Spaniard “would love” to take over at the Theatre of Dreams, with such a move reflecting his rapid rise in his managerial career.

It also states that the 43-year-old only has one year left on his contract at the Vitality, with the Cherries potentially having no choice but to allow him to depart in order to gain a compensation package.

Why United’s manager hunt could see an Amorim upgrade arrive

After joining last November, it’s safe to say no United fan would have expected the club’s form to take a further nose-dive after Amorim filled the hot-seat after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal.

The Portuguese boss arrived with huge expectations after winning two Liga Portugal titles during his spell in charge of Sporting CP – even beating Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League prior to his move to England.

However, the 40-year-old has only achieved a 39% win rate in his 49 matches at the helm, with the defeat against Brentford last Saturday, the 21st of his tenure.

Such a result made it nine losses in the club’s last 15 league matches, with promoted sides such as Sunderland and Leeds United already ahead of them in the current standings.

A change is desperately needed, with a move for Iraola offering the Red Devils the fresh impetus they’ve desperately craved over the last couple of months.

AFC Bournemouth manager AndoniIraolalooks dejected after the match

Should he join the club, the first team would no doubt go back to a 4-2-3-1 system, something which Amorim has refused to do, but also offering the hierarchy an improvement on the man currently at the helm.

When comparing their respective stats in the Premier League, the difference is there for all to see, with the Spaniard a perfect option to right the wrongs of the last 12 months.

Iraola, who in the words of journalist James Horncastle – via John Brewin of the Libero podcast – is the “best coach in the Premier League”, has achieved a 40% win rate at the Vitality, a rate higher than that of Amorim, winning 38 of his 94 matches in charge – subsequently doing so on a shoestring budget.

He’s also achieved a better point per game rate to date, with his side also conceding fewer goals per 90 – subsequently offering the Red Devils the needed defensive quality they’ve lacked.

The former Rayo Vallecano boss led the Cherries to a top-half finish last time around, something which Amorim was unable to do with a vastly more expensive squad at his disposal.

There’s no denying that the 40-year-old is on borrowed time, with the hierarchy desperately needing to make a decision soon to avoid another embarrassing campaign.

Should he be given his matching orders, it’s clear that Iraola would be a phenomenal option, with the Spaniard’s desire to make the move another reason why he should be the man to transform the club’s fortunes.

MI's playoffs rejig: Moody bullish on Bairstow, Asalanka; Jaffer wants more from Tilak

After Mumbai Indians’ (MI) batting performance against Punjab Kings (PBKS), the feeling was that their batting did not come together enough to maximise their potential. Openers Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton scored 51 together in 41 balls – a cumulative strike rate of under 125 – while Tilak Varma made one run in four balls later.Despite Suryakumar Yadav’s 39-ball 57, that consolidated his spot at No. 3 on the Orange Cap table, and a handful of cameos, PBKS overcame the target of 187 with ease. Now, moving into the playoffs, where MI face either Gujarat Titans (GT) or Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Eliminator, they will lose Rickelton and Jacks – two of their key overseas players this season – to national duty. However, that’s not entirely a bad thing, according to Tom Moody. He feels the addition of Jonny Bairstow and Charith Asalanka, both temporary replacements, will bring some fresh energy into their batting.”I don’t mind the fact that they’ve got some fresh players coming in, because it’s probably what they need,” Moody said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show. “In a funny sort of way, it’s a way of putting to bed what’s happened against PBKS and just moving on quickly. And they’ve got two very good replacements.Related

  • MI sign Bairstow, Gleeson, Asalanka as temporary replacements

  • IPL playoffs: How can RCB and GT make it to the top two?

  • Arshdeep, Suryakumar gain on Purple and Orange Cap tables

“It’s not like MI are at odds to whether to play them or not play them. Bairstow’s there. He’s an IPL proven player. He’s come in with this opportunity in some very good form for Yorkshire. Asalanka has been a good player for Sri Lanka for some time now. He’s going to be very handy in that middle order, a good player of spin, can also offer an over of spin or two.”So I don’t think for Mumbai it changes their dynamic much at all. I think, if anything, they look just as good.”Wasim Jaffer, though, thinks Bairstow – coming into the IPL on the back of red-ball cricket in seamer-friendly conditions with Yorkshire – could face some challenges adjusting, and put the onus for making runs in the powerplay on MI’s Indian contingent.”I think the Indian players need to step up,” Jaffer said. “You know, you can’t expect too much even from Bairstow – he’s not had a very outstanding IPL in the last few seasons, and he’s coming from a red-ball cricket in seam and swinging conditions in Yorkshire in April and May. So, you know, he hasn’t played much white-ball cricket recently. So it could go either way. It’s a twin-edged sword. But I think like Rohit, Surya again, Tilak and Naman [Dhir], those are the guys they need to step up in the coming games.”

‘A chance for Tilak to bat freely’

Tilak has had a tough season where he was retired out once by the management. He followed it up with half-centuries in back-to-back games, but has averaged 10.75 in his last five innings. Even though he came out at No. 4 against PBKS, he has largely batted at No. 5 with Jacks at one-drop and Suryakumar at No. 4.Jacks’ departure, though, opens up one top-order batting position in the MI line-up, and Jaffer believes that can unlock Tilak’s potential.1:45

Jaffer: ‘Tilak needs to be more aggressive against spin’

“I think Will Jacks, playing in this MI lineup, he had to bat at No. 3, if not open. And that has affected Tilak Varma’s entry point because you can’t, you know, send Suryakumar Yadav at No. 5. So that has affected his numbers,” Jaffer said. “But once Jacks goes, you automatically see Tilak batting at No. 3, Suryakumar at No. 4 and maybe Asalanka at No. 5. So I think that’s going to help.”But what I liked when he was called out after being retired, the couple of innings that he played after that, you know, showed his mentality because it could have gone the other way around. But he stuck around, played two match-winning knocks. And that says a lot about Tilak Varma.”I just feel he needs to be a little bit more aggressive against spin. He can do that. We’ve seen in South Africa when he’s got back-to-back hundreds. But he just kind of holds himself [back]. He hasn’t played as freely as he does at No. 3. But once the playoff comes and he gets his No. 3 [spot], coming in to bat in the powerplay, you might see a different Tilak Varma.”Moody agreed with Jaffer’s proposition: “The obvious change for him is he’s probably coming into bat when spin is on. Yes, so that’s the challenge to get going straightaway, where in previous seasons, he’s probably faced a dozen, if not more, balls against pace. And he’s got some sort of rhythm to his game before spinners come on and he can fire straight away.”

Not just Aaronson: "Superb" star has saved his Leeds United career

Leeds United will not head into the international break on the back of a positive result, but they will head into it off the back of a positive performance against Tottenham Hotspur.

The result did not fall their way, because of deflected goals from Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus, but it was a performance that should have left supporters feeling positive heading into the rest of October.

The Whites were incredibly unfortunate to come away from the clash at Elland Road with nothing because they created enough chances to potentially win the game, let alone to get a point.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was guilty of missing a huge opportunity to score in the first-half when he fired high and wide after Noah Okafor won the ball back in the Spurs box.

As you can see in the table above, that was one of four ‘big chances’ created by the hosts, and Okafor was the only player who managed to convert one.

That goal from the Switzerland international was ‘created’ by Brenden Aaronson’s shot that was spilled by Guglielmo Vicario, in what was another promising display from the USA international.

How Brenden Aaronson has revived his Leeds career

It is fair to say that there were doubts over whether or not the American attacking midfielder would be a useful player for Daniel Farke in the Premier League heading into the 2025/26 campaign.

As you can see in the graphic above, Aaronson failed to deliver a single goal or assist in ten appearances against the other five teams in the top six in the Championship last season, which shows that he struggled against high-quality opponents.

The 24-year-old lightweight also managed just one goal and three assists in 36 appearances in the Premier League for the Whites in the 2022/23 campaign under Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia, and Sam Allardyce, per Sofascore.

Farke changing the system from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-3-3 cast further doubt over Aaronson’s potential involvement this season, as he played as a number ten in last term’s promotion-winning side.

However, the former RB Salzburg star has found a home for himself on the right wing in the 4-3-3 system, starting four Premier League matches so far, and has shown signs of promise on the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Aaronson is unfortunate not to have an assist to his name in the division, as he has created three ‘big chances’ in four starts so far.

The Leeds winger has also provided quality out of possession with his impressive work rate on the flank, winning 2.2 tackles and interceptions per game and the majority of his physical battles on the deck.

His work rate off the ball and the creativity that he has shown with the ball at his feet has helped him to revive his Premier League career with the Whites this season.

Aaronson is not the only player who appears to have revived his career at Elland Road, though, as another star has emerged as a surprise key player for Farke.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

An injury to summer signing Lucas Perri has provided Karl Darlow with a run of matches to prove himself in the Premier League, and he has shown that he can be relied upon to be the team’s number one.

How Karl Darlow has revived his Leeds career

The Wales international joined the Whites from Newcastle United on a permanent deal in the summer of 2023 to be the back-up to Illan Meslier in the Championship.

Darlow started one match in the Championship in the 2023/24 campaign, because Meslier was suspended, and started the 2024/25 campaign as the second-choice once again.

However, the Frenchman’s poor form between the sticks meant that the Welshman was eventually given an opportunity to shine. He kept four clean sheets and prevented 0.74 goals, per Sofascore, in seven outings in the second tier as Leeds earned promotion to the Premier League.

The Whites then swooped to sign Perri from Lyon for £15.6m in the summer transfer window to be their new number one, which suggested that they did not believe that Darlow could make the step up. Unfortunately, Leeds United’s new signing endured a difficult start to life at Elland Road, conceding 1.99 more goals than expected in his first three appearances, per Sofascore, before picking up an injury.

That injury has provided the Wales international with a chance to prove himself and he has grasped it with both gloves, impressing in several matches in the Premier League.

Darlow, who was hailed as “superb” by reporter Graham Smyth, was even nominated for save of the month for September with his terrific acrobatic stop to prevent Kevin from opening the scoring for Fulham.

During the 3-1 win over Wolves, Smyth claimed that the goalkeeper was doing his best Superman impression, as he “brilliantly” tipped a shot over the bar.

As you can see in the table above, Darlow has outperformed Perri in his outings in the Premier League this season, both as an out-and-out shot-stopper as well as with his distribution out from the back.

-1.9 goals prevented may not jump out as an impressive statistic for the Welshman, but it is worth noting that he ended the Spurs game with -1.40 goals prevented, which was harsh given that Pascal Struijk deflected both goals past the goalkeeper.

His overall statistics, though, show that he has been more effective than Perri between the sticks for Leeds, which is why Farke should keep him in the XI even when the Frenchman is back and available for selection.

Therefore, Darlow has revived his career at Elland Road by stepping up and taking his chance when it came his way, delivering quality performances in the Premier League, and, hopefully, there is more to come from the 34-year-old.

Barcelona and Real Madrid set for free transfer war over Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano amid Man Utd interest

Bayern Munich could face a major blow as Dayot Upamecano’s contract standoff opens the door for a transfer battle between Barcelona and Real Madrid. With talks stalling over a new deal, the French centre-back’s uncertain future has also drawn interest from Manchester United, setting up a fierce pursuit ahead of the winter transfer window.

  • Upamecano's future in doubt as contract talks stall

The French international Upamecano’s situation at Bayern has reached a critical juncture as the 26-year-old defender, a key part of Vincent Kompany’s defensive setup, has yet to agree terms on a contract extension beyond 2026. According to reports, negotiations have slowed over wage demands, with the Frenchman’s camp pushing for a salary package closer to €15 million per year and a significant signing bonus. While Bayern remain optimistic of keeping him long-term, the risk of losing another top player for free, as they did with David Alaba, looms large.

  • 'stay for a long time' – Bayern's position

Bayern president Herbert Hainer has reiterated the club’s stance on keeping the French international, saying: “Negotiations are continuing to extend his lease. Of course, we would like him to stay with us for a long time.” However, reports in Germany suggest that Upamecano’s entourage is holding firm, unwilling to make concessions in talks. Sporting director Max Eberl is leading efforts to secure an agreement before the player becomes eligible to negotiate pre-contract terms with foreign clubs in January.

  • Barca and Madrid prepare to clash for his signature

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have now entered the picture, with the Spanish giants reportedly seeing Upamecano as an ideal defensive reinforcement. reports that “a new Clasico is likely to be played out on the transfer market, with Dayot Upamecano as referee.” Real Madrid view him as a potential replacement for Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba, while Barca are positioning themselves to strengthen a backline that has struggled with injuries. Behind the scenes, both clubs are moving early to outpace rivals and secure the Frenchman’s commitment.

Man Utd and Premier League sides are also watching closely

Interest isn’t limited to Spain, it has extended to a great degree in England as well, as United have been monitoring Upamecano’s situation closely, alongside Liverpool, as part of their long-term defensive rebuilds. The French international, capped 34 times for Les Bleus, remains one of Europe’s most complete centre-backs, combining pace, power, and composure on the ball. Having already won the Bundesliga and DFL-Supercup, Upamecano remains central to Kompany’s plans, but uncertainty over his future could test Bayern’s resolve in the coming months.

Meanwhile, Bayern are expected to hold a final round of talks with Upamecano’s representatives in the coming weeks in hopes of reaching a compromise. If no agreement is found, the player will be free to negotiate with other clubs in January. With all elite European clubs circling, Bayern’s handling of this situation could shape their defensive future and wage structure for years to come.
