Newcastle offered former Barcelona star who Emery wants at Aston Villa

Newcastle United are in the market for quality January reinforcements, and Eddie Howe may now be set to rival Unai Emery for a former Barcelona star.

Newcastle set to make inroads for January signings

The Magpies are still in the hunt across four separate competitions under Howe. Nevertheless, the Premier League will be their immediate priority, especially given the fact they are well in contention for a continental qualification slot despite a mixed campaign.

Speaking before his side took on Leeds, the former Bournemouth boss indicated in his pre-match press conference that he has held internal talks about potential January arrivals, but there is nothing deemed to be too far down the line at this point.

He said: “There’s only been very loose discussions over the transfer window as well because we’re in the middle of a really busy spell of games. I think we’re all aware – Ross (Wilson) included – that our injury situation will dictate what happens in the market.”

Reinforcing in the full-back areas appears to be on the agenda for Howe, and Newcastle have identified Brentford defender Michael Kayode as a January target amid Kieran Tripper and Tino Livramento’s frequent injury issues.

The next Anderson: Newcastle make "superb" £52m star a top target

Newcastle United could pick up their next Elliot Anderson this January if they successfully land one of their top targets.

ByKelan Sarson

After coming close to landing him in the summer, the Geordies could also make a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Plates are beginning to spin in the transfer window, and it remains to be seen how many players Howe will identify to deepen his squad, though if reports are to be believed, he could land his latest target at a financially advantageous rate.

Newcastle offered chance to sign Oscar Mingueza

According to Mailsport, Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza, and he has also been pitched to Aston Villa and West Ham United as a market opportunity.

Valued at around the £8 million mark due to his contract being set to expire in the summer, Emery retains a known admiration for the former Barcelona man, as detailed by Fabrizio Romano after he held talks over a move to the Midlands-based outfit.

In the case of Newcastle, Mingueza is a versatile presence who can feature in either full-back position or further up on the flanks, proving his worth with a goal and three assists in 21 appearances this term.

Now set for a new challenge, he would either be attainable at a modest January fee or even on a free transfer this summer. However, gambling on a player of his talent still being available in six months time is a dangerous game to play.

Spurs flop proved vs Brentford why he must be sold after Brennan Johnson

Tottenham Hotspur kicked off 2026 in fairly underwhelming fashion as they were held to a 0-0 draw in the Premier League by Thomas Frank’s former side Brentford.

To say that it was a game bereft of quality would be an understatement. Per Sofascore, neither side created a single ‘big chance’ in the 90 minutes, and Spurs ended the game with just 44% of the possession and two shots on target.

Such a toothless display from the Lilywhites may leave some supporters questioning why Brennan Johnson is set to be sold to Crystal Palace for £33.5m.

The Wales international was the team’s top goalscorer in the 2024/25 campaign, with 18 goals, and has scored 27 goals in 106 matches for the club to date, per Transfermarkt.

Why Spurs are right to sell Brennan Johnson

Despite some of his goalscoring exploits during his time in North London, Johnson should be sold by the Lilywhites because he has not offered enough to the team in his general play.

Johnson has a great knack for finding space at the back post to score, as shown in the clip above, but his lack of creativity and quality in possession in deeper areas took away from his goal threat.

The Welsh forward has scored two goals, provided 0.4 key passes per game, and failed to register a single assist in 16 Premier League games so far this term for Spurs, per Sofascore, which shows how little he has offered the team as a creative presence.

Over the last 356 days, as shown in the chart above, Johnson ranks among the worst attacking midfielders and wingers in the five major European leagues in virtually every key possession or creation-based metric that a winger should be judged on.

That is why Spurs are right to cash in after Palace’s £33.5m offer, as they could look to sign a more well-rounded winger, but the Welshman is not the only dud who should be sold this month.

The Spurs flop who should be sold after Brennan Johnson

Pedro Porro’s wasteful performance against Brentford in the Premier League on Thursday night proved that he has to be the next player to be sold after Johnson in the January transfer window.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Last month, TEAMtalk reported that Manchester City were showing significant interest in a deal to sign the Spain international from the Lilywhites in 2026, which suggests that there is at least one club that would be willing to take him away from North London.

Spurs should take advantage of that interest and cash in on him, as they are about to do with Johnson, as he put in another disappointing display against the Bees.

Per Sofascore, Porro failed with all three of his attempted crosses and only made one key pass, without creating a single ‘big chance’, whilst he lost possession of the ball a whopping 18 times.

The Spanish right-back has not offered enough quality as a creative threat, with one assist in 19 Premier League appearances, to justify how many times he gives the ball back to the opposition.

As you can see in the table above, he has lost possession at least 20 more times than every other player in the entire division, in every position, which illustrates just how incredibly wasteful he has been.

That wastefulness was on display again against Brentford, completing just 76% of his attempted passes (Sofascore), and that is why Spurs should cash in on him, amid recent reported interest from Manchester City.

On top of that, Porro also leads the entire Premier League in errors that have led to shots for the opposition, with five, per Sofascore. No other player in the league has made more than four.

If the Cityzens, as Palace are with Johnson, are willing to pay a significant fee to take Porro away from North London, the Lilywhites should jump at the chance to part ways with him.

Big Johnson upgrade: Spurs preparing bid to sign £69m Premier League star

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly preparing a move to sign a star who could be an upgrade on Brennan Johnson.

The Spaniard’s defensive errors, coupled with his wasteful play on the ball, suggest that now is the right time for him to move on from the club.

West Ham eye Isco offer

As per reports from Spain, there has been an update on West Ham United’s transfer pursuit of Real Madrid playmaker Isco.

The Lowdown: West Ham set for big summer?

After failing to strengthen in a January transfer window to forget for the Hammers and David Moyes, reports have suggested that they could be busy in the summer to make up for last month’s radio silence.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-3/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

There have even been rumours of West Ham board members potentially bankrolling mega-money strikers bids in an attempt to back the club.

While a lot could depend on the result of their quest for Champions League football, there has been another transfer update out of West Ham, this time involving 38-cap Spain international Isco.

The Latest: GSB willing to offer Isco great terms…

According to reports from Spain, West Ham are one of the four teams ‘fighting’ to sign the Galacticos midfielder who is set to leave on a free at the end of this season.

It is believed that the club, and by extension owners GSB, ‘would offer’ Isco a ‘good contract’, the possibility of playing in the Premier League and a guaranteed starting place under Moyes, something that the player himself ‘is looking for’.

The Verdict: Right move?

Once valued at £100m by Real Madrid, it is debatable whether Isco is exactly what Moyes needs at West Ham right now.

Cutting a bit-part figure under Carlo Ancelotti this season, the ex-Malaga star would also probably have to take a pay cut on his rumoured £210,000-per-week wages to join the Irons at the end of the current campaign.

By comparison, long-time target Jesse Lingard will also be available as a free agent and could be a better option given his Premier League experience and the fact that he is already proven under Moyes, under whom he had a superb loan spell this time last year.

Kulusevski could dethrone Son at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur could have a new king in town…

Son shocker

For a long time, Heung-min Son has been one of the standout performers for the club and to some extent he still is. After all, he leads the way for goals scored (ten) and creativity (five assists, 45 key passes) in the Premier League.

However, his recent form has been rather questionable and whilst it could be attributed to burnout having played so many matches this season (only three players have managed more minutes), at 29 years of age, it could be time to think of the future amid some pretty poor showings.

For instance, in the defeat to Burnley, he failed to register a single shot on target, whilst against Championship outfit Middlesbrough, none of his four attempts on target resulted in a shot as Spurs crashed out of the FA Cup in extra time.

It was a performance that Press Association journalist Jonathan Veal described as “shocking” on social media at the end of the 90 minutes.

This is likely just a blip for the South Korean sensation but he isn’t going to be around forever and now that there’s a new man in town, his place isn’t as secure as it once was.

Swedish successor

“Gimme, gimme, gimme a ginger from Sweden, Number 21, His name is Kulusevski.” is what the Lilywhites faithful have already been singing around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It’s fair to suggest that Dejan Kulusevski has made an instant impact at the club ever since he arrived from Juventus on deadline day.

The 21-year-old has already made seven appearances in the past month, in which three have been starts in the Premier League, where he has provided two goals and one assist, via Transfermarkt.

That’s a direct goal contribution once every 111 minutes. If he keeps that up, then that’s on par with Son over the course of his near seven-year Spurs career.

The similarities do not stop there either.

Kulusevski has recently been lauded as a “dangerous” player who’s just like the 29-year-old by journalist Paul Brown.

“He’s like Son, very good at bombing forward on the break. He’s not afraid to take people on and he’ll have a shot or two,” he told GIVEMESPORT.  “He’s looked quite dangerous since he’s been there, and I think he’s going to be a goal threat and will score goals.”

Whilst initially joining on an 18-month loan, Spurs do have a £29.2m option to buy and that will undoubtedly be triggered should he continue to light it up this season.

Conte has even described the £27m-rated Sweden international as a “perfect player” for Spurs to The Athletic, whilst Italian Football expert Nima Tavallaey Roodsari once dubbed him a “monster”.

If anyone’s going to dethrone Son, then Kulusevski seems like a pretty likely candidate and on recent form alone, it’s the latter who deserves a place in Conte’s starting XI.

Celtic: Kieran Devlin drops Jota update

Celtic correspondent Kieran Devlin has claimed that Jota should be back for the weekend after missing the Scottish Cup quarter-final through injury.

The Lowdown: Jota’s absence

Jota, who has been a regular for the majority of the campaign, missed seven games prior to the winter break due to injury and was missing from the Hoops squad again on Monday evening.

Ange Postecoglou’s side ran out 3-0 winners at Tannadice and will now face Rangers in the semi-final at Hampden Park, looking to take another step towards a domestic treble.

The Celtic manager, who labelled the Portuguese winger as ‘unbelievable’, said the 22-year-old was missing due to a knock, while Liel Abada also missed out due to illness.

The Latest: Devlin shares news

Devlin ran a Q&A on The Athletic ahead of Celtic’s clash with Dundee United on Monday.

He relayed news regarding Jota and Abada, posting that the pair should both be back for the visit of Ross County on Saturday.

“Abada and Jota should both be back for the weekend against Ross County it seems.”

The Verdict: Phew

Plenty of Celtic fans may have been extremely worried after not seeing Jota or Abada in the squad on Monday, so this update is a real relief.

Jota has looked extremely dangerous during his season-long loan, contributing to 18 goals in 29 games and creating 49 chances. [BBC]

The Hoops need all their stars available as we enter the crunch stage of the season, so losing Jota for an extended period of time would have been a big blow. Thankfully, that is not the case, and we may see Jota running down the wing at Celtic Park once again this weekend.

Celtic: Ange drops Johnston injury update

Ange Postecoglou has dropped a promising injury update regarding Celtic winger Mikey Johnston.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments on the club’s YouTube channel (cited by 67hailhail), the 56-year-old confirmed that, after featuring in Celtic B’s 5-0 win over Partick Thistle in the Glasgow Cup earlier this week, the forward will be available for the Scottish Cup quarter-final clash with Dundee United on Monday, having been out of action since limping off against Raith Rovers in mid-February,

Speaking about the current condition of the former Scotland under-21 international, Postecoglou said: “Mikey missed a couple of weeks. Mikey, Karamoko [Dembele], Johnny [Kenny] got some game-time and they’re available. That means they got through the game okay.

“They obviously had [Thursday] off because they played but they’ll be back training with us on Saturday and they’re available. Mikey is in the same boat as everyone else. To be fair, it’s not easy because if you come to our training at the moment, I’ve got an easy job. I could probably pick two or three different XIs and still come out looking like a genius.”

Huge boost

While Johnston is not exactly a guaranteed starter for Postecoglou, the reports that he now appears to have recovered from his injury will nevertheless come as a huge boost to the Celtic manager and the Parkhead fan base.

Indeed, with the Bhoys still battling in both the Scottish Cup and the Premiership title race, rotation will be necessary for the 56-year-old over the season’s run-in over the coming months, should Postecoglou wish to give his side the best possible chance of sealing a domestic treble this term.

As such, with Kyogo Furuhashi still appearing to be some way off making a recovery of his own – which means that Daizen Maeda is required to fill in for his Japanese team-mate up front, instead of being utilised on the left wing – the fresh addition of Johnston to the manager’s options on the left of his front three is undoubtedly a huge bonus.

Leeds: Jesse Marsch should unleash Kalvin Phillips vs Wolves

This is part of The Transfer Tavern’s Talking Tactics series, where we analyse two changes a manager should make in their upcoming fixture.

Leeds United travel to Molineux this evening to face Wolves, looking to build on Jesse Marsch’s first win as manager against Norwich last time out.

The Whites have the chance to stretch the gap between themselves and the relegation zone and have Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper available for selection for the first time since December, meaning Marsch has some tough selection decisions to make.

Kalvin Phillips starts

Leeds have missed Phillips in recent months, with Marsch now going with a double six in midfield compared to Marcelo Bielsa’s 4-1-4-1 system.

Phillips is used to playing in a similar role for England alongside Declan Rice, so it would make sense for Marsch to hand the 26-year-old an immediate start, given he has selected three different midfield options in his three games as boss. [SofaScore]

Adam Forshaw and Mateusz Klich were picked against Norwich, meaning one of those two would have to make way for Phillips to come in, and having been selected as the Three Lions’ player of the year in this exact role, starting the returning superstar is a no brainer.

Pascal Struijk axed

Struijk hasn’t had the best of times under Marsch despite playing every minute of action under the new boss.

He was outperformed by Luke Ayling against Leicester, failed to make an interception against Aston Villa and was outperformed again by Diego Llorente against Norwich. [SofaScore]

Marsch now has Cooper, Leeds’ best-rated centre-back, as per WhoScored, available to play, so it could make sense to hand Struijk a rest. Robin Koch is another option to come in for start, although that would leave Leeds with two right-footed centre-backs, providing Llorente keeps his place in the side.

West Ham: Jarrod Bowen setback

West Ham United star Jarrod Bowen could miss both legs of the Hammers’ Europa League quarter-final against French side Lyon, with the 25-year-old’s injury worse than initially believed.

What’s the latest?

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Englishman’s injury is ‘worse than first feared’ after fracturing a bone in his foot against Liverpool earlier this month.

West Ham had confirmed that the winger suffered ‘no significant damage’ following the injury on 6 March but it now appears as though Bowen will have to spend more time on the sidelines.

Supporters will be gutted

Having scored 12 goals and assisted 11 in 39 appearances this season, the Englishman is certainly up there as a seriously strong contender for West Ham’s player of the year.

This campaign has seen the 25-year-old playmaker develop excellently, building on last season’s tally of eight goals and six assists.

In fact, it was recently revealed to The Athletic by David Moyes that Bowen looked likely to have received his first-ever senior England call-up had he not sustained his injury.

The Scotsman said: “I hope we’ve got England internationals (at West Ham). We’ve got Declan Rice at the moment. With a bit of luck we might have had Jarrod Bowen if it hadn’t been for injury.”

Whilst his record in front of goal is his best in claret and blue to date with two months left of the season, most of those goals have come in 2022.

Since the turn of the year, Bowen’s form has been electric, scoring seven and assisting one in all competitions.

The major concern for Moyes and the West Ham faithful will be how much longer they’re going to be without their best goal output for with vital games fast approaching after the international break.

Michail Antonio hasn’t scored in the Premier League since New Year’s Day whilst Pablo Fornals has two goals in his last 17 league appearances and Said Benrahma scoring once in his last seven.

With the race for a top-six finish still very much on and a Europa League quarter-final still to contest, the Hammers will be desperate to have their talisman back in contention as soon as possible as it could cost them a place in Europe next season.

Sunderland had a blunder with Brad Friedel

Sunderland have had their fair share of transfer successes and disasters over the years as they have felt the wrath of the window as well as the joy of it.

Not all moves work out as it is impossible to guarantee that a player will be able to fit in with the squad and consistently perform on the pitch.

Whilst it is easy to look at the transfers that did happen and judge them, you can also look at prospective switches that didn’t go through in the end.

According to The Sunderland Echo, one player the Black Cats attempted to land was Brad Friedel for £600k in 1995 as Peter Reid looked to snap up the shot-stopper. The move fell through due to a work permit issue, despite him having played for Newcastle’s reserves earlier in 1994.

Instead of moving to Wearside, he sealed a transfer to Turkish giants Galatasaray. The giant kept 15 clean sheets in 37 appearances before moving back to the MLS with Colombus Crew, playing 45 times and keeping 13 clean sheets for the American outfit.

He then found his way to England as he secured a switch to Liverpool in 1997. This suggests that Sunderland did not get in quickly enough as soon as he was eligible for a work permit, as their interest in 1995 indicates that they would have had an advantage over their rivals as they already did their homework on the goalkeeper and had spoken with him previously to agree the £600k transfer.

Friedel endured a mixed time with the Reds as he kept eight shutouts in 31 outings across three seasons. Blackburn snapped him up from Anfield in 2000 and this is where his career exploded as he enjoyed a sublime spell with the Lancashire side. He played a whopping 355 matches for the club and kept the opposition out 118 times in what was a magnificent spell at Ewood Park.

The USA international ended his career with Aston Villa and Tottenham, making 198 appearances between the two clubs – keeping 55 shutouts.

Mark Bosnich previously lavished the veteran with praise, saying: “I remember talking to my then-agent Graham Smith and saying ‘this boy is really talented.’

“He then arrived at Liverpool, had a bit of a tough time, but since then his form for Blackburn and Villa has been absolutely outstanding.

“He is like a fine wine – as he’s got older he’s got better and better. Fair play, even when I first saw him he was very talented and he’s developed brilliantly.”

Overall, the monster ended his career with 450 appearances in the Premier League and 132 clean sheets between the sticks. He enjoyed a fantastic spell in England and Sunderland missed out on his talents, which is why this failed transfer was a blunder by the club as he was one that got away…

Tottenham player set for January exit talks after returning from injury

Tottenham find themselves navigating a challenging period as the north Londoners sit 14th in the Premier League table after an uninspiring run of form.

Manager Thomas Frank is also facing mounting scrutiny over results that have left supporters questioning whether the Danish tactician is the right man to turn things around.

The 2-1 loss against Liverpool represented Tottenham’s fifth defeat in eight Premier League matches under Frank. The contest was decisively tilted in the visitors’ favour after Xavi Simons received a first-half red card for a reckless studs-up challenge on Virgil van Dijk, which left Spurs battling for over an hour with 10 men.

The match was further marred by Cristian Romero’s stoppage-time dismissal for kicking out at Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate.

As a result, both Simons and the Spurs captain will now miss crucial upcoming fixtures through suspension amid a congested festive fixture list.

Attention now turns to the January transfer window as Tottenham’s hierarchy prepare to back Frank, with the manager confirming they ‘will’ be in the market next month.

Unfortunately for the Lilywhites, recent developments have forced the recruitment team to reassess their primary targets following disappointment in their pursuit of Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo.

Spurs are craving a new left-winger.

ByEmilio Galantini

Media sources confirm that Tottenham have withdrawn from the race to sign Semenyo, with the 25-year-old making clear his preference to join Man City.

The Premier League title contenders are emerging as frontrunners to trigger the winger’s £65 million release clause that becomes active on January 1, with the race intensifying as clubs have just 10 days to activate it next month.

The north Londoners are identifying alternatives to Semenyo, including some left-field names like Ajax sensation Mika Godts, but the list could include Man City’s Savinho or Omar Marmoush.

Amid these evolving transfer plans and the scramble to identify suitable plan Bs to Semenyo, Tottenham must now address an internal situation too.

Tottenham defender Radu Dragusin set for January exit talks

Radu Dragusin reportedly wants to discuss his role at N17, with interest in the centre-back heating up ahead of January.

The 23-year-old has not featured for Spurs since suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury back in January, which ruled him out for the remainder of last season.

In Dragusin’s period of rehab, 2025 signing Kevin Danso has impressed as a backup to first-choice partnership Romero and Micky van de Ven, with questions now surrounding his role in the team.

The Romanian made his first appearance in a matchday squad for 11 months against Liverpool, with Frank naming him on the bench to face Arne Slot’s side, but following his long-awaited return from injury, Italy could be beckoning.

According to reporter Alessio Lento, Dragusin is attracting serious January interest from two unnamed Serie A clubs, and the former Genoa star is poised to hold showdown talks with Spurs over his future.

The defender’s situation adds another layer of complexity to Tottenham’s January planning, as they balance the urgent need for attacking reinforcements whilst maintaining adequate depth at the back.

This is particularly pressing given Romero’s suspension and the mounting injury concerns that have left Frank short of options in multiple positions.
