Pakistan keep faith in unchanged XI for series decider against England

Selectors hope turning pitch will vindicate retention of three-pronged spin attack

Pakistan will field an unchanged starting eleven from the one that beat England by 152 runs in the second Test for the final game in Rawalpindi. The PCB announced the side one day after England confirmed a change in their bowling combination to match the triple-spin attack that proved successful for Pakistan in Multan. It is the first time in Shan Masood’s stint as captain that Pakistan have named an unchanged eleven. The decision is not a surprise, though there was a chance Pakistan may switch up their combination to replace Zahid Mahmood, who bowled just six ineffective overs in Multan, with a seamer. But an injury to Mir Hamza, their preferred choice, scuppered any chance of that happening. The decision is a leap of faith in the curators’ attempts to force the Rawalpindi surface to behave more like the one for the second Test in Multan. Historically, Pindi has never taken much spin, even late into Test matches; just two Tests ago on this surface, Pakistan went in with an all-pace attack against Bangladesh in August.Related

Since the gamble in Multan paid off last week, though, preparations for a repeat have gone into overdrive. The curators were in Pindi before the second Test ended, with Aleem Dar and Aqib Javed, part of the selection committee, making the trip on the day the game ended.Over the weekend, industrial sized fans and wedding-style heaters were brought in, with windbreakers surrounding the surface. The heaters were gone by Monday, though the giant fans were working. Some footmarks are visible on the strip, notably outside the left-hander’s off-stump at the media end. Each side have a left-arm spinner, a finger spinner and a legspinner in their bowling ranks.”It’s an interesting pitch,” Jason Gillespie, Pakistan’s head coach, said. “Since I’ve been here, there’ve been fans on which we’ve all seen. So obviously it’s very dry and not a lot of grass on it. We probably expect it to favour the slower balls here.”The series is level at 1-1. Pakistan are looking for their first series win since a 2-0 victory in Sri Lanka in July, and a first at home since they beat South Africa in February 2021 by a similar scoreline.Pakistan: 1 Saim Ayub, 2 Abdullah Shafique, 3 Shan Masood (capt), 4 Kamran Ghulam, 5 Saud Shakeel, 6 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 7 Salman Agha, 8 Aamer Jamal, 9 Sajid Khan, 10 Noman Ali, 11 Zahid Mahmood

Is Hugo Ekitike second choice already?! Liverpool striker insists fresh competition from £125m man Alexander Isak will be coach Arne Slot's 'problem'

Hugo Ekitike is looking forward to playing alongside new Liverpool signing Alexander Isak, as the Frenchman claimed that he is not worried about the competition. Ekitike has made a bright start to his journey at Anfield, scoring three goals in his first four appearances. Yet the English champions went ahead and completed the blockbuster signing of Isak on deadline day.

Ekitike made a mark right from the word go by netting three goals in his first four matches for the Reds, including two Premier League strikes. However, his place as a No.9 could now come under threat, following Isak's arrival. The Swede has performed consistently in the Premier League for the past two seasons as the Magpies' first-choice striker and has more experience of English football than his French counterpart.

WHAT EKITIKE SAID

Ekitike, however, is not concerned about the competition, as he insisted that it was Arne Slot's responsibility to figure out the right combination. Speaking to reporters, the France international said: "When you play for the best teams, you inevitably expect to be competing with the best players. Isak is a player I used to watch, so seeing him arrive is a pleasure. It's going to be tough competition, but I'm going to work hard to be good and perform well so that it's just the coach's problem."

Pakistan turn it around to clinch series 2-1 after Sajid, Noman special

Pakistan 344 (Shakeel 134, Sajid 48*, Noman 45, Rehan 4-66, Bashir 3-129) and 37 for 1 (Masood 23*) beat England 267 (Smith 89, Duckett 52, Sajid 6-128, Noman 3-88) and 112 (Root 33, Noman 6-42, Sajid 4-69) by nine wicketsThe wait is finally over. For the first time since 2021, Pakistan have won a Test series at home, coming back from 1-0 down to confirm a 2-1 success over England.A comprehensive nine-wicket win on day three of the third and decisive Test in Rawalpindi arrived before lunch, achieved with so little fuss that England’s victory by an innings in the opening match feels like it belongs in a different series altogether. It is only the second time Pakistan have come from behind in a series and the first time they have done so at home.Just as it was in the first innings, and indeed the victorious second Test at Multan, Noman Ali and Sajid Khan ran riot, bagging all 10 wickets as England were snuffed out for 112 in a listless second innings performance. It was Noman’s turn to pocket the match ball with 6 for 42, a sixth five-wicket haul, while Sajid’s 4 for 69 registered a second 10-wicket match of his 10-Test career after 6 for 128 on the first day. That left a nominal chase of 36 on the table, which was still enough for beleaguered home skipper Shan Masood to indulge in a cathartic 23 from six deliveries. He clouted four successive fours against Jack Leach upon his arrival to the crease after Saim Ayub was trapped leg before, then sealed victory with a towering six off Shoaib Bashir.Prior to Masood walking off with Abdullah Shafique, Noman and Sajid had done so hand in hand, basking in the glory of instigating England’s day three collapse in which the final seven wickets fell for just 46, and the fact their introductions turned the series on its head. Since being drafted into the squad after the tourists took a 1-0 lead, they have managed 39 wickets between them – Noman’s left-arm spin taking 20 at 13.85, Sajid’s off breaks 19 from 21.01.And yet, things began serenely enough for England. They started Saturday 53 behind on 24 for 3, but in Root and Brook, they had two batters capable of chipping off that deficit, and then some.Related

When Brook began the 13th over by striking Sajid for back-to-back fours – first through cover, then over mid off on the charge – the more pessimistic Pakistan fans might have been wondering if the Yorkshire pair were about to embark on another match-tilting partnership. After all, it was these two who combined for all of 454 in the first Test at Multan. However, that was before Sajid and Noman entered the series. And after the former adjusted his line to keep Brook honest, the latter followed up a slow delivery with one far quicker that was cut late into the gloves of Mohammad Rizwan. Pakistan’s lead had been cut to 11, but the first domino had been toppled. Others duly followed.Stokes’ troubles against spin continued, inexplicably leading a straight delivery from Noman, expecting turn from over the wicket that never came. Jamie Smith’s charge to Sajid was almost as bad, bowled off stump through a wild swing that belied the sensibilities he had displayed with a load-bearing 89 in the first innings. It was only four balls after Smith’s dismissal that England went ahead, and what hopes they had of extending that in a meaningful way ended when Root was snared by a pearler from Noman with a lead of eight. Perfect dip onto a length to drag the right-hander forward from around the wicket, before just enough spin – it was a delivery the 38-year-old had served up a few times but only Root was good enough to nick. ASajid tagged in to lop off the tail, yorking Gus Atkinson before knocking back Rehan Ahmed’s leg stump for his second 10-wicket match haul. And he looked to have bagged a second five-for in the match when Shoaib Bashir was given out LBW on the sweep.A cursory DRS review came back in the No.11’s favour, with the impact onto the pad coming outside off stump. The reprieve only brought an extra two runs, as Noman caught Leach lacking on the charge, firing one wide of the advancing left-hander, stumped smartly by Rizwan.A lead of 35 was always going to be light work on a pitch that was far from demonic, but it was Masood’s introduction that ensured formalities were completed inside 3.1 overs. Ayub began the chase with a brace of fours at the end of the first over before Leach pinned him in front, confirmed via DRS after another erroneous call from umpire Sharfuddoula. But even his dismissal brought some icing to the cake, as Masood took the team charging over the line for his first series win as captain. After starting his tenure with six straight defeats before the second Test of this series, It was hard to begrudge him that honour.

Mead played a key role as England's Lionesses won the European Championship for the second consecutive time this summer. The theme of substitutes sealing victory during the tournament was replicated in Arsenal's opening-day WSL victory, as Mead laid on two goals for fellow substitutes Stina Blackstenius and Frida Maanum in the closing stages.

It has been an incredible few months for Mead, who also tasted Champions League glory with the Gunners over Barcelona in May. The 2022 BBC Sports Personality of he Year winner has had a career laden with success and this latest record of 51 WSL assists only adds to an ever-growing legacy for the 30-year-old. Interestingly, newly-promoted London City Lionesses reportedly attempted to sign her in the summer before Mead inflicted opening-day misery on the club.

Brook goes past Root to become the No. 1 Test batter in the world

Travis Head and Temba Bavuma among batters and Pat Cummins and Matt Henry among bowlers to have moved up this week

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Dec-2024Joe Root isn’t the No. 1 Test batter in the world anymore. The man he said was “far and away the best player in the world at the minute”, Harry Brook, has gone to the top of the pile following his 123 and 55 in the second Test in New Zealand, which came on the back of a 171 in the first Test, which had taken him to the second spot. It’s a slender lead at the top for Brook, though, just one point, with Root doing his cause no harm with a 106 in the second innings of that second Test, which England won by 323 runs to go 2-0 up in the three-Test series. Indeed, how the two of them go in the third Test, starting December 14 in Hamilton, could well determine if Brook stays No. 1 or Root takes back his crown almost immediately.Root had held the top spot since he went past Kane Williamson – currently No. 3 – in July this year. He has been the top batter in Test cricket nine times over his career.Full rankings tables

Brook was named Player of the Match in Wellington and Root was quick to shower praise on his younger colleague. “Brooky is by far and away the best player in the world at the minute,” he had said. “He can absorb pressure, he can apply it. He can whack you over your head for six. He can scoop you over his head for six. He can smack spin. He can smack seam.”Just 25, Brook has scored 2280 runs from 38 innings across 23 Tests, and currently averages 61.62. Those numbers include eight centuries, including a mammoth 317 against Pakistan in Multan in October 2024.Travis Head and Temba Bavuma move upIt has been a busy time for Test cricket on the whole, with Australia hosting India in a five-match series – of which two have been played so far – and South Africa beating Sri Lanka 2-0 at home earlier this week.Travis Head, who hit 140 in the first innings of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Adelaide to set up Australia’s ten-wicket win, has zoomed up six spots to fifth, while Temba Bavuma’s 78 and 66 in the second Test in Gqeberha took him up three places to seventh on the table.Bavuma, in fact, was named Player of the Series for his tally of 327 runs.Marnus Labuschagne, who signalled a bit of a return to form in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide, has also moved up following his 64 in the first innings, going up three spots to get to 13th.ESPNcricinfo LtdCompetition for Jasprit BumrahJasprit Bumrah, the top-ranked Test bowler, strengthened his position with a four-wicket haul in the first innings in Adelaide, but Kagiso Rabada, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins are not too far behind.Hazlewood missed the second Test, but Cummins’ seven wickets in the Test took him up from fifth to fourth past R Ashwin, while Rabada held on to his second spot – he has 856 points to Bumrah’s 890 – after picking up three wickets in Gqeberha.Matt Henry was the other quick bowler to move up within the top ten, his four wickets in Wellington moving him up from tenth to ninth place.

Hilton Cartwright has been cleared of serious injury after spending a night in hospital following a fielding mishap late in the BBL season-opener between Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers at Optus Stadium. In the 13th over of Scorchers’ chase, Cartwright sprinted from deep point as he attempted to prevent a boundary from Scorchers batter Cooper Connolly. He sprawled across the turf in a full-bodied dive towards the rope but appeared to jar his neck and was instantly in discomfort.Cartwright remained face down and did not move in frightening scenes as Stars captain Marcus Stoinis ran over and waved towards his team’s medical staff. Play was halted for 10 minutes while Cartwright was attended to before he was stretchered off in a mini-ambulance with the support of a neck brace.Related

Connolly extends Scorchers' dominance over Stars on opening night

“Melbourne Stars batter Hilton Cartwright has been cleared of any serious damage to his neck whilst fielding in last night’s match against the Perth Scorchers,” a club statement said on Monday morning.”Cartwright underwent scans and spent overnight in hospital but has now been released and will rejoin the squad in Melbourne in the next few days. A return to play will be determined once he is back in Melbourne.”Cartwright, who plays for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup, left the ground to warm applause from the 30,649 crowd. After crossing over from Scorchers ahead of BBL09, Cartwright’s explosiveness has been a mainstay of Stars’ middle order and he is also a useful seam bowler. He made 18 off 17 balls batting at No.5 in Stars’ six-wicket defeat to Scorchers.Stars’ next game is against defending champions Brisbane Heat on Wednesday at the MCG.”He’s very important to our team. He’s the heartbeat of our team, but not only for us, with Western Australia,” Stoinis said. “He’s a very well respected guy. You don’t expect those things to happen.”It definitely put a dampener on the mood of the night. We ran there pretty quick just to see him. But there’s nothing you can really do… just hope he’s alright.”Cartwright, who played two Tests for Australia in 2017, has been in strong form to start the domestic season. He is the second leading scorer in the Sheffield Shield with 530 runs at an average of 53 and he has taken four wickets at 35.25.During a Shield match against Tasmania in October at the WACA, Cartwright retired at tea on day two to be at the birth of his second child.”Genuine concern for Hilton, certainly hope that he’s okay,” Scorchers/Western Australia coach Adam Voges said. “He’s a West Australian and much loved. We wish him the best and certainly hope that it’s positive news.”

The iconic ex-No.7 is currently without a job after he left the head coach position at Castilla at the end of the 2024-25 season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Raul began working as a coach in Madrid's La Fabrica academy before taking on as the B team's manager in 2019. He spent six seasons with Castilla and came agonisingly close to firing the reserves to a promotion to the second division in the 2022-23 season, losing to Eldense in the play-offs. During his spell as Castilla boss, he also took over the reins of the U-19 team in the UEFA Youth League knockouts in 2020 and led them to the title. Despite proving his managerial mettle time and again, he never came close to earning promotion and becoming the first-team head coach.

  • WHAT RAUL SAID

Speaking about his future on the podcast, Raul said: "The plan will come on its own. You have to be patient and calm. I have been a coach at Real Madrid Castilla for six years, and I am sure that in the short term some opportunity, some challenge will come that excites me, because I believe that to do things you have to be motivated and you have to feel it."

He also kept doors open to a return to the Chamartin: "I've been at the club where I wanted to be and which is my home, and I know I'll come back again when the time is right, at another time."

Madrid's all-time appearance maker was subject to immense speculation during his time at Castilla, receiving interest from across Europe. He was eyed by Schalke, where he played after leaving Los Blancos as a player. Leeds, too, were reported to have an interest in the Spaniard's services. Most recently, following the sacking of Erik ten Hag, Raul was linked with the Bayer Leverkusen role. However, the ex-Spain international is currently on a sabbatical, although his words indicate that he is ready to take on his next "challenge" if the right opportunity comes his way.

No way back for Ademola Lookman? Atalanta return ruled out as coach Ivan Juric wants to see 'a different level of humanity' after star's transfer dramatics

Ademola Lookman has been warned he faces a tough road back into the Atalanta first-team after he was left out of the squad again on Sunday. The Nigerian has been at odds with the club after his dramatic attempts to force a move to Inter in this summer transfer window. Manager Ivan Juric called it a tense situation as he asked for more "humility" and wants his players to have a "sense of belonging."

Lookman absent again as Atalanta thrash Lecce

The attacker was again left out of the squad altogether as Atalanta claimed their first Serie A win of the season by beating Lecce 4-1 in Bergamo. The game came two days after Lookman met with club president Antonio Percassi, CEO Luca Percassi and sporting director Tony D'Amico to discuss his situation at the club following his attempts to force a summer transfer, but it remains unclear if he will be welcomed back into the team.

AdvertisementGettyJuric explains why Lookman was left out against Lecce

It had been reported that Lookman may make it to the squad for Sunday's match, but Juric refused to relent and explained his decision after the game.

"Lookman won't be called up; it's a bad, unpleasant situation," he told reporters. "We need spirit, fighting spirit, humility, hard work, and a sense of belonging. Our players need to be like this; I want a different level of humanity."

Lookman included in Champions League squad

Lookman tried to force his way out of the club as Serie A rivals Inter made an offer. After Atalanta refused, he handed in a transfer request and publicly criticised the club, accusing them of breaking a promise. Atalanta hit back with the claim that the agreement to sell him for a certain price only applied to non-Italian teams and the player remained on strike for some time. The 27-year-old has since been training alone, but has been included in the Champions League squad, suggesting he could still play a role under Juric.
