Ehantharajah: Challenges galore for Ashley Giles

Match FactsJanuary 17, 2014, Brisbane
Start time 1.20pm (0320GMT)Mitchell Johnson is back for the Brisbane ODI, but there will be less facial hair this time•Getty Images

The Big PictureA few late wickets made the final result appear a little more respectable, but the first ODI at the MCG was only one thing: another thrashing for England. In the intervening days they have at least managed a victory – their first since mid-November – but apart from avoiding further embarrassment (and the resilience of the middle order) it would be foolish to read too much into the win over the Prime Minister’s XI.Five-match series at least give a team the chance to fight back, but England can’t afford to leave it any longer to start giving Australia a run for their money. A chase of 270 in Melbourne was a decent ask but the home side made it look like a cakewalk. Aaron Finch and David Warner, albeit given a life each, cantered along at a merry rate against a thin-looking England attack and Stuart Broad will again be missing for this match. The contrast between how Australia begin their innings and how England, generally, go about their efforts at the crease in the first 10 to 20 overs is stark. Alastair Cook and Ashley Giles appear steadfast in their belief that there is still room for the building-blocks of a total to be steadily put in place over the first half of the innings, arguing, with some evidence, that the middle order is where the strength lies. Still, with a World Cup staged partly here in little over a year’s time they are going to have to force themselves out of their comfort zone sooner or later.Australia just want to keep the bandwagon rolling. Cricket is not quite dominating the back pages like it was a few weeks ago (now it’s the turn of the tennis) but the team are determined to keep England down. Glenn Maxwell has spoken of wiping them out in all formats while Mitchell Johnson and George Bailey scoffed at suggestions of any sympathy. It won’t be getting any easier for them.Form guide(Completed matches, most recent first)

EnglandLLWLWWatch out forChris Jordan has made as many headlines for the friendship with Rhianna as his exploits on the field, but on a desperate tour for England his 10 overs in Melbourne were a rare bright spot. On another day he would have bagged three or four wickets. Swing, at a lively pace, is an enticing combination and in Brisbane, with the greater humidity and what should be a pitch with more bounce, he could prove a handful.Mitchell Johnson is back. But the moustache has gone. Will the powers remain? After a post-Ashes break to chill out after his urn-winning exploits it’s time to renew acquaintances with the English batsmen on the ground where it all began at the end of November. Some are new to the one-day squad, but others such as Cook, Bell and possibly Carberry will have vivid memories of what unfolded on that second day. This time Johnson only has 10 overs, although that’s still enough for some significant damage.Team newsShane Watson has now been given the next three matches off which means Shaun Marsh should get a chance at No. 3. Johnson’s return is likely to be at the expense of Nathan Coulter-Nile although the absence of Watson may make the selectors consider if they need another pace option.Australia (possible) 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 George Bailey, 6 Glenn Maxwell, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 James Faulkner, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 11 Clint McKayEngland may freshen up their top order with the likeliest change being Michael Carberry, who made 47 against the PM’s XI, replacing the struggling Joe Root. The absence of Root, though, would remove an extra bowling option.England (possible) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Michael Carberry, 4 Gary Ballance, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Jos Buttler (wk), 8 Ben Stokes, 9 Tim Bresnan, 10 Chris Jordan, 11 Boyd RankinPitch and conditionsExpect good pace and carry and some swing – so pretty much as normal for the Gabba. The forecast is set fair without a significant chance of the game being disrupted by large hailstone as it was during the Test.Stats and trivia The last two one-day internationals on this ground (both involving Australia and Sri Lanka) could barely have been more contrasting: in 2012 Australia made 321 for 6 and won, although Sri Lanka reached 306, then in 2013 Australia were shattered for 74 although the visitors lost six in reaching the target. Before that loss against Sri Lanka, Australia had won six consecutive ODIs at the Gabba Since his second-innings half-century in the Boxing Day Test, Alastair Cook has made 7, 7, 4 and 1Quotes”I feel good. I’ve spent a bit of time in the middle, got a decent score in the first game then to get another fifty was good. I’ve got a bit of confidence.”

India-born Sodhi ready for spin examination

India born Ish Sodhi is looking forward to the challenge of bowling against India, who are fine players of spin

Abhishek Purohit in Auckland04-Feb-2014

Ish Sodhi grew up idolizing Anil Kumble and has recently spent some time talking legspin with Shane Warne•Getty Images

Ish Sodhi was born in India and spent his childhood years in the country before migrating with his parents to New Zealand. He could be playing his first match against the Indians at Eden Park in two days’ time, and his parents could be watching from the stands. While he feels that will be a special moment, he makes it clear it means a lot to be able to represent New Zealand. Sodhi is only 21, and says it will be his hardest challenge so far to bowl to the Indians, who are such fine players of spin.”First and foremost the main thing is I might get a chance to play for my country and that is the biggest thing for me,” Sodhi said. “And any chance to play India, obviously I was born there (Ludhiana) and it is special being able to play against India because I have a massive Indian heritage. But I am playing against the best players in the world. That is the big thing to come out of it. The players are also very good players of spin. In general Indian batsmen do come hard at spin. It is quite exciting. Emotion is always going to be there.”It is a very big challenge. Obviously you want to be playing against the best in the world and you want to be challenged, and that is the way you find yourself as a cricketer and a person. Also as a person you put yourself in tough situations. Playing at Eden Park is also special to me.”Sodhi grew up idolizing Anil Kumble and has recently spent some time talking legspin with Shane Warne. He said the biggest takeaway from the meeting was Warne’s ability to focus. “As a child you always like to copy bowlers, you try to be Shane Warne, you try to be Anil Kumble. He was my hero growing up. But it is different because you get to a point where you sort of tell yourself ‘I can’t be like Anil Kumble, I can’t be Shane Warne because I’m not built the same way, my mind doesn’t work the same way’. So I have to take into account the bigger things they do and sort of make them the best I can make them with the ability that I have.”The biggest thing for me was that he (Warne) was so balanced about the approach to the game. Whether that be, inside the cricket field or outside the cricket field. He was never really clouding his mind with too many thoughts. But when he did bowl everything he took into account how he was going to bowl that day. That was massive to me, kind of relaxed. You are not the only person under pressure.”As a young bowler, advice comes from all corners, and Sodhi said one had to learn how to filter out the useful bits, although he would keep talking to people who were close to him. “A lot of people do offer you advice, and the way you use that advice is up to you really. Some stuff is really good and some is not helpful. But being young you sort of listen and depending on how tough you are you sort of list things you should and shouldn’t do. That is how I am learning as I grow. As I say I am still young and I have quite a lot to learn before I can feel like a whole package.”I have spoken to a few people like Daniel Vettori, we have spoken a few times about it but not in too much detail. In the next two days I will have a few conversations. Otherwise a lot of people in this team have played a lot of cricket and I will be able to pick their brains.”Sodhi goes into the Tests on the back of a five-wicket haul for Northern Districts against Canterbury. While he said his rhythm was good, he admitted he would have to perform a defensive role as well, especially in the first innings. “(With) legspin you see yourself as an attacking weapon. But I think there are going to be times in the Test series there will be the holding job and I might have to do that. It will be the pace bowlers in the first innings and if it does spin later in the second innings then I might have to (attack). It is about adjusting between those two modes.”

Never mind the lack of hype

India v Pakistan match has lacked anticipation this time but it will be all right by the time MS Dhoni and Mohammad Hafeez walk out for the toss at 7pm on Friday

Cullinan: Pakistan’s spinners key

Match factsMarch 21, 2014
Start time 1930 local (1330 GMT)Big pictureThere was a time when India-Pakistan matches, no matter where they were being played, no matter what tournament they were part of, brought two entire countries to a halt for days. All the people could talk of days, weeks, months in advance was “the match”. Sachin Tendulkar didn’t sleep properly for 12 nights leading into India’s World Cup match against Pakistan in 2003. He said he was made to live that match a year in advance. Pakistan players were believed to find extra powers when they played India. All sorts of myth surrounded the match. That India couldn’t beat Pakistan on a Friday was a fact nobody contested. This match hasn’t that kind of anticipation. And it’s not as if there has been a glut of India-Pakistan matches to make this less significant. It is just that times are changing. Even warm-up matches are live on television. It all means less time for the mind to build up to the big one. It doesn’t help that for the first time in the history of tournaments of five or more teams that India and Pakistan are playing the first match of the main draw. It is like asking Bruce Springsteen to be the opening act on a rock concert. A bit like shahi paneer or butter chicken at the start of the buffet. It can’t be such a bad thing, though, that there isn’t much hype attached to this match. As it is there will be nerves and edginess at the start of a big tournament; it can do without unwanted, at times uncricketing pressures. And if the match is good enough – like another supposed-to-be-nondescript one 19 days ago was – it will capture the people’s imagination. The modern, almost classical by now, differences between India and Pakistan will be on show. India stable, at times to the point of stubbornness but still stable. Pakistan happy to chop and change, their captain’s neck always under the block. India with their batsmen. Pakistan with their bowlers. India with their love of the chase. Pakistan defence. With a warm feeling, nonetheless, of two of their best chases of recent times – the Test against Sri Lanka in Sharjah, the Asia Cup ODI against India in Dhaka – and the dew almost certain to play a role in this evening game. Don’t worry about the absence of hype; this match will be all right by the time MS Dhoni and Mohammad Hafeez walk out for the toss at 7pm on Friday. And, by the way, many of the players on these teams are young enough to not even know of the Ghost Of The Friday.Form guide (most recent first)India WWLLW
Pakistan LWWWLWatch out forR Ashwin v Saeed Ajmal. On slow and low pitches much like both spinners’ home conditions, these offspinners with deliveries that go away in their repertoire will be a contest to savour. Ajmal, in particular, has given India much grief. Even Tendulkar couldn’t pick his doosra. The Indians now are facing unorthodox net bowlers to simulate Ajmal. In two Twenty20 matches against Pakistan, Ashwin has conceded only 44 runs for three wickets. So there is evidence to suggest both raise their game against each other, a traditional barometer of the quality of a cricketer from India or Pakistan.Who doesn’t like some last-over six hitting?•AFP

MS Dhoni v Shahid Afridi. India-Pakistan matches sometimes come down to which of the leaders led a calmer team; others to which leader roused more emotion. It is just the timing and the feel. Pakistan have traditionally enjoyed the emotion in order to bring the best out of them, India have tried to play it down because they believe it allows them to handle games better. India prefer the Dhoni-like match-winning six in the last over, Pakistan the Afridi version.Team newsIndia haven’t given any indication that they will use Ajinkya Rahane, who opens in the IPL, at the top of the innings. In the warm-ups, Rohit Sharma, who bats in the middle order in the IPL, and Shikhar Dhawan have opened. India haven’t actually ruled out Rahane as an opener, but India are not known to be flexible with their plans. If Rahane doesn’t open, his participation in the match depends on how many bowlers India play. If they can rely on Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma to be the fifth bowler, there could be space for Rahane. Or even Stuart Binny if India want a better batsman than a specialist bowler and still some extra assurance with the ball. Given the dew, a third spinner might be ruled out.India (possible): 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 7 Ajinkya Rahane/Stuart Binny/Amit Mishra/Varun Aaron/Mohit Sharma, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Mohammed Shami.Kamran Akmal has made a strong case for himself as opener with a fifty against New Zealand in the warm-up game. If he does come in, he replaces Ahmed Shehzad and relieves brother Umar of wicketkeeping duties. Shoaib Malik is a good chance, too, for his India-slaying capabilities if nothing else.Pakistan (possible): 1 Kamran Akmal (wk), 2 Sharjeel Khan, 3 Mohammad Hafeez (capt.), 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Sohaib Maqsood, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Bilawal Bhatti, 9 Sohail Tanvir, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Saeed Ajmal.Pitch and conditions Dew remains a big concern, but this being a Twenty20 starting at 7.30pm the side batting first will be disadvantaged a little less than otherwise. Expect turn too.Stats and trivia Pakistan have never beaten India in a World Cup match MS Dhoni has never scored an international Twenty20 fiftyQuotes “I feel it has mellowed down to some extent, whatever the reason maybe, you do not see many altercations on the field. But still you see very competitive cricket, which I feel is very important.”
“History does not really bother us. Irrespective of whether it is good or bad, it is history. All days are not great days. You should be ready for the next day.”

Butt asks PCB to work on his rehab too

Salman Butt, the banned former Pakistan captain, is hopeful PCB chairman Najam Sethi will “do for other players” what he is doing for Mohammad Amir, who is also serving a ban for spot-fixing

Butt: ‘It’s good that the chairman is making efforts to revive the international career of Mohammad Amir, but he should also do it for others’•Getty Images

Salman Butt, the banned former Pakistan captain, is hopeful PCB chairman Najam Sethi will “do for other players” what he is doing for Mohammad Amir, who is also serving a ban for spot-fixing.Sethi had stated on several occasions previously that he is looking into getting the terms of Amir’s five-year ban reduced by the ICC, so that he can revive his international career at the earliest. The ICC is set to implement an amended anti-corruption code from June, which might facilitate a quicker return to cricket for players serving long-term bans.”I wish what he [Sethi] is doing for Amir, he does for other players too,” Butt said on Saturday. “Pakistan needs Amir, and the other players.”In September last year, the PCB had sought advice from the Queen’s Counsel in England, with regards to getting Amir’s ban reduced. While under the old corruption code there is no provision for the ICC to reduce a ban, it is understood that the PCB was then looking to ensure Amir could at least use its training facilities ahead of schedule so he can be ready to make a comeback as soon his ban ends.Butt said he had met the PCB several times to see what it could do for him in terms of rehabilitation, but was yet to receive any positive response. “I have been to the cricket board at least 10-15 times, and have met Colonel Azam of anti-corruption, and have asked him to start my rehabilitation lectures. It has to be organised by the PCB.”I am available 24-7. I come to the ground every day, and as long as I am fit I am ready to play. Whatever things ICC judges have told me about rehabilitation, it’s completed from my end. Whatever now PCB says I am ready.”Butt said he just wanted to be treated the same way as Amir. “It’s good that the chairman is making efforts to revive the international career of Mohammad Amir, but he should also do it for others. When the ban is up, everyone should get an equal opportunity. I am not demanding anything extra.”In February 2011, Amir, 21, was one of the three banned by the ICC, along with Butt (29) and Mohammad Asif (31), after being found guilty of spot-fixing during Pakistan’s Lord’s Test against England in August 2010. Amir was the only one to plead guilty to the charges in the trial that followed at London’s Southwark Crown Court.
