After Robin Uthappa’s 69 took the visitors to 182, they had kept the Royal Challengers, and Gayle, in check for 12 overs. Gayle and Virat Kohli, game-changers both, had crawled along in a partnership of 30 in 35 deliveries. The asking-rate had ballooned to over 13, with 111 needed from 50. Nehra delivered a low full toss and a length ball next. De Villiers smoked one straight down the ground for six; the next one was scooped nervelessly for another six over fine leg. With three needed off the last ball, Tiwary swung a length ball over the long-on boundary even as the rain came pouring down. Marlon Samuels, who had gone for under three an over, had two overs left.Somehow, the Royal Challengers’ batsmen had delivered after their bowlers had once again conceded a substantial score. Uthappa did most of the scoring with a power-packed half-century at the top of the order with Jesse Ryder and Samuels chipping in with smaller contributions.The opening partnership between Uthappa and Ryder was worth 63 in seven overs. By then, Uthappa was in complete control. He timed three consecutive reverse-sweeps off Dilshan, with two of them beating short third man. The Warriors went at the same rate of around nine an over after Uthappa’s dismissal with Samuels smashing the spinners for a couple of sixes. Ali de Winter has said he will encourage Australia’s fast bowlers to continue following the Craig McDermott method when he takes over as stand-in bowling coach for the tour of England. The Australians fly out on Thursday and for the first time in more than a year, the bowling group will not have McDermott to advise them after his decision to step down last month.The Tasmania assistant coach de Winter, who narrowly missed out on the job last year when McDermott was appointed, has been asked to fill in for this trip. It will serve as a valuable audition for de Winter, who has applied to become McDermott’s full-time replacement, and he said he would be doing his best to keep the bowlers heading in the same direction they were steered by McDermott.”There’s no rocket science to what we do,” de Winter told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s about keeping things as simple as possible, mechanically as well as tactically. At that level it’s purely about executing the plans that we put in place. That’s what it boils down to. In the past at Test level they sometimes haven’t been able to maintain their plan for long enough periods of time, particularly against the better sides like England and South Africa.”I share similar views to Craig, certainly about attacking the top of off stump a lot more in Test cricket. One-day cricket will be a little different, but keeping it simple as Craig has in the past 12 months has paid dividends and I think we’d be mad to move too far away from that sort of philosophy.”Despite the short nature of the trip, which includes five ODIs against England and one against Ireland, there will be challenges for de Winter. England does not hold happy memories for Johnson, and de Winter knows it will be up to him to ensure that Johnson is ready to take to the field again whenever the selectors choose him.”I think it’s largely [confidence] with him,” de Winter said. “He’s got plenty of experience and he knows how to compete. I’ll be talking to him and finding out the work he’s done with Dennis Lillee, to make sure we stay on the same page. If that stuff has been working for him it’s a matter of picking up on what’s been done and not getting our wires crossed.”I think we’d be wise to keep it as simple as we can for Mitch. It’s about building confidence and making sure that when he gets his next opportunity, whenever that is, he’s got confidence and he knows he can trust his own game. That looked like something he may have lost when he was going through his rough patch.”Johnson won’t be the only one who must keep his mind on the job. de Winter knows that plenty of eyes will be on him as the tour unfolds, analysing the way he interacts with the bowlers, assessing his results and determining whether he would be a good fit for a full-time role within the squad.McDermott had 291 Test wickets to point to; de Winter must impress in other ways. And while he is keen to prove his worth, he is also aware that a clouded mind is as dangerous to coaches as it is to bowlers and batsmen.”I’ve thrown my hat into the ring,” he said. “I’ve expressed my interest and I believe I’m through to the next stage. It sounds like they will start doing formal interviews in the third week of July. I have no idea what the rest of the field is like apart from Waqar Younis, who people are talking about.”I’m looking at the trip at the moment as purely an opportunity to professionally develop rather than feel the pressure of being on trial. That’s the way I’m going about it. I’ve had a chat with Mickey Arthur about a few things, so I have a few things to work on prior to the tour. I’m just trying not to put too much pressure on myself.”

Thami Tsolekile, the Lions wicketkeeper, will replace Mark Boucher in South Africa’s squad for the Test series in England. Tsolekile, however, is unlikely to play the first Test from July 19, with South Africa coach Gary Kirsten saying AB de Villiers will keep wicket at The Oval.”Thami has done very well [for] both the Lions and South Africa A for a couple of seasons, culminating in his South African record [of] eight catches in an innings this past week,” Andrew Hudson, Cricket South Africa’s convener of selectors, said. “With AB de Villiers also able to fill the role of wicketkeeper in the Test series it gives the tour selectors options in this important position.”Tsolekile’s inclusion was necessary because of Boucher’s retirement from cricket, following a severe eye injury sustained during the tour match against Somerset in Taunton. Boucher was struck by a bail and had to undergo surgery for a lacerated eyeball.Tsolekile, 31, played three Tests for South Africa in 2004, when Boucher was left out of the team. He scored only 47 runs in five innings and was dropped when Boucher made a comeback. Tsolekile has vast domestic experience, having played 132 first-class matches over a 13-year career that began in 1999. He has been second in line to the national team for years but did not get an opportunity because of Boucher’s permanence in South Africa’s plans.Tsolekile was given a central contract in February, the first time CSA had contracted a second wicketkeeper in 13 years since contracts were first awarded in 1998.During a recent game between South Africa A and Sri Lanka A in Durban, Tsolekile took eight catches in the first innings, a South African record.

Enquanto o time profissional vive a ressaca pós-eliminação na Copa Sul-Americana e a expectativa de se afastar mais ainda da zona de rebaixamento, a base do Botafogo se movimenta. Diferentes categorias têm diferentes desempenhos, mas o momento é de esperança. Só no mês passado, oito atletas foram apresentados visando à equipe sub-20. Mas é no time sub-15 que estão duas as maiores promessas atuais: Matheus Nascimento e Jhonnatha.

Os dois atacantes frequentemente utilizados na categoria, apesar de terem ainda 14 anos. Mas já foram convocados, este ano, para as três oportunidades possíveis para a Seleção Brasileira. Todavia, o gerente geral da base alvinegra, Tiano Gomes, prega paciência.

– Ter dois jogadores na Seleção sub-15 é uma alegria muito grande, mas sabemos que temos que ter os devidos cuidados para que eles permaneçam se desenvolvendo.Eles têm 14 anos, mas jogam no sub-15. Resolvemos levá-los à categoria acima e eles tiveram uma adaptação rápida. Temos que ter o cuidado com a conversa e com trabalho interdisciplinar – explicou o dirigente ao LANCE!.

Os números da dupla no ano (pelo Botafogo):
– 12 gols e 9 assistências para Jhonnatha;
– 12 gols e 5 Assistências para Matheus.

Os oito mais recentemente contratados para a base alvinegra se destacaram no estado do Rio e até fora, e chegaram ao Glorioso com o objetivo de reforçar, especialmente, a categoria sub-20. Vale lembrar que o Glorioso foi campeão brasileiro de juniores em 2016, com uma geração de atletas que hoje está no time profissional: Marcinho, Bochecha e Matheus Fernandes são alguns.

Para as próximas competições o técnico de juniores, Anthoni Santoro, terá: o goleiro João Henrique, o lateral-direito Nicholas e o volante Pedro Paulo (os três têm 19 anos), os meias Israel Duarte e Vinicius Foguinho (ambos de 18 anos) e o atacante Pedro Lucas também de 18 anos. O volante Rafael e o atacante Luis Henrique também, e ambos ainda têm 17 anos.

– Eles são para reforçar. Tínhamos o Barroca (Eduardo, que foi para o Corinthians) e, com a mudança de treinador e alguns jogadores que saíram, por não vermos expectativa de projeção, trouxemos estes novos atletas – completou Tiano Gomes.
