Crystal Palace defender Nathan Ferguson has picked up a fresh injury ahead of tonight’s meeting with Norwich City, Matt Woosnam reports.

The Lowdown: Ferguson’s troubles

Ferguson finally made his Premier League debut for the Eagles on Boxing Day against Tottenham after joining the club back in July 2020.

The 21-year-old had missed 49 games for Palace before his first appearance due to hamstring and Achilles issues.

He has since featured on the bench against Norwich, Brighton and Liverpool but was absent from the matchday squad against Hartlepool in the FA Cup over the weekend.

The Latest: Woosnam’s post

The Athletic’s Woosnam took to Twitter on Tuesday evening to relay comments from Patrick Vieira regarding Ferguson, who Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson called a ‘very good’ player.

He confirmed that the right-back has an injury and will need to wait a few days to see the severity of the fresh issue.

The Verdict: Not good

Vieira will also be without Cheikhou Kouyate at Carrow Road this evening and the Palace boss has missed James McArthur and James Tomkins due to injury, with the former out since November and the latter missing three games. [football.london]

So, with Palace having a number of injury issues to deal with alongside Ferguson’s long-term absence, everyone at the club will be hoping that Ferguson’s latest injury isn’t a serious one and that he can make a swift return to action.

Time is on Ferguson’s side at the age of 21, and hopefully, the versatile defender isn’t sidelined for long and can enjoy an injury-free rest of the season ahead of a possible breakthrough campaign in 2022/23.

يرى خالد الغندور نجم الزمالك السابق، أن المحترف البرازيلي في صفوف الأهلي برونو سافيو لاعب “عادي”، مُشيرًا إلى أنه لا يمتلك شخصية في الملعب.

وانتقل برونو سافيو إلى الأهلي قادمًا من نادي بوليفار البوليفي مطلع الموسم الجاري، وسجل أول أهدافه مع المارد الأحمر في مرمى الزمالك خلال لقاء كأس السوبر الذي أقيم في الإمارات.

وقال الغندور في تصريحات تلفزيونية عبر قناة “أون تايم سبورتس”: “هل نُقيم لاعب لأنه أحرز هدفًا، أم نقيمه لشخصيته، أنا رأيي أن برونو سافيو لاعب عادي”.

After getting through a thrilling 3-3 draw in their previous Premier League outing at home against Leeds United in midweek, Aston Villa face another challenge against a relegation-threatened team today, this time against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

In terms of which players Villa manager Steven Gerrard could select in his starting XI to take on the Magpies, one man who didn’t start against Leeds but we feel should be in the team from the beginning on this occasion is Carney Chukwuemeka.

Since joining Villa’s youth ranks back in 2016 from Northampton Town’s youth side, the midfielder has gone on to make 65 appearances for the Midlands club across their under-18, under-23 and senior sides across all competitions, racking up 13 goals and 14 assists along the way and highlighting his attacking and creative talents.

Before Gerrard was appointed Villa manager in November, the 18-year-old had only made one appearance for the club in the Premier League, playing 63 minutes as a starter against Brentford back in August.

Since the 41-year-old arrived in the Midlands, the teenager has made seven appearances in the league, all coming off the substitutes’ bench.

With Trezeguet loaned out to Istanbul Basaksehir and Bertrand Traore injured, as well as potentially having Emi Buendia unavailable, this could be a great opportunity for Chukwuemeka to show Gerrard and the Villa fans what he can do.

Taking this into account, the youngster – who is currently picking up £2.4k-per-week according to Salary Sport – may not have a better chance to get his first league start under the current Villa boss.

Labelled an “outstanding” player by former Villa maestro Paul Merson and one could go on to be an “absolute star”, Chukwuemeka could use this opportunity (if he does start) to really make a claim to be a regular in the starting XI for the Villans.

With Newcastle having conceded 44 goals in 22 league games this season, Gerrard could be tempted into starting the 18-year-old to see if he can cause problems for the Tyneside club’s leaky defence and help his side secure a win after dropping two points against Leeds.

Everton centre-back Yerry Mina’s latest injury ‘could be season-ending’, Ben Dinnery has told Football Insider. 

The lowdown

The Colombian sustained a quad injury in the first half of the Toffees’ Premier League defeat against Newcastle United earlier this month.

According to Frank Lampard, he faces ‘between eight and 10 weeks’ on the sidelines. If that timeline proves accurate, the 27-year-old would return to training between the middle and end of April.

Everton are also without another centre-back in the form of Ben Godfrey, who is expected to be missing for at least another three weeks.

Injury expert Dinnery has said that Mina is a key figure at Everton, which makes his ‘ongoing muscular problems’ all the more frustrating, and he thinks the Toffees may ultimately decide that it isn’t worth risking the defender before the end of the campaign.

Dinnery told Football Insider: “He is pivotal to that Everton team. If you look at their win ratios when he is and isn’t in that team, it’s night and day.

“Trying to keep him fit has been the difficult thing in recent seasons. There are a lot of ongoing muscular problems that have hampered him. That 10-week turnaround, it could even be May if we get to a worst-case scenario.

“Then you start to question if it is even worth bringing him back for the end of the season. Possibly, that could be season-ending. There are no guarantees.”

The verdict

Dinnery has a point about the win ratio, as well as the defender’s chequered injury record.

Mina has started eight Premier League games this season, helping Everton to collect 11 points (a rate of 1.375 per game). Strikingly, they have amassed the same number of points from the 16 games that he hasn’t started (0.69 ppg).

It’s tempting to wonder how much better the Toffees’ situation would be if he had been fit for the entire campaign, but it wouldn’t have been wise for Everton to count on that given the Colombian’s history.

Since he made his Everton debut in October 2018, the £120,000-per-week defender has had to deal with 10 separate injuries, ruling him out of 35 matches (and counting), so maybe it is best for Lampard to give Mina every bit of time he needs to get back up to full fitness instead of rushing him back prematurely.
