Newcastle move for Man City ace Palmer

A report has now revealed that Newcastle United attempted to sign Cole Palmer on loan ahead of the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Big future

Coming through the ranks at Manchester City, there is no doubt that Palmer has a big future ahead of him.

He has scored goals for fun at youth level, and has since earned call-ups to the senior team, despite being just 19 years of age.

He is a player that Pep Guardiola is especially fond of, having dubbed him ‘exceptional’ and a ‘talent’ with ‘special quality’ when he gets in front of the net (talkSPORT).

However, with the array of talent that City have at their disposal, a loan move away could suit Palmer as he aims to develop quicker by playing more regular football.

The Latest: Attempt rejected

The Athletic have now revealed that the Sky Blues have ‘knocked back’ an attempt from the St. James’ Park faithful to take Palmer on loan for the rest of the season.

Representatives of the North East club ‘suggested’ the idea of a loan deal, but were told that the striker is in Guardiola’s plans for the next few months.

The Verdict: Shame

It is certainly a shame that the Tyneside outfit now look set to miss out on bringing Palmer in, given the circumstances that they currently find themselves in.

A loan move would have suited them, as if the worst case scenario happened and they were to find themselves relegated from the Premier League down to the Championship at the end of the term, then Palmer could have just been sent back to the Etihad Stadium.

Callum Wilson is by far their top scorer this campaign with six goals, and has not really been helped by his fellow strikers.

Nonetheless, Palmer has shown that he knows where the back of the net is, and could have aided Wilson in that sense to get as many goals as needed to stay up.

West Brom: Fans react to Valerien Ismael comments

A number of West Brom fans have been reacting to Valerien Ismael’s comments following the 1-0 defeat to Derby County on Monday.

The Baggies missed the chance to go second with a poor display against Wayne Rooney’s side, with Colin Kazim-Richards scoring the winner shortly after coming on.

He netted after a mix up between Cedric Kipre and Sam Johnstone, with Albion missing a cutting edge in front of goal against The Rams throughout the 90 minutes.

The Baggies registered just five attempts on target from their 19 shots, while they created just one ‘big chance’ in the entire match, per Sofascore.

Ismael said he was ‘really upset’ with his side’s performance, hitting out at his squad’s mentality and lack of quality. The 46-year-old labelled the goal they conceded as ‘embarrassing’ and told his players to take responsibility for their own displays.

The defeat to Derby was West Brom’s final game of 2021, with Ismael hoping he can get the Baggies back to winning ways against Cardiff City on Sunday.

Baggies fans react

Ismael’s strong words had these Baggies supporters fuming, with one labelling the club’s official Twitter post as ‘laughable’.

ScorecardQasim Sheikh and Richie Berrington cemented Scotland’s dominant position on the second day at Nairobi with career-best batting performances to help their side to 306 after Kenya were routed for 91 yesterday. Kenya went to stumps still 185 runs in arrears after Seren Waters’ second failure of the match, and face a mountainous task to salvage anything from this position.Berrington and Sheikh added a further 87 to their partnership this morning, with Sheikh reaching his third first-class hundred before he was caught on the crease by Steve Tikolo. The Kenyan bowlers stuck to their task admirably thereafter, taking wickets at regular intervals as they fought to keep their side in the game.Majid Haq was trapped lbw by offspinner Jimmy Kamande, who added to his frugal bowling by running Simon Smith out in the next over before he had faced a ball. Gordon Drummond edged Nehemiah Odhiambo through to Maurice Ouma behind the stumps shortly afterwards to leave Scotland at 233 for 7, but Berrington and Ross Lyons firmly ensconced themselves at the crease to frustrate the Kenyans.Berrington went to his maiden first-class fifty, to go with his sterling effort with the ball in Kenya’s first innings, before he became Kamande’s second victim of the innings. Lyons was finally prised out for a 93-ball 23 by Elijah Otieno, who bowled Dewald Nel for 5 to end the innings in his next over.In reply, Nel removed Waters for 12 to put Kenya in early strife at 24 for 1, but Rakep Patel and nightwatchman Hiren Varaiya held firm till the close. They, and the remainder of the batsmen, will have to play out of their skins tomorrow if Kenya are to save this match.

India win thriller despite heroic Amla

Harbhajan Singh answered India’s call with a mix of aggressive and patient, smart and persistent spin bowling, taking them to a series-equalling and innings win over South Africa

They couldn’t out Hashim Amla at all. So India, down to three bowlers and led by an exceptional Harbhajan Singh, found a way around him, leaving him stranded with nine mandatory balls to go and sealing a heart-stopping, series-levelling win that also meant they retained the top spot in the ICC rankings. As was fitting, it was Harbhajan who brought about the final wicket with a slider to the left-hand batsman Morne Morkel, who had put together a 76-minute last-wicket stand with Amla. The final few steps didn’t come easy for India: the last three wickets batted out 53.3 overs to set up a beautiful Test-match finish. For eight hours and 19 minutes in this innings, which took to 23 hours and 22 minutes the total time he’s spent at the wicket for the series, Amla saw everything: offbreaks, topspinners, unintended doosras, big legbreaks, googlies, bouncers, full ones, a blow to the elbow, the bowlers’ joy, their frustration, and Harbhajan’s eruption on taking the last wicket. At every stage – when he reached fifty or his hundred, when he was hurt, when he was concentrating, when he was defending, during those final few overs of counting each delivery down, and when he was walking back after one of the biggest disappointments he has experienced on a cricket field – the calm expression on his face was unchanged.Amla batted like the Monk who didn’t need to sell a Ferrari, and it took a special bowling effort to deny his side the series win. Harbhajan answered India’s call with spin bowling aggressive and patient, smart and persistent, and came up with that wicket-taking delivery when it had deserted the other bowlers. If Amla never looked like getting out, Harbhajan never looked like letting anyone settle. India had 98 overs to get seven wickets but 52.2 of them were a write-off: they were bowled to Amla, and this man was going to get out. Not today. They did well, though, to create enough pressure in the remaining overs – despite two dropped catches – to finish off the match with 16 minutes remaining in the day’s play.India woke up to a bright and sunny day, but were thwarted in the first session by Amla and Ashwell Prince. For about two hours, Amla kept killing their hopes, Prince kept raising them only to not edge to hand. Finally, just when the draw started to become the favoured result, Harbhajan came back for his second spell of the day, from his favoured High Court End.In the first spell, he had tried to get Prince lbw in a fashion similar to the one in the first innings, and failed. In his second he went over the stumps and made it difficult for Prince to judge which deliveries to leave. The leg line troubled Prince, and finally he jabbed at one outside off and lobbed it to mid-off.Amit Mishra once again produced the special delivery out of nowhere, this time a googly to take out AB de Villiers in the penultimate over before the lunch break, the third time he had taken a wicket just before a break in the innings. de Villiers’ was the big wicket because he was the one batsman capable of using his feet and hitting spinners off their length.India couldn’t dismiss Hashim Amla all day, but got all his partners instead•AFP

In the second spell, six overs each either side of lunch, Harbhajan looked menacing with almost every delivery. After lunch, Harbhajan went on to suggest JP Duminy might become his new Ponting. Offbreak, offbreak, slider. Duminy caught in front again. Dale Steyn didn’t have a clue about deliveries spinning down the leg side, and kept getting beaten. Harbhajan smartly moved round the stumps, and trapped him too.Thereafter Amla found an able partner in Parnell, who looked much more assured than Steyn, and helped by a dropped catch by Suresh Raina at a wide fourth slip, played out 24.2 overs. Amla manipulated the strike well: out of eight overs that Harbhajan bowled during that stand, Parnell got away by facing only 12 balls from the best bowler around.A soft shot befitting a No. 9 arrived duly, after which Amla shielded Paul Harris for a while. From facing four balls of each over, he gradually let Harris face three each, and by the time Harris generated enough confidence in Amla, a soft shot befitting a No. 10 came by. Ishant got both the wickets, but 8.3 more overs had been negated. That started the most exciting period of the match. Morkel batted solidly along with Amla, they both judged the leaves well, they both defended with soft hands, they both frustrated India more with every passing delivery. Towards the end, mind games began. Amla took a single late in a Mishra over to face Harbhajan in the next over, Dhoni removed Harbhajan and tried the part-time stuff from Sachin Tendulkar and Sehwag, and got Harbhajan to bowl at Morkel again.Nothing gave. Amla seemed to have found a partner who was holding his nerve well. The desperation on Indian faces kept getting more and more apparent with every passing delivery. With 3.2 overs to go, Amla cut Tendulkar towards the boundary, took a single so as to face two more overs as opposed to one. Sehwag hoped it would reach the boundary as he chased, but slyly tried to kick it over when he saw it stop inches before the rope. Just to keep Morkel on strike. That’s how much it mattered.Amla duly played out the next over, Dhoni duly saved Harbhajan for the over after that. Harbhajan had six more balls left, from the High Court End. The first pitched middle, turned away. The second pitched leg, and broke towards off. The third was the killer slider, Morkel made his first mistake in 60 deliveries. Harbhajan roared, Amla’s expression didn’t change much.

Celtic must sell Soro amid transfer update

Celtic must ruthlessly axe Ismaila Soro in the January transfer window amid a recent update on his future…

What’s the story?

According to The Scottish Sun, the midfielder has emerged as a transfer target for MLS outfit New York Red Bulls, with the Hoops prepared to let him leave on either a loan or a permanent deal.

The report added that they are one of several American clubs interested in landing the Ivorian, and that having fallen out of favour under Ange Postecoglou, he is inching towards an exit from Parkhead.

Time for Soro to go

Dubbed as a player with “explosive power” by his former coach Ori Guttman, comparisons with Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante were also made as some tipped him to become a real star.

Guttman added: “Now he reminds me of N’Golo Kante at Chelsea. Kante maybe doesn’t look like he’s strong, but he is. He wins most duels and tackles. Soro does the same and wins the battles too.

“Both are good at dribbling with the ball. Neither of them score a lot of goals. They need creative guys alongside them in midfield, so they are alike in that way.”

Quite frankly, though, Soro hasn’t lived up to that potential. If anything, he has become somewhat of a liability with his tendency to fly into dangerous and ill-timed tackles – in fact, as per WhoScored, in the Scottish Premiership this season, the midfielder is actually making more fouls per game than successful tackles.

Also, his average match rating of 6.34 is the worst of any Celtic player who has featured more than five times this campaign in the league – a real indication of just how much his performances have fallen, and why selling him could be the right call.

It’s a potential decision which has also previously been backed by Celtic podcaster Patrick McGilp, who said just last month: “I think he’s one that you can try and move on.

“I would move Soro on, try and get something permanent if you can. I’m not too sure about a loan, because I’m talking about how many options we have, but you just never know when an injury crisis is going to hit. So if we can’t sell him, I would just keep him around the place, but if you can get money for him, I’d move him on.”

While at 23 he still has the time to grow and develop, he hasn’t shown enough to suggest that he will do so at Celtic; and even though it may be a ruthless call to get rid of him, it’s perhaps best for both parties to part ways.

The £12.5k-a-week earner simply needs to be moved on.

Meanwhile, Celtic are plotting a January swoop for this forward…

Shakib pleased with World Cup build-up

Bangladesh’s captain believes his team is gelling well in the build-up to the 2011 World Cup in exactly 12 months’ time

Andrew Miller in Chittagong04-Mar-2010

Eye on 2011: Shakib Al Hasan believes Bangladesh are on the right track ahead of cricket’s biggest prize•Associated Press

Bangladesh’s captain, Shakib Al Hasan, believes his team is gelling well in the build-up to the 2011 World Cup in exactly 12 months’ time, and regards the final ODI against England in Chittagong as an opportunity to lay down a significant marker at a venue where the two teams are set to meet again in the group stages of the tournament. On March 11 next year, England will return to Chittagong for their fifth match of the World Cup, and the showdown could potentially prove crucial to their prospects of reaching the quarter-final knock-out stages, given that India and South Africa are among their early opponents. And, having been pushed to the brink in the decisive second ODI in Mirpur on Tuesday, England can expect another trial by spin on Friday, with Bangladesh set to name an unchanged side on a ground that has offered appreciable turn in the past.”Hopefully by the World Cup we will be a very good team,” Shakib told Cricinfo. “We understand our game very well now, and we know what kind of shots we can play and what type of game we have to play. Our mindset is good because there’s no fear, every time a guy goes out he is thinking he has to step up for the team. It’s not about one person standing up, it’s about a team effort.”Although the series has now gone, Bangladesh’s quest for a maiden victory over England continues, despite Shakib’s suggestion on Tuesday that he is more interested in closing the gap on the “bigger” teams in the 50-over game. “We believe we can beat any side if we play to our ability,” he said. “We’ll definitely try to win the game, but we’ll have to keep our processes right. We just need to perform well and keep doing our jobs.”The speed with which Bangladesh learned from their errors in the first ODI, in which Tamim Iqbal scored a brilliant century but found himself completely unsupported, has impressed an England team that has not had a close look at their opponents since a one-sided series back in 2005. With Imrul Kayes and Mushfiqur Rahim knuckling down to produce a pair of crease-occupying fifties, the team was able to bat through its 50 overs, and use the final Powerplay to post a competitive total of 260.”For the last 15-16 months, we’ve been scoring consistently well,” said Shakib. “Imrul and Mushy are playing superbly, and I need to bat well too, but we have some good hitters at the end of the team too. Hopefully we’ll put our big total on the board again, and continue our good performance with the bat.”Unfortunately for Bangladesh, they still made a clutch of critical errors in the second match, most notably in the field, where three catches went down – two of which, off Paul Collingwood and Alastair Cook, proved particularly costly. In addition, England’s matchwinner, Eoin Morgan, survived a brace of lbw appeals from Mahmudullah that might on another day have been upheld. The net result was another case of so near, yet so far.”We stuck to our batting plan, because the boys know the rules and they try to do it every game,” said Bangladesh’s coach, Jamie Siddons. “I thought 260 gave us a good chance if we took our catches, which we didn’t, and if decisions had gone our way, which they didn’t. England would have been in a whole heap of trouble if Morgan had been given out.”But he wasn’t, and even though wickets continued to slip away at the other end, Morgan’s calm demeanour and his uncanny recognition of a scoring opportunity allowed England to sneak home by two wickets in the penultimate over. “I know how big he can hit it, so I always thought he’d be a sticking point in the Powerplay,” admitted Siddons. “Taking on our medium pacers and spinners against the short boundaries was always going to be a problem.”Ultimately, Bangladesh’s decision to revert to the seam of Shafiul Islam proved costly. Having been made to bide his time against the spinners, Morgan used the extra pace to crack 23 match-winning runs in 11 deliveries, but Siddons refused to pin the blame on a rookie in only his second month of international cricket.”It’s always easy in hindsight, but the Powerplay overs have always been a problem for us,” he said. “In the past, we’ve tried Abdur Razzak and he’s gone for 25 in the last over, and we’ve tried Rubel [Hossain] and he’s gone for 20. Shafiul bowls good yorkers in practice, and he’s our Powerplay go-to man, but he just didn’t execute, and you can’t do a thing if you don’t execute. The spinners might have done the same thing.”
