Thirty-six teams, 32 matches and three days of non-stop cricket action would be the best way to describe the 17th edition of the Glucofit Cricket Sixes organised by the Old Wesleyites Sports club.The final day started off with Lumbini Mv, Mahanama College Colombo, Jaffna Combined Schools and Ananda College Colombo already comfortably in the quarter-finals from their merits on day one and two. However none of them could capitalise on moving forward as they fell prey to seasoned campaigners.Lumbini Mv lost to Nalanda College by 32 runs, the favorites from yesterday Jaffna Combined schools lost by two runs to underdogs Richmond College Galle, while Mahanama and Ananda Colleges were undone by St. Joseph’s College and St. Sebastian’s College respectively. The two semi-final matches were electric with four of Sri Lanka’s best schools taking part.The first game between Nalanda and St. Joseph’s was expected to be a one-horse race for the Nalandians. However the Joes had other plans, batting first and racing to 86 for 2 courtesy of a brilliant half-century by Chatura Kumara. Nalanda were never in the hunt and every time they did try to get away with the game, the Josephian bowlers held their nerves and clawed right back, ultimately winning against all odds by a good 35 runs.The second semi-final was a blockbuster with St. Sebastian taking on the in-form Richmond College, who, up that point, did everything right. However inexperience showed as they chased down a mere 55. The boys from the south self-destructed with three run-outs in quick succession to ultimately lose by 13 runs.The final was yet again expected to be an easy victory for St. Sebastian’s given their consistency in the tournament; however the Joes went about their business as usual initially restricting the Sebastian’s to 61 for 2 with some very good bowling and fielding. The highlight in that inning was that both wickets to fall were run-outs.St. Joseph’s started off shakily losing Roscoe Thatil and Chathura Kumara in the first over, but thanks to sensible batting by Jayathilake (28*) and Jayasinghe (21*) the boys from Darley Road managed to win the Glucofit Sixes 2009 in style.Thatil walked away with the best bowler and player of the tournament awards. St. Sebastian’s wicketkeeper PD Dias was adjudged best fielder and even though Chathura Kumara failed in the final he was still the best batsman with most runs and most sixes in the competition. MAS Jayathilake bagged the Man-of-the-Match award for his all-round performance in the final.

Aston Villa are competing with European giants for the signature of River Plate’s Julian Alvarez, according to Argentine outlet Ole (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

The 21-year-old is predominantly a striker but can also operate from the right wing.

He has plundered a mightily impressive 17 goals in just 19 games this season, contributing a further seven assists (via Transfermarkt). Akso, having made his Argentina debut in June, he has now racked up five caps for Lionel Scaloni’s side.

Alvarez has been compared to Spiderman because, from an early age, he controlled the ball so well that it seemed he had four pairs of legs.

The latest

The report from Ole (via Sport Witness) stated that Aston Villa have ‘shown their interest’ in Alvarez, but they’re not the only ‘vulture’ circling.

The likes of Real Madrid, AC Milan, Inter, Juventus and Ajax are all said to be in the frame as well, with the 21-year-old having a €20m (£16.9m) release clause in his contract, which is due to expire next year.

The verdict

Alvarez may not be a player that Aston Villa need, per se, as they’ve signed two strikers in little over a year in Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins. Deals for Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey have also added to their plentiful options out wide.

However, it’s easy to understand why he’s a player they want. His goalscoring record is stunning, and he could go on to become a superstar. Also, a potential investment of £16.9m looks a snip, but whether Villa can beat off such strong competition is another matter entirely.

As per Calciomercato, there has been a development in the chase for a long-time Tottenham Hotspur target as the Lilywhites continue to eye a move Norwich City defender Max Aarons.

Indeed, Football Insider claimed back in April 2020 that Spurs and Mourinho were primed for talks to sign Aarons as they made the youngster their top defensive target.

Spurs maintained that interest through to 2021, with Sky Sports revealing that transfer chief Fabio Paratici had renewed their interest amid their summer search for a right-back.

Now, despite the signing of Emerson Royal in that position, it appears that they haven’t quite abandoned their chase for the Canaries player.

The Latest: Spurs in pole…

As per Calciomercato, it appears that Tottenham are in pole position to sign Aarons, with Antonio Conte’s side apparently having the ‘greatest chance’ of signing him above the likes of Roma, Borussia Dortmund and Everton.

Norwich value the young ace at around €22m (£18.7m), almost half of what they were demanding for his services earlier this year when Bayern Munich came knocking. As per Sky Sports, the Canaries slapped a £35m price tag on Aarons’ head earlier this year, but it now appears that they are willing to let him go for a much lesser amount.

However, that still doesn’t mean they are willing to part ways easily, with Norwich apparently rejecting Roma’s proposal to sign him on loan with an obligation to buy.

The Verdict: Needed addition?

Given the presence of Emerson, along with versatile defensive youngster Japhet Tanganga and Matt Doherty, we believe that Tottenham have bigger priorities than the right-back position.

For instance, the Lilywhites would be better placed prioritising a swoop for a senior centre-forward alternative to Harry Kane, with Fiorentina star Dusan Vlahovic apparently on the agenda.

A top-class centre-half to come in as an option to partner the in-form Eric Dier or Cristian Romero (when he returns from injury) wouldn’t go amiss either, especially either one of Matthijs de Ligt or Stefan de Vrij, who are both said to be targets (Football Insider).

Tottenham’s need to spend money wisely cannot be overstated, especially given that they recently announced an £80.2m pre-tax loss for the last financial year, taking their overall club debt to £706m (The Guardian).

Despite Aarons being lauded as the ‘the perfect right-back’ by pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor (Football Insider), his signing is simply a luxury given other pressing positions.

Indeed, Paratici needs to weigh up more important targets with the transfer kitty he is granted by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

Off the back of two successive agonising defeats – and both for different reasons – Leeds United face the daunting task of games against Arsenal, Liverpool and a resurgent Aston Villa before the end of the year.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were hammered 7-0 by Manchester City in their latest outing, and host Arsenal knowing that they are firmly in that battle to beat the drop.

Injuries have derailed the Whites’ hopes of enjoying another impressive year in the top-flight, but while that is understandably a cause for concern, it can also be a blessing in disguise in other respects: namely, handing an opportunity to some of the club’s brightest young prospects.

Joe Gelhardt has already had his share of first-team football in recent weeks, and now, Cody Drameh should surely be in the frame for a starting spot.

Jamie Shackleton occupied that right-back slot against City before being taken off, and when you consider Bielsa ought to be putting square pegs in square holes, Drameh must figure into the equation for that role going forward.

Indeed, The Athletic’s Phil Hay has even suggested that the 20-year-old could well be the long-term heir to Luke Ayling.

He said: “The point about Drameh was that he could be a natural successor to Ayling, who still has time left but is clearly not in his first flush of youth. Drameh is well thought of and I do feel like he’s got a serious chance here if he’s patient.”

While naturally much of the excitement of Leeds fans will be surrounding Gelhardt, Drameh is another from the U23s group who could really make a name for himself at Elland Road.

At just 20, the versatile ace has got plenty of time to grow and develop, but first-team minutes could be more on offer now that the Whites find themselves in such an injury crisis.

Eredivisie scout Xander Wilkinson was quick to rave about his potential and how good he is already, saying: “Defensively so impressive! His mind works quicker than most right-backs I’ve seen in a naturally defensive mindset. Tactically very aware of what is being asked of him, times his engagements well, needs to add a little more unpredictability going forward.”

Meanwhile, LUTV commentator Tom Hill described the 20-year-old as a “box of tricks” after an impressive performance against Sunderland at U23 level, and that bodes well for his future as a more adventurous full-back.

With the busy festive schedule taking its toll on Leeds’ players, Drameh could finally be unleashed by Bielsa in the Premier League.
