The cricket world has begun to assess the impact on its finances and credibility of the fraud charges levelled against Allen Stanford. The ECB and West Indies Cricket Board, the two boards most closely associated with Stanford, have suspended negotiations with him and indicated that domestic and international tournaments sponsored by him are at risk. The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a complaint on Tuesday in a federal court in Dallas accusing Stanford, who heads the Stanford Financial Group, of fraud in the sale of around US$8 billion of high-yielding certificates of deposits held in his organisation’s bank in Antigua. The crisis will have an immediate impact on some of the future tournaments organized by both the affected boards. The Stanford 20/20 regional series in West Indies is now unlikely to be held. Asked whether the tournament would go ahead, the WICB president Julian Hunte said: “We anticipate that it will not continue (in the immediate future).”He then sought to play down the impact on the WICB. “That is not a difficult matter for us to deal with. Either the WICB on its own or with the assistance of other entrepreneurs, will be able to get a tournament going in a way that will make it financially viable for us.”However, the cancellation of the tournament will deal a significant financial blow to the authorities involved in its organisation. Forbes Persaud, chief executive of the Trinidad and Tobago board, said the immediate financial loss as a result of the cancellation would amount to US$195,000: “Now that this has happened, it would mean that we cannot really look forward to that [money] coming to us again,” Persaud told the . “I don’t like to kick a man when he’s down. What we know is that as we speak, his license has been suspended. To all intents and purposes, the West Indies Cricket Board is not dependent on Stanford for its financial viability.”

Leeds: Kalvin Phillips closing in on new Elland Road deal

An update has emerged regarding Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips’ contract situation at Elland Road.

What’s the talk?

According to Football Insider, the England international is in advanced talks over a big-money contract extension with the Yorkshire club.

The report claimed that the 25-year-old has given the green light to Leeds over their contract proposal, with the midfielder now poised to commit his future to Elland Road ahead of the January transfer window.

Fans will be ecstatic

This fresh update on Phillips’ contract situation will surely leave the Elland Road faithful ecstatic as the local lad looks set to put pen to paper on a new deal. The report states that he wants to get it done and that the two parties are in advanced talks, which suggests that it may not be a million miles away from being finalised and announced by the club.

Imagine the scenes at Elland Road if Leeds decide to announce that Phillips has signed an extension minutes before kick-off at a Premier League home game in the coming months. The crowd would surely roar with excitement given what the player has achieved with the club in recent years.

Phillips made 37 appearances as the Whites stormed to the Championship title in 2019/20 before proving himself to be an excellent Premier League midfielder last term. He averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.01 in 29 top-flight appearances, earning himself a place in the England starting XI for the European Championship in the summer.

England manager Gareth Southgate previously hailed the midfielder and admitted that he was not surprised by Phillips’ ability at international level, saying: “He’s been excellent. The way he has taken to international football, it hasn’t surprised us because what we’d seen with Leeds, even in the Championship, we felt could convert into our team.

“We felt he could play an important role with us. To play in the enormity of the matches he did in the summer and play as well as he did is massive credit to him.”

The £35k-per-week beast started all seven games at Euro 2020 as England lost in the final on penalties to Italy, with Leeds fans given an extra reason to support the nation as a local lad lined up in midfield for Southgate’s side. Along with his form in the Premier League for Marcelo Bielsa’s team, this is why Whites fans will be over the moon with the news that the 25-year-old is on the verge of extending his contract.

Elland Road will be bouncing with joy that one of the club’s key players is not set to leave in the January transfer window, with Manchester United having recently been linked with his signature.

5,0
Lucas

6,0
Ronaldo Alves
Bem no combate individual, não deu chances a H. Dourado.

5,5
Mena

5,5
Rithely
Atuação pouco inspirada do bom meia do Sport. Espera-se mais dele.

7,0
Patrick

5,0
Everton Felipe
Destoou no meio-campo. Não deu sequência aos lances.

7,0
Lenis
Boa apresentação, começando pela assistência para André. Saiu aplaudido.

5,5
Diego Souza

Gambhir has come of age – Srikkanth

Gautam Gambhir’s match-saving 137 in the second Test against New Zealand has impressed Kris Srikkanth, India’s chairman of selectors

Gautam Gambhir’s match-saving 137 in the second Test against New Zealand in Napier has impressed Kris Srikkanth, India’s chairman of selectors. Srikkanth said Gambhir showed tremendous patience and maturity in playing according to the situation after India were asked to follow on.A naturally aggressive player, Gambhir focused on occupying the crease and his innings spanned 643 minutes and 436 deliveries. Srikkanth reflected on the progress Gambhir made since establishing his place in the side.”Gautam has come of age. He has now become a complete batsman,” Srikkanth told the . “For the last couple of years he has been pretty consistent. But this Test saw him raise his game several notches.”I don’t think he has made any technical adjustments. But now he watches the ball more closely and till the end. He has tightened his off-side game, especially leaving deliveries outside the off stump. His judgement as far as the corridor of uncertainty goes is a lot better.”Gambhir was the world’s leading ODI run-scorer in 2008 with 1119 at 46.62. His form in Tests was just as good, finishing fifth in the run charts with 1134 runs at 70.87. He was also the second-highest run-getter in the IPL with 534 runs at 41.07, rounding off an exemplary year in all three formats.Srikkanth felt that Gambhir had developed into a fine opener and his association with Virender Sehwag is currently the best in the world. “You don’t grow into a job overnight. Everybody matures with time. He was always a very capable strokeplayer, but now he has proved that he can bury his head into the ground and guide the team to safety. He is a great player in the making.”He [Sehwag] might not have had a very good Test in Napier, but make no mistake, over the years he has contributed immensely to help Gautam develop his game. Together, they are the best opening combination in world cricket at the moment.”

Newcastle eyeing Adrien Rabiot swoop

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle’s interest in Juventus’ Adrien Rabiot.

What’s the talk?

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, the Magpies are eyeing up a potential swoop for the former PSG midfielder ahead of the January window.

The report claims that a sale could work out for all parties involved as Juventus consider a number of midfield options to potentially replace the 26-year-old.

Imagine him & Willock

PIF could land a dream midfield duo in the form of Rabiot and Joe Willock by landing the Frenchman in January, which is why they must ensure that they can get this deal over the line in the coming months.

The 26-year-old has not enjoyed a brilliant time in Italy with Juventus, failing to average a WhoScored rating of 7.00 or higher in either of his full seasons for the club to date. This could be why they are prepared to cash in on him, but his prior form for PSG suggests that he could be an excellent signing for Newcastle.

In his last five Ligue 1 campaigns in Paris, Rabiot averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.11 or higher as he caught the eye for the French giants. He averaged at least 3.2 tackles and interceptions per game in each season during that spell, whilst he also holds a career average pass completion of 89.9%.

Former Juventus manager Andrea Pirlo previously called him ‘complete’, saying: “He is a complete player, I have rarely seen someone so strong both physically and technically.”

Bianconeri legend Gianluigi Buffon has also lauded him, saying: “He is a fantastic mix, he has the physical strength of Pogba, who is like a wardrobe, has the personality of Vidal and potentially the dynamism of Marchisio. He is incredible, extremely strong.”

Rabiot’s statistics from his time at PSG and these quotes from Buffon and Pirlo suggest that he could have the tenacity and strength to be a solid holding midfielder for the Magpies. This could make him the perfect partner for Joe Willock, who is capable of providing goals from the middle of the park, and PIF must ensure that they can get them playing alongside each other.

The former Arsenal man found the back of the net eight times in 11 Premier League starts for Newcastle last term, having produced three goals and three assists in four Europa League starts for the Gunners earlier in the campaign. This shows that he has the quality to make an impact in the final third and that is why he could thrive alongside Rabiot, who can do the dirty work and break up play to allow Willock to push up and support the attack.

AND in other news, Newcastle make contact with £22.5m-rated “genius”, him and Saint-Maximin could be terrifying…

World Cup shifts base from Lahore to Mumbai

The 2011 World Cup is shifting base from Lahore to Mumbai and India expects to get a “big share” of the 14 matches that were initially allotted to Pakistan

The 2011 World Cup is shifting base from Lahore to Mumbai and India expects to get a “big share” of the 14 matches that were initially allotted to Pakistan. The Indian board (BCCI) is hosting a meeting in Mumbai tomorrow where the tournament’s organising committee will be reconstituted without representatives from Pakistan, which was stripped of its co-host status this month due to the prevailing political situation in the country.A decision is also expected to be taken to move the tournament’s central organising secretariat, its operational nerve centre, from Lahore to Mumbai.Apparently, the re-allotment of Pakistan’s 14 matches will also be discussed at the meeting. “Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are the co-hosts and out of those two, Bangladesh has only one venue to host all the matches,” BCCI sources said. “So obviously, India will expect to get a big share of those matches.”The sources, however, admitted that one potential hurdle for the event would be if Pakistan refuses to play its matches in Indian venues because of cross-border political tensions. “In that case, Pakistan’s matches will have to held in Lanka or Bangladesh but there’s two years to go and it’s too early to comment on that now,” the sources said. The ICC executive board on April 17 had resolved not to hold any 2011 World Cup matches in Pakistan because the “uncertain political situation” in the country would have made it difficult to “deliver a safe, secure and successful event”.In January, the PCB had named Salman Sarward Butt, a banker, as managing director of the tournament’s central organising secretariat but Haroon Lorgat, the ICC’s chief executive, is now expected to announce a new set-up in Mumbai after Tuesday’s meeting. Sharad Pawar, the ICC vice-president, heads the tournament’s organising committee.
