Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer has told The Transfer Tavern that he cannot see Burnley needing to recall goalkeeper Peacock-Farrell.

The 24-year-old is currently on loan at Wednesday from Burnley and has made an impressive start to life in his new surroundings, winning the club’s Player of the Month award for August.

However, Owls boss Darren Moore recently confirmed that Burnley do have an option to recall Peacock-Farrell should they need to.

Such a development could easily disrupt Wednesday’s challenge for promotion, but Palmer cannot imagine too many scenarios that would require Burnley to bring Peacock-Farrell back to Turf Moor.

“It’s standard to have a recall clause,” the ex-Wednesday player said in an exclusive interview with TT. “I mean, they’d have to have injuries, Burnley, to three senior ‘keepers for them to have to recall him. So it’s very unlikely that would happen.”

As for Peacock-Farrell’s long-term future, returning to Burnley and becoming their No.1 looks like it is going to be a difficult task.

Nick Pope is currently Sean Dyche’s first choice for that position between the sticks and is arguably one of the leading ‘keepers in the Premier League. Last season, he kept 11 clean sheets, a record bettered by only four other shot-stoppers in the division.

وأضاف في تصريحات نقلتها صحيفة “ديلي ميل” البريطانية: “أعتقد أن الفريق وهاري نفسه أعجبوا بالطريقة التي لعبنا بها”.

واختتم المدرب الهولندي: “نحن لدينا النية للعب كرة قدم رائعة، الأمر يتعلق أولاً بفلسفتنا، نُريد أن نلعب كرة قدم هجومية، علينا أن نركز على طريقة لعبنا ونفعل كل شيء بشكل صحيح”.

عبر سيف الجزيري لاعب الفريق الأول لكرة القدم بنادي الزمالك، عن سعادته بحصد بطولة كأس مصر على حساب الأهلي، مشيرًا إلى أن تغييره جاء لسبب فني.

ونجح الزمالك في حصد لقب كأس مصر للمرة 28 في تاريخه، بعد الفوز على الأهلي أمس الخميس بهدفين لهدف في المباراة النهائية التي أقيمت على استاد القاهرة.

وأوضح: “تغييري من المباراة كان لسبب فني وليس للإصابة، وأي لاعب في العالم يمر بفترة فيها هبوط المستوى”.

واختتم: “وأنا في الفترة الأخيرة ما وجدته من المسؤولين والإدارة والجهاز كانوا يقفوا بجانبي وداعمين لي”.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has confirmed that Leeds United will be without Patrick Bamford for the Premier League clash against West Ham on Saturday afternoon.

What’s the story?

Amid a difficult start in the top flight which has seen Marcelo Bielsa’s side lie just above the relegation zone, it appears that they’ve been handed yet another damaging blow to their chances of picking up a much-needed victory.

Writing on Twitter, Hay said: “From Bielsa’s press conference – Bamford, Koch and Llorente all out of Saturday game against West Ham with injuries. Struijk suspended. Decisions still to be made on Raphinha, Harrison and Ayling. #lufc”

Fans will be gutted

Bamford was an absolute sensation in the Premier League last season for the Whites, banging in 17 goals and providing another eight assists in 38 games.

In fact, only Spurs talisman Harry Kane outscored the Leeds star in the top flight in terms of English players, while only the Three Lions captain, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish provided more assists than him from the English contingent.

Speaking earlier this year, Match of the Day pundit and former Arsenal marksman Ian Wright waxed lyrical about the striker, and even gave credit to the Elland Road fanbase for the role they’ve had in Bamford’s successes.

He said: “You look at what Bamford has been through, six loan moves, his upbringing, private school stuff, Palace fans complaining about the way he runs – he has been through so much. People told him he would never be a Premier League striker.

“But Leeds fans deserve credit for sticking by him, even when you looked at some of those games and he did miss some easy chances. The manager stuck with him, and it will be difficult to find a manager with as much faith in Bielsa.”

Given the kind of importance that Bamford has in this Leeds side when it comes to scoring the bulk of their goals, missing him for today’s game against West Ham is a huge blow for Bielsa.

Leeds fans will surely be worried about who will step up to the plate in his absence at centre-forward, especially with Raphinha and Harrison also doubtful.

Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lanka captain, believes his team will need to cut out the mistakes they made in the first two games if they are to challenge a ‘confident and consistent’ Indian side in the remaining three matches of the ODI series. Down 2-0, Sri Lanka are one loss away from conceding the series, and Jayawardene said the team realises the importance of Tuesday’s game at the Premadasa Stadium.”We know exactly if we lose this we lose the series. This game is very crucial for us. We can’t think too far ahead of ourselves but try and concentrate on the game at hand,” he said. “I don’t have to tell the boys. They understand the situation that we are in. I am happy with the way the guys are playing. There is nothing for me to tell to pull their socks up. They understand the mistakes we made in different areas of our game.”Sri Lanka lost the toss in both defeats, but Jayawardene felt it had not been that big a factor. “You can’t complain about it,” he said. “Like what we showed the other day it’s not going to make much of a difference if you really work yourself into it [Sri Lanka lost by 15 runs chasing 257 under lights at the Premadasa]. The first ten overs with the new ball, whether it’s under lights or not, is going to do a bit. That’s something both teams have to cope with. After that you can bat normally I guess.”In contrast to what the scoreline suggests, Jayawardene said the teams were evenly matched, but admitted his side had been unable to “finish the job”. “India’s confidence level is pretty high because of what they have been doing in the last six months. They have been very consistent. India are in a stage where the players realise what their roles are in the team and they’re trying to consistently do that. That’s something we lack. We have the talent in doing it but we are not finishing the job for the team. If we can do that and create more pressure on them we can probably ask a few questions.”The lack of wickets for Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis – they have combined figures of 40-1-175-3 – was not a worry for Jayawardene. “The Indian batsmen are not taking chances against our spinners,” he said. “I think that can work for us because they are not going for too many runs. At the same time if they can pick up one or two wickets I will be very happy.”They have been consistent although they are not picking up wickets and they are bowling well. The other bowlers who have been match-winners for us are going for a few runs. If they can tighten up a bit more because they know India are taking chances against them they can create opportunities to pick up wickets.”

O técnico Dorival Júnior está há dois jogos no comando do São Paulo, mas já tem muito com que se preocupar. Neste domingo, a equipe caiu para a Chapecoense por 2 a 0 na Arena Condá e completou nove jogos sem vencer no Campeonato Brasileiro. O comandante ficou assustado com a falta de poder de reação do time, que não conseguiu criar chances após sofrer o primeiro gol, aos 17 minutos do segundo tempo.

-É inaceitável isso. É natural que estejamos preocupados e bastante. Percebemos que quando fizemos os gols contra o Atlético-GO também houve um desarranjo. Quando sofremos o gol, tivemos 20 minutos, mas houve um descontrole desnecessário, por tudo que vinha demonstrando. Era questão de tempo para conseguir uma tabela, uma definição. Mas é isso, momento difícil, conturbado, mas só nós podemos sair dessa situação – analisou Dorival.

Dorival também lamentou a fragilidade defensiva do time. Com o treinador, o time sofreu quatro gols em dois jogos. E todos após falhas individuais. Na última quinta, Cueva, Rodrigo Caio e Júnior Tavares foram mal em lances cruciais. Neste domingo, o lateral-esquerdo voltou a errar nos dois gols.

-Detalhe final, né? A equipe fez um jogo equilibrado em termos de posicionamento. Trabalhando com paciência. Pecamos muito no parte final, isso sim. Pecamos muito nas finalizações, como foi no início do jogo anterior. E temos de trabalhar, para minimizar essa situação, que nos deixa muito expostos. Qualquer situação acaba entrando no nosso gol – disse Dorival.

A situação preocupa?
Natural que preocupe, não estamos aceitando essa situação. Temos de ter o equilíbrio, para neutralizar esses erros. Diminuir, porque como falei, toda situação criada acaba indo no nosso gol. Nossa equipe mostrou uma evolução, mas a jogada final, ainda tem dificuldade. E diminui as oportunidades.

O que pode falar para o Cueva, que ainda não está jogando o que se espera dele?
Nada. Espero que ele readquira sua condição. É um jogador importante, e não tenho dúvidas de que ele vai nos ajudar.

Precisa de reforços?
Conversaremos com a diretoria, natural, internamente. Temos de fazer com equilíbrio nesse momento. Foram muitas as chegadas e saídas, isso acabou conturbando o trabalho. Temos de dar sequência maior a jogadores que estão chegando. Tem jogador com 20 dias de clube, como o Petros. Alguns com 25, 30. E mesmo assim acho que alguma coisa de bom a equipe começa a mostrar. Natural que sem o resultado, tudo entra no mesmo contexto. Mas aos poucos vamos encontrando o caminho. Essa equipe pode muito mais.

Há ansiedade exagerada dos atletas?
Existe. Fato natural, são grandes jogadores. Acaba tirando um pouco da confiança, um resultado anormal. Eu tenho que dar razão a eles, não de não falar. Mas de falar menos e falar mais. Tem de ter paciência. São Paulo precisa de uma vitória para ter uma confiança maior. Tivemos novamente umas situações muito boas, que não se completam, porém. Talvez seja esse o caminho para encontrar soluções.

Quando vai reagir?
Situação muito ruim. Não tem um número que fale “na rodada seguinte, tudo vai se abrir”. Temos de tirar força de onde não temos para sair dessa situação.

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has delivered a promising update on Newcastle United’s potential takeover following the recent hearing.

What’s the story?

The journalist shed some light on some of the news coming out from the Competition Appeal Tribunal hearing, including the fact that a takeover could be approved by the top-flight based one one major condition.

He said: “The potential takeover of Newcastle United by a Saudi Arabian-backed consortium could be sanctioned by the Premier League if it is decided at arbitration that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) will not be a director of the club.

“Primary amongst them is whether the government of KSA itself, or representatives of the Saudi state, must undergo the Premier League’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test (OADT). This is the point which initially led to the takeover being stalled, before the consortium’s official withdrawal in July 2020. Mr Lewis QC claimed that the Saudis’ reluctance to undertake the test was the “single impediment” to completion of the takeover by the consortium, which also includes 10 per cent stakes for Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners and the billionaire Reuben Brothers.

“If the arbitration decides that KSA is not a director,” he said, “then the transaction can and will go ahead, with no question of the OADT being applied to the KSA.”

Bit of hope for fans

Make no mistake about it, the sooner this gets resolved one way or another, the better for the future of Newcastle.

The Magpies have been in a state of uncertainty for far too long now, and the lack of genuine communication from the Premier League and Richard Masters, and open dialogue has caused some serious mistrust issues.

But, this latest update from Waugh following the hearing does give Newcastle fans a bit of hope that a positive conclusion whereby the takeover goes ahead could come to fruition sometime in the near future.

If it’s established that KSA will not become a director of the club upon the change in ownership, then it seems it could be relatively smooth sailing so to speak, and usher in a new, and much-needed era at St James’ Park.
