Tatenda Taibu, the former Zimbabwe captain, has been left out the Zimbabwe Select side to play Sri Lanka in the opening match of their tour due to personal reasons.”We dropped him from the squad because he has personal issues to deal with,” Kenyon Ziehl, the convener of selectors, said. “At this level of the game, we cannot send a player onto the field if he is not in the right frame of mind.”Taibu was involved in a fracas with a board official last month and was only persuaded to join Zimbabwe’s tour of Canada and Kenya an hour before the squad left Harare after initially pulling out. He is understood still to be at odds with senior members of Zimbabwe Cricket.National captain Prosper Utseya will lead the Select XI, which is close to a full-strength Zimbabwe side, in the only first-class match of the tour which includes five ODIs.Wilfred Mukondiwa, the deputy managing director of Zimbabwe Cricket, said he hoped that including the four-day match will help the country stake a claim for a return to Test level. “The four-day game that begins at the Queens Sports Club on Wednesday might not be that important to Sri Lanka, but is of significance to us as it is part of our programme to give our maturing side more exposure to the longer version of the game in preparation for our resumption of Tests.”However, in the lead-up to the Sri Lanka series two further players have left Zimbabwe after falling out with the board. Sean Williams, the allrounder, and wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor have headed overseas to play club cricket to further weaken the resources available.Ray Price is another absentee, but sources close to the board suggest that he has been told he is not part of future plans. This is taken by some as a sign that hardline elements within ZC have increased their influence over selection issues. Robin Brown, who was replaced as coach earlier this year, clashed with board members who were demanding that more black players be included in the side.Squad Propser Utseya (capt), Regis Chakabva, Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Elton Chigumbura, Graeme Cremer, Keith Dabengwa, Trevor Garwe, Timycen Maruma, Hamilton Masakadza, Shingirayi Masakadza, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Christopher Mpofu, Tawanda Mupariwa and Tafadzwa Ngulube.

Everton must unleash Yerry Mina on Burnley

Not too many issues have emerged since Rafa Benitez took charge of Everton but if we really want to criticise an aspect of their play, you don’t need to look too much further than their defence.

They have kept just one clean sheet in the league so far and even conceded to Championship opposition in dismal fashion during a Carabao Cup game.

On the chalkboard

With plenty of defensive injuries, you can hardly blame a few indifferent performances at the back.

Yet, a pairing of Mason Holgate and Michael Keane was never going to go down too well.

The former made a horrendous mistake against Aston Villa towards the back end of last season when he was caught in possession after turning back towards his own goal which allowed Ollie Watkins to find the net.

A similar error occurred with Keane this term as well. Too slow to turn just beyond the halfway line, Patrick Bamford stole in and then supplied Mateusz Klich’s strike in the clash with Leeds.

They didn’t concede against Brighton but with an encounter against Burnley to come on Monday evening, they need some stronger players physically.

This is where Yerry Mina comes in. The Colombian missed the game with the Seagulls a fortnight ago and hasn’t been a pillar of solidity himself this term.

He endured a pitiful clash with Bamford in that draw with Leeds where he was ultimately described as an “embarrassment” by Jeff Stelling and “pathetic” by Michael Dawson on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday.

Yet, his profile will be extremely important against a team that play in the way Burnley do. Standing at 6 foot 5, the centre-back is a colossal presence and can consequently use that to his advantage.

Last term, the £135k-per-week earner won 2.8 aerial duels per game which was the second-highest value of any central defender at Goodison Park.

So far this season, no other team has played more balls above shoulder height in the Premier League per 90 minutes than Burnley. Despite playing one fewer game than everybody else barring their Monday opponents, the Clarets have registered 118 high balls per 90.

They have also won more aerial duels per 90 (26.7) than every other team in the Premier League. For context, Everton have only been victorious in 15.7 over the same metric.

With that in mind, Mina simply has to start on Monday night. Using the height he possesses, he could be the difference in preventing Burnley’s long-ball game.

AND in other news, Forget Keane: Everton must unleash “powerful” £68k-p/w beast, he’s Rafa’s game-changer…

Marshall hundred can't stop innings defeat for Northern Districts

Josh Brodie and James Franklin posted hundreds as Wellington won by an innings and 12 runs over Northern Districts

Cricinfo staff04-Dec-2008Josh Brodie and James Franklin posted hundreds as Wellington registered a formidable first-innings total of 520 that pushed them to an innings-and-12-run win over Northern Districts at the Basin Reserve. Brodie, a 21-year-old playing his fourth first-class game, passed fifty for the first time on the way to a breakthrough 110 while Franklin boosted his quest to be included in New Zealand’s squad as an allrounder with 160.Faced with making 210 to force a second Wellington innings, Northern Districts were dismissed for 198 after drinks in the third session of the final day. The captain James Marshall stood out with an unbeaten 105, but he did not receive much assistance as Mark Gillespie took his match haul to eight wickets. Graeme Aldridge’s 63 helped Northern Districts to 310 in their first innings after they won the toss. The home side’s bowling was led by Gillespie, who took 4 for 81, while Graham Napier picked up three wickets on the opening day.

Conseguimos pontos acima do esperado.

Tendulkar, Zaheer included in Mumbai's semis squad

Mumbai’s march towards their 38th Ranji crown has been bolstered by the inclusion of Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan to the 15-man squad for their Ranji Trophy semi-final clash against Saurashtra to be played in Chennai from January 4-7.

Mumbai’s march towards their 38th Ranji Trophy crown has been bolstered by the inclusion of Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan in the 15-man squad for their semi-final clash against Saurashtra. The match will be played in Chennai from January 4-7.The last time the duo played for Mumbai, the team won the title – in 2006-07, against Bengal. That was Pravin Amre’s first year as Mumbai coach and he has pleasant memories of the campaign, which culminated in the 132-run win in the final at the Wankhede Stadium. Both players had an impact, Tendulkar scoring a vital first-innings century and Zaheer picking up nine wickets for the match. No wonder Amre was enthusiastic about their return to the side. “It will be a boost for our youngsters, who have already done well. Their presence will be highly motivating as the players will expect to do well along with them,” he said.During the league phase of the current season, Tendulkar chipped in with advice at a crucial juncture. Mumbai had just returned after a disappointing performance against Saurashtra, where they had to fight to save the game after following on. It was a wake-up call and, with three games to go, they could not afford to relax.Back in town, after the England ODI series was cut short in the wake of the terror attacks in Mumbai, Tendulkar spent some valuable time with the team members ahead of their home tie against Hyderabad.”During one-to-one sessions the player is more open since there is more privacy and that is always more effective,” said Amre.Subsequently every game Mumbai played ended in an outright victory. Despite being the best team, there are some pending issues, especially in the bowling department, where the early advantage has been squandered.Even in the quarter-finals, Himachal Pradesh were reeling at 75-5 but managed to reach 250 in their first innings and forced Mumbai to bat a second time, though the former champions had a 245-run lead.Amre feels that is where Zaheer’s experience will prove crucial. “He will be like a role model, a big help in providing key inputs to the fast bowlers.”The selectors have made three other changes to the 15-man squad for the last-four clash: Ankit Chavan replaces fellow left-arm spinner Iqabal Abdulla while Prafulla Waghela and Rahil Shaikh make way for Tendulkar and Zaheer.Wasim Jaffer remains captain.Squad: Wasim Jaffer (c), Sachin Tendulkar, Ajinkya Rahane, Sahil Kukreja, Amol Muzumdar, Rohit Sharma, Ajit Agarkar, Vinayak Samant (wk), Sairaj Bahutule, Ramesh Powar, Zaheer Khan, Dhawal Kulkarni, Abhishek Nayar, Usman Malvi and Ankit Chavan; Pravin Amre (coach)

Phil Hay provides key Leeds United update

Leeds United have officially appealed Pascal Struijk’s red card against Liverpool, following his controversial sending off at the weekend.

The Lowdown: Stuijk involved in sad incident

The Whites may have lost 3-0 to the Reds on Sunday afternoon as Marcelo Bielsa’s side suffered a disappointing day at the office, but Harvey Elliott’s injury was the main talking point from the game.

The Liverpool youngster suffered a dislocated ankle after a challenge from Struijk in the second half and the Leeds defender received his marching orders from referee Craig Pawson.

The Latest: Hay confirms appeal

According to The Athletic‘s Hay on Twitter, Leeds have appealed the decision, hopefully leading to Struijk’s suspension being wiped out:

“Leeds have confirmed that an appeal has now been submitted.”

The Verdict: Big impact

What happened to Elliott was sad to see, given his potential as a young and upcoming player, but there was no malice in Struijk’s tackle.

Granted, there is an argument to say that it was endangering an opponent, but a red card seemed harsh and reactionary, with the referee clearly feeling the need to take action once he had seen the consequences of the tackle.

It was a decision that is sure to divide opinion, but Struijk can think himself unlucky if the appeal isn’t successful. And, following Diego Llorente’s injury, this decision could have a massive impact on the next couple of weeks of the season for Bielsa and co.

In other news, Hay has also provided a double injury update. Read more here.

Pakistan not to host 2009 Champions Trophy

The ICC has decided not to stage the postponed 2009 Champions Trophy in Pakistan after several members expressed reservations about touring the troubled country

Cricinfo staff01-Feb-20092010 World Twenty20 venues accepted The ICC has accepted the West Indies board’s recommendation that the 2010 World Twenty20 be held in Barbados, Guyana, and St. Lucia. A women’s World Twenty20 will be held alongside the men’s tournament and the women’s semi-finals and final will take place on the same day and at the same venue as the men’s matches. The ICC has decided not to stage the postponed 2009 Champions Trophy in Pakistan after several members expressed reservations about touring the troubled country on the second day of its board meeting in Perth. The location of the event, however, is yet to be finalised, but a decision is expected before the board’s next scheduled meeting in April.”It is unfortunate the ICC Champions Trophy will not take place in Pakistan due to circumstances completely beyond the control of the PCB,” Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, said. “However, the board has accepted the need for certainty in planning for and delivering a world-class event and will now assess where the event should be held.”The tournament, originally scheduled for September 2008, had been postponed by a year after a number of participating countries raised concerns over touring Pakistan due to security concerns. Although Pakistan will not host the event, they will retain the revenue due for hosting the tournament, the ICC board decided. The ICC also offered to form a task team to visit Pakistan and work with the PCB “to find ways to ensure that, wherever possible, international cricket is played in the country in the future”. Pakistan has struggled to attract touring teams for a number of years owing to their concerns over its security. Two home series, against Australia and West Indies, were relocated in the aftermath of the 9/11 bombings in America in 2001, and Australia also postponed their full tour of Pakistan last year. India then pulled out of a tour starting in January this year in the aftermath of the Mumbai terrorist strikes, following which Sri Lanka agreed to a split tour.Former Pakistan captain and commentator Ramiz Raja, however, was disappointed with the decision to shift the tournament. “I think Pakistan has done enough to tell the world that cricket is not targeted in the country,” he told AFP. “While the PCB wanted to host the Champions Trophy, they insisted to host Australia on a neutral venue in April. That must have confused the decision-makers.”Managing security and terrorism intelligence has been high on the agenda for the ICC, and it was believed the attacks on Mumbai and the troubled security situation in Pakistan which led to the postponement of the Champions Trophy may have also prompted the ICC to consider extending the purview of the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU).The Champions Trophy is expected to rake in around US$40 million, most of which will be redeployed for the development of the game.
