Wicket-keeper Gazzard ready to take his chance

The 19-year-old Cornishman who progressed through the Somerset Academy had a succesful season for the Second XI and kept wicket for England Under-19s in 2000

Richard Walsh21-Feb-2002Earlier on today at the County Ground, young Somerset wicket-keeper Carl Gazzard told me: “I’m fit, hungry and eager to play first team cricket.”The 19-year-old Cornishman who progressed through the Somerset Academy had a succesful season for the Second XI and kept wicket for England Under-19s in 2000. However he injured his shoulder playing cricket in Perth during the following winter and missed the whole of last season.”It’s almost a year to the day that I had my operation and it’s been a frustrating time for me. Never more so than sitting on the balcony at Lord’s when we won the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy. I wanted to be out there playing for Somerset,” he said.Since early October Carl has been working to get himself back to full fitness, and has acted as a guinea pig for many of the new training methods that have been introduced.Head of injury prevention Darren Veness told me: “Carl is amazing, he is a revelation the way that he has worked, you just can’t fault him. He went through a lot of pain last year. All of the players know that if they miss out they have got to come back big time to make a threat, and now he’s up for it.”Somerset Coach Kevin Shine added: “He has shown fantastic character to come back from the injury that he suffered. Mark Garaway, who is probably one of the best wicket-keeping coaches in the country, rates him very highly. We both think that we have a first-class cricketer on our hands.”With less than two months to go until the start of the 2002 season Carl told me: “The new season is getting closer and closer. I just want to get out there on the field and get the chance to play for the first team. The first big date is March 18th when we all report back. At that point I’ll look at the season and hopefully I’ll get a chance in one of the pre-season friendlies.”What I really need is to get some big scores early on in the season for the Seconds to stake my claim. Of course Rob is the number one keeper, second only to Jack Russell in my opinion, but if he has a run of bad form or is injured then I’m ready to take my chance.”

Liverpool fans want Tsimikas to stay

A number of Liverpool supporters want Kostas Tsimikas to stay at Anfield beyond this summer, following a report claiming that he could leave.

The left-back arrived from Olympiakos last summer, with Jurgen Klopp seeing him as someone who could provide competition for Andy Robertson.

It turned out to be a hugely frustrating first year at Liverpool for Tsimikas, however, with the Greece international limited to just six minutes of Premier League action. It meant that Robertson’s workload became too great and the Scot was unable to maintain his usual world-class standards as fatigue eventually set in.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], Napoli are keen on a loan move for Tsimikas this summer, with Klopp ‘never convinced’ by him last season.

Liverpool fans call for Tsimikas to stay put

It remains to be seen if the Reds are willing to sell, but these fans took to Twitter to say that the Greek defender should stay at the club ahead of next season given the lack of cover for Robertson elsewhere.

“We have to keep Tsimikas. Idc if there’s even reasonable bids that would give us a profit. He’s done well in the few games he was given. Missed half a season due to injuries and then without any CBs Jurgen wanted keep playing Robbo for experience. He will be needed more next season”

Kiwi hitmen give New Zealand the chance to tie Test series

New Zealand’s aggressive last session batting under artificial light at Eden Park tonight kicked down the English barricades to tying the National Bank Test series with England and set up a superb final day to the series tomorrow

Lynn McConnell02-Apr-2002New Zealand’s aggressive last session batting under artificial light at Eden Park tonight kicked down the English barricades to tying the National Bank Test series with England and set up a superb final day to the series tomorrow.England attempted to slow down the over rate, bowling 12 overs in the first half of the extended last session, but the tactic rebounded on them when the lights at the ground kicked in and lit up the scene as New Zealand plundered the bowling. An amazing 417 runs were scored on the day and in the 41.2 overs of the last session New Zealand scored 216 runs. They finished the day on 269/9, a lead of 311 runs.It was another amazing day of cricket as New Zealand’s batsmen enjoyed rare plunder as Chris Harris (43), Nathan Astle (65) and Craig McMillan (50 not out) feasted on a situation that gathered in momentum and allowed them open slather.Astle’s 65 off 51 balls was a mini-Jade Stadium as he hit two sixes and eight fours. Harris was dismissed for 43 halfway through a whirlwind period when 118 runs were added in 14 overs. When Harris was dismissed at 166/4, it was around that time that the light became marginal.England captain Nasser Hussain was clearly angered that his fieldsmen were disadvantaged in the light conditions, although that didn’t stop Mark Butcher taking a boundary catch to dismiss a rampant Astle nor wicket-keeper James Foster taking a catch to dismiss Daniel Vettori.England’s Graham Thorpe later commented that the decision to use the lights had favoured New Zealand and gave them an advantage because it had been tricky in the field.”One side should not have an advantage over the other,” he said.It was not a good day for the English and the umpires, especially local umpire Doug Cowie and his decision to give Andrew Flintoff out, caught when his bat was nowhere near the ball. But as New Zealand dismissed England for 160, to enjoy a lead of 42 runs, a lead which was purposefully extended by Mark Richardson and Adam Parore before the later onslaught. They put on 53 runs before Parore was out in the last over before tea for 36 and New Zealand coach Denis Aberhart couldn’t compliment the pair of them enough afterwards. They had set the later run-scoring up by getting on top of the new ball which has seen many wickets taken in this game so far.”It was important that Richardson and Parore got us away to a good start and they did.”We probably got more runs than we expected to get by stumps tonight and that was the result of good batting through the middle from Harris, Astle and McMillan, who built on that start,” he said.Stephen Fleming was out just after the resumption for one and then Richardson was caught for 25 when trying to up his scoring rate. That saw Harris and Astle come together in what developed into the crucial period of the game. After slowly building up, the rumble of Astle getting his artillery primed soon became a roar when he started to get into Andy Caddick’s bowling with successive cover driven boundaries.Harris wasn’t excluded from the hitting frenzy and played some lovely drives, straight and through the covers.Hussain introduced Ashley Giles to try and keep New Zealand’s scoring genie in the lamp but it was to no avail.Butcher was hit for successive boundaries by Harris, and then Astle hammered Giles’ replacement Flintoff onto the second deck of the West Stand, a big hit under any circumstances, and then to backward square leg, a much shorter distance, although the six was dropped over the boundary by Usman Afzaal. It was entertaining cricket as New Zealand created the chance for a fascinating conclusion to the series tomorrow.Aberhart said: “We need as much time as we can to bowl the English out, the wicket is still doing a bit, there is a bit more uneven bounce and our bowlers are starting to hit their straps.”It is important that we do give ourselves enough time to bowl them out, we’ll have a look in the morning and see what we want to do.”We were the team that had the opportunity when given the light for the first time and we’ve got to win this match being 1-0 down in the series so we may be more pro-active in some ways in carrying on.”Aberhart said that if the tables were reversed tomorrow and England were looking for the runs for victory, New Zealand would play the game.”It was a great advertisement for Test cricket. We have lost a lot of time in this game and if we weren’t able to play under lights it would have finished at 150 tonight and we would have missed something special.”So if it is the same situation tomorrow night and we need two wickets and they want a few runs, hopefully they’ll carry on and we’ll take the last two wickets.”I think it’s far better to be able to play in those conditions and carry on to give the public cricket because, really, that was a good day’s cricket.”

Leeds: Marcelo Bielsa wanted by Fiorentina

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is now being wanted by Fiorentina to take over the reins at the Serie A club.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that the Argentine is expected to put pen to paper on a new contract at Elland Road, with Fabrizio Romano claiming that this should be done “soon”.

However, RAI journalist Sara Meini has revealed that Fiorentina are plotting a move to lure Bielsa away from Yorkshire, adding that he figures among the contenders to take over the manager’s job there.

Nightmare for Andrea Radrizzani

Make no mistake about it, losing Bielsa this summer would be the kind of seismic blow from which Leeds would find it extremely difficult to recover.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Brian Deane said of the Argentine: “He’s brought a massive change to the club and I don’t know what the figures are, but he’s delivered. He’s over-delivered.

“I think their target was to finish fourth bottom and look where they are in the table, so he’s doing something good. And I’m sure these guys have factored into any budget that they’re going to offer the manager.”

Touching on what Bielsa has managed to do at Leeds, former Wigan manager Paul Jewell told FFC: “What I like about Bielsa is, and I think he can speak English but he’s pulling our legs, so fair play to him, but what I like about him is that he doesn’t make excuses.

“The difference he’s made to those Leeds players like Dallas, Cooper and Ayling, the list is endless. They were Championship players, and not great ones, but he’s turned them into Premier League players.

“He deserves unbelievable credit and he won’t have a trophy at the end of the season, but what a manager he is.”

As Jewell says, Bielsa has turned essentially lower-division players into fully-fledged Premier League stars, and even internationals in the case of England hero Kalvin Phillips.

It would be a massive nightmare for Radrizzani to lose Bielsa to Fiorentina, and it’s exactly why he must be proactive in trying to get the Argentine to put pen to paper on a new deal at Leeds as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Leeds are eyeing this Copa America star…

Além do gol, muita movimentação.

Everton interested in Ivan Toney move

Everton are on the verge of appointing Rafa Benitez as their new manager but it’s an appointment that’s set to rock the fan base.

Protests have occurred and unsavoury signs have even been left outside of the Spaniard’s home in Merseyside.

What’s the word?

Even if fans aren’t keen on seeing the 61-year-old arrive at Goodison Park, they must at least give him an opportunity to hit the ground running.

Benitez is a Champions League winner and has multiple domestic honours under his belt. He could also have the lure for players considering a move to Everton.

One such man who could arrive is Brentford striker Ivan Toney. The electric forward has been linked with a plethora of Premier League clubs after a stellar term in the Championship.

According to Peterborough’s director of football, Barry Fry, Everton could be a destination.

In an interview with This is Futbol, he said: “I still think people like Everton and even Chelsea (want him). I know Chelsea are looking at the top range of centre-forwards but I know they’ve watched him and like him and if they don’t get A, B, and C, who knows?

“Then I expect Ivan to go for £40m, £45m, £50m, but now he’s got them in the Premier League, only the top clubs could afford him.”

Fabulous signing

You may look at the idea of signing Ivan Toney as a luxury buy. After all, the Toffees already have Dominic Calvert-Lewin in their ranks.

The England international enjoyed the best campaign of his career in 2020/21, beating the goalkeeper on 21 occasions.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-transfer-nuno-conte-wood-marcelo” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

However, he’s been linked with a move to both Manchester United and Real Madrid in recent months.

That would be a disastrous reign to Benitez’s tenure but he could make an instant impact by luring Toney to the club.

He’s never played a game in the Premier League but his goalscoring record is mouth-watering, bagging goals at every level.

The 25-year-old found the back of the net 26 times in League One during 2019/20 before scoring 33 goals as Brentford were promoted to the Premier League last term.

With a record like that, it would be a transfer for Everton fans to stand and marvel at.

The attacker’s qualities stem well beyond his goal-scoring abilities, though.

Speaking to Peterborough Today last year, Fry commented: He’s turned into a tremendous all-round footballer. It’s important to remember Ivan is not just an exceptional goal-scoring forward, he’s also an outstanding defender.”

Strong in the air, he wins 3.4 aerial duels per game, adding a further string to his impressive bow.

Benitez might not be well liked by Everton supporters but they’d surely be enthralled if he brought Toney to the club.

AND in other news, Brands could seal huge Gomes upgrade at Everton by signing “world-class” £30m star…
