CPFC: Fans react to club’s Van Aanholt post

A number of Crystal Palace fans have been reacting to the club’s official Twitter post to left-back Patrick van Aanholt.

The 30-year-old has just a number of weeks remaining on his Palace deal and was actually included in the Eagles’ initial released list which came out earlier this month.

Reports have suggested he won’t be offered new terms and will leave Selhurst Park when his contract expires.

Van Aanholt is currently away with the Netherlands at Euro 2020 and started under former Palace manager Frank de Boer in a 3-2 win over Ukraine.

He played just over an hour of the Group C fixture but was branded a ‘poor defender’ by Gary Neville after getting on the wrong side of Andriy Yarmolenko in the first half.

Palace tweeted a recap regarding their internationals on Monday morning, leading with van Aanholt’s involvement in the Netherlands’ weekend victory.

Drum-Walker act makes a mess of Canterbury

Auckland ripped through Canterbury today on the third day of their State Championship match at Eden Park as the visitors appeared to forget that the primary aim of batting is to score runs

Chris Rosie14-Feb-2002Auckland ripped through Canterbury today on the third day of their State Championship match at Eden Park as the visitors appeared to forget that the primary aim of batting is to score runs.Ninety-four was the paltry return from their first innings as Chris Drum attacked from one end and Brooke Walker spun a stifling web around the batsmen at the other. The Canterbury opener Shanan Stewart’s 27 was the only score past 20 as the Canterbury batsmen appeared to be following the patient example set yesterday by the young Aucklanders Reece Young and Rob Nicol. The problem for the Canterbury batsmen was their failure to find the loose balls to punish while losing wickets regularly.Drum, with pace and bounce, troubled all the batsmen, a testament to his accuracy being the three lbws and the one bowled that went towards his five-wicket bag. He finished with five for 22 from 17 overs. To Walker, the batsmen concentrated on defending, the few attacking shots they offered bringing about their demise. The leg spinner ended with four for 10 from 15 overs. The Canterbury innings had struggled to 79/5 – it fell away completely from there, the last five batsmen including the injured Warren Wisneski contributing just 15 runs.Forced to follow on 178 behind, the innings started in similar vein, Jarrod Englefield’s stay less than four overs, adding just three to his first-innings eight when the score was five. However, Stewart (35) and Robbie Frew (9) saw them safely through to 49/1 at stumps, still requiring 129 to make Auckland bat again. The highlight of the morning session was the completion of a 150-run partnership by Young (86) and Nicol (74). In the process they removed the long-standing eighth wicket Auckland record against Canterbury of Verdun Scott and Jim Blandford. Their 143 had stood since the 1939/40 season. However, most of the work for that had been done yesterday. They added just 14 in the morning session before Young gave Gareth Hopkins his fourth catch behind the stumps, this time off Stephen Cunis. The partnership ended at 153, leaving Auckland 258/8.There was long enough for Nicol to go to 74, his highest first-class score, and for Hopkins to collect his fifth catch of the innings as Auckland ended on 272.The wickets were shared, Chris Martin (three for 67 from 32), Cunis (three for 66 from 31) and Ryan Burson (three for 63 from 27.4) ending with remarkably similar figures.Tomorrow Canterbury will need considerably more application than that shown in the first innings to rescue this one.

Ipswich fighting to keep Gibbs

A major update has emerged about Ipswich midfielder Liam Gibbs, one regarding both Norwich City and Manchester United.

What’s the talk?

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Ipswich’s local rivals Norwich are interested in snapping up academy midfielder Liam Gibbs from the Tractor Boys. Gibbs is out of contract at the end of the month and Ipswich are now fighting to keep hold of the talented teenager.

The report claims that Premier League sides Norwich and Man United are both looking at Gibbs and monitoring his situation in case he becomes available.

If either side signs Gibbs upon the expiry of his contract, they would need to pay a compensation fee to Ipswich as he is still under-21.

Former Ipswich player and coach Kieron Dyer claimed in 2019 that Gibbs has a “massive future” and that he is an exciting player to watch. He told TWTD, as relayed by Suffolk News:

“Obviously when I was working at the club you don’t like to talk up individuals but now I’m not there I can say that you’ve got Tommy Smith coming through at left-back, I’d even go out on a limb and say he’s got a good chance of making his debut before the season finishes at some stage. I’ve never seen the guy have a bad game. I think really highly of him.

“First-year Liam Gibbs has come in, he’s a very exciting player. He’s got a massive future as well, so they’re the two players I’d say to watch out for.”

Ashton must avoid disaster

Ipswich CEO Mark Ashton must avoid a major disaster with Gibbs this summer. The EADT claim that he is highly-rated at Ipswich and this suggests that it could be a huge blow if they lose him at the end of the month. Ipswich could be about to watch a talented young player depart without receiving a transfer fee, with a compensation fee impossible to predict at this time, which would be a disaster for the club as he could be a great player for the future.

Dyer said that Gibbs has a massive future ahead of him and Ipswich will surely want that to be at Portman Road. He made his League One debut at the age of 18 last season, showing that the club has faith in him to perform at senior level despite his inexperience.

Therefore, he could play a bigger role in the first-team next season if he decides to stay with Paul Cook’s side instead of departing at the end of his deal.

The obvious reason as to why this would be a disaster for Ipswich is the interest from Norwich. If Ipswich lose one of their most talented academy products, as shown by his League One debut, to their bitter rivals Norwich, it would be very frustrating for the club’s supporters.

Ipswich fans will not want to see one of their own playing in yellow at Carrow Road and Ashton must work hard to ensure that Gibbs stays at Portman Road and does not join Norwich. He’s got a couple of weeks to convince the player that he should stay, time will tell if he’s able to do so.

ECB Chairman warns of burn-out risk

The Chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board is warning of the danger of burn-out in international cricket

CricInfo15-Feb-2002The Chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board is warning of the danger of burn-out in international cricket.Lord MacLaurin believes the number of centrally-contracted players, which currently stands at 12, may have to increase.”With the programme stretching out over the next four or five years, I would imagine that there may have to be more players contracted to the board,” MacLaurin told the BBC.”That would mean people are not obliged to go on each and every tour. Otherwise you will have burn-out,” he said.England’s programme over the next 12 months includes seven home Tests, a large quantity of one-day internationals, an Ashes tour and the World Cup in South Africa.”We want to prolong their cricketing lives as much as we possibly can,” MacLaurin said. “I think we have to be very sensible about it. These cricketers are married and have young families and are growing up.”We have to be very sensible about the way we care for our players and guardagainst burn-out.”
