Phillips urges Gers to sign Clarke-Harris

Kevin Phillips believes Jonson Clarke-Harris would be a good signing for Glasgow Rangers as he offers something Alfredo Morelos doesn’t.

Phillips urges Clarke-Harris move

The Gers have recently been linked with a move for Clarke-Harris, while Morelos revealed not too long ago that he is eager to move to the Premier League (Radio Caracol).

Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips has urged the Gers to move for the Peterborough striker as he offers something Morelos doesn’t. He said:

“He’s [Clarke-Harris] been phenomenal this season.

“If Morelos is to move on, him coming in gives you that different style, a plan B to have up your sleeve.

“He’s decent on the ground, he could certainly do some things better at times but he’s scoring goals.

“He gets in good positions. He gives you that added advantage that Morelos doesn’t give you in that you can whip balls into the box.

“He’s a big lad so he can get on the end of crosses and that just gives you a different option.”

Goals the most important

There is a slight height difference between the two – Morelos stands at 5 foot 9, while Clarke-Harris is taller at 6 foot. He is also slightly stronger, which does suggest the Ibrox outfit would be able to use him in a different way than Morelos.

However, they already have Cedric Itten, who is 6 foot 2, so a bigger striker is not the reason why Clarke-Harris should be signed. This term, he has 28 goals for Posh in all competitions (Transfermarkt) as they sit second in League One – he knows where the back of the net is. If Morelos leaves, he could well be a fantastic signing for a number of reasons.

Why Rangers should sign Carlos Mendes Gomes

Rangers have been linked with Morecambe winger Carlos Mendes Gomes recently and the youngster could prove to be a superb addition to Steven Gerrard’s side at Ibrox next season.

According to the Scottish Sun, Rangers could look to sign the 22-year-old after his impressive season with Morecambe in League Two and he would be available on a free transfer, due to his contract with The Shrimps set to expire at the end of the season.

Gomes is a product of Atletico Madrid’s academy but would move to West Didsbury in 2016 after failing to make the grade with the Spanish giants, before joining Morecambe in the summer of 2018.

Since then, he has made 83 appearances for the Sky Bet League Two side, in which he has contributed 14 goals and three assists, averaging a solid 6.88 rating for his performances in England’s fourth tier.

However, he has burst into life under Derek Adams this season, with 12 goals and one assist in 38 league appearances, which has helped the Lancashire side establish themselves in the playoff positions as we approach the final few games of the season.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/rangers-news-ibrox-steven-gerrard-ross-wilson-gers-rfc” title=”Latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more!”]

In a recent interview with freelance journalist Adam Goodwin, Mendes Gomes discussed his time at Atletico Madrid and claimed that during his time in Spain, he had former Real Madrid right-back Achraf Hakimi ‘on toast’ in the Madrid derby.

Considering Hakimi’s superb performances on loan at Borussia Dortmund last season earned him a £36m move to Inter during the summer, it is impressive that Mendes Gomes was able to outperform him when they were younger, and emphasises the potential that he possesses.

Therefore, considering he will be available on a free transfer this summer, Ross Wilson should definitely try and bring him to Ibrox, as he could prove to be an excellent addition to Gerrard’s side next season.

Crianças conduzem entrevista coletiva no Cruzeiro

Fresh report highlights abysmal Spurs trend

A new report has emerged and it has exposed a worrying trend of Jose Mourinho’s at Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Spurs have endured an indifferent season. Back in December things were rosy, with the north London outfit sat top of the Premier League but now in April, things have taken a turn for the worst.

They are out of the FA Cup, Europa League and their chances of making the top four appear all but over – the one thing going for them is the upcoming Carabao Cup final, though they’ll face the red-hot league leaders, Manchester City.

A lot of Spurs’ issues have come down to their defensive problems, perhaps a surprise statement considering they hold the fourth-best defensive record in the top-flight but having dropped a whopping 18 points from winning positions, their season could’ve been far, far better.

But now a study conducted by the CIES Football Observatory has highlighted another worry.

As of this month, the Lilywhites are just one of three Premier League teams that have failed to give a single minute of league action to a player aged 21 or younger.

Given their troubles throughout the campaign, it surely can do Spurs no harm if they took a step back and put one eye on the future.

By comparison, Wolves have given an astounding 16.2% of all their minutes to U21 players, even Man City are up there in fifth and they occupy the top spot, so clearly it can pay dividends to have just a little bit of faith in your up-and-coming prospects.

Of course, we have seen Mourinho hand out such opportunities, but these have come in dead rubber encounters, such as the second-leg against Wolfsberger AC in the Europa League, where Spurs were already in possession of a three-goal advantage.

The likes of Alfie Devine, Dane Scarlett, and Oliver Skipp are hugely talented and impressive youngsters, who are all more than worthy of playing some minutes at the very top level.

After Brexit, and with Spurs’ likely upcoming homegrown registration battle next season, Mourinho must do more to map out a better plan for the club’s current crop of youngsters.

This will leave Daniel Levy teeming with frustration too, as he’s less likely to make a substantial profit on these players if they are not being exposed to senior football.

Young prospects like Scarlett have cost the club nothing to develop but if he lives up to his true potential, then Levy could easily make a substantial sale on him in the future – though, not if Mourinho keeps up this concerning trend.

He has a history of it too, letting the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah slip his grasp at Chelsea, so again, the Spurs chairman ought to be feeling a little anxious over this latest report.

SAFC: Phillips on summer signings

In a recent interview, the Sunderland legend, Kevin Phillips, claimed that Lee Johnson will look to make at least two signings for the Black Cats this summer.

Speaking recently to Football Insider, Phillips, who scored 130 goals over 235 matches for Sunderland, stated his belief that his former side need to strengthen both at left-back and in attack this summer.

He said: “I think there will be a lot of change in the summer and left-back will be a position that I am sure they will look at. It is certainly an area that they need more options in. I think another striker might be signed, it depends who stays this summer.

“I am sure Lee Johnson will look to sign a left-back though because he addressed that position in the January window with [Jake] Vokins but it doesn’t look like that move will be made permanent.”

Transfer Tavern Take

Indeed, with Vokins having made just four appearances for Sunderland since his arrival from Southampton on a four-month loan deal back in January, over which the left-back has averaged a rather disappointing WhoScored match rating of 6.58, it would not appear as if Johnson has been overly convinced by the 21-year-old thus far in his spell at the Stadium of Light.

Furthermore, with the League One side appearing to be heavily reliant on Charlie Wyke’s goals – with the striker bagging 23 times in the league this season, while Grant Leadbitter is second in the club’s scoring charts with six – Phillips’ suggestion that Sunderland could also do with a new centre-forward would also seem to be founded on solid ground.

However, the calibre of player the club could go on to attract this summer will very much depend on what league they are playing in next season, with the Black Cats currently sitting five points behind the automatic promotion places with just six games to go.
