Gerrard should start Wright at No.11

Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has revealed Ryan Kent is a doubt for Dundee’s visit to Ibrox on Sunday after picking up a minor knock against Royal Antwerp in the Europa League.

What’s the word?

Kent has played a key role in Rangers’ resurgence in form this season following the break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In the second half of Thursday’s clash with Antwerp, Kent was caught by the outstretched leg of replacement keeper Ortwin De Wolf and appeared to be in some discomfort.

However, the 24-year-old soon had the last laugh after Abdoulaye Seck was sent off for handling his shot inside the box, with Rangers eventually coming out on top when the full-time whistle blew at the end of added time.

Speaking after the game, as cited by The Daily Record, Gerrard confirmed that Kent is a doubt for their upcoming game against Dundee.

He said: “We’ve shown the strength in depth we’ve got here. Jack has been incredible since he came back from his injury.

“I’d like to play him every minute in every game. He is that type you need, but you need to protect him from himself to make sure he’s available for key games.

“He’s now ready and fresh for the weekend. The same with Kent, who has a niggle. It’s nothing to worry about, but he’s played a lot of games.”

Gerrard should start Scott Wright

Kent has been involved in all ten of Rangers’ past games since the start of the new year, playing 88′ minutes against Kilmarnock before brilliantly inspiring them to their midweek win at Antwerp in a superb 45-minute display.

Given how much football that is in such a short space of time with little rest and perhaps his injury record needing to be taken into account, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see Gerrard rotate his squad with Kent dropping to the bench.

However, in his absence, Rangers may find their attack blunted a little without three of their star men as James Tavernier and Kemar Roofe have also suffered injury setbacks.

Kent’s a true out and out left winger, that much is evident by his goals against Antwerp, so others will have to pick up the slack if he receives a well-deserved rest.

However, they may not have to look much further than new recruit Scott Wright, who is almost a like-for-like replacement for the former Liverpool forward, particularly considering his Scottish Premiership record this season.

Out of all of his new teammates, only five have averaged more key passes than Wright (1.3 for Aberdeen) this season. Fewer still have averaged more dribbles per game, with Kent (1.9) and Joe Aribo (1.8) the only ones who rank higher than Wright (1.5 for Aberdeen).

It’s no wonder his old boss Derek McInnes was in awe of his former charge, with the Aberdeen manager hailing his “outstanding” performances on the training pitch.

This is precisely why Gerrard should start Wright instead of Kent in the No.11 role against Dundee, as he could offer something a little out of the ordinary and afford one of his regular starters a rest before the return fixture against Antwerp.

West Ham tipped to upgrade Dawson

David Moyes must urge West Ham United to purchase Watford loanee Craig Dawson at the end of the season, even if Danny Mills expects the arrival of a defensive upgrade this summer.

What’s the word?

While speaking with Football Insider, Mills expressed that he fully expects the Hammers to work on a deal to retain Dawson beyond his temporary terms.

But the former England defender does not expect Moyes and David Sullivan’s business in the transfer market to stop at signing the 30-year-old, who they have held a £2m option to buy since his arrival at the London Stadium in October.

Dawson had to wait until December to make his Irons debut but has since featured in 13 of the club’s 14 fixtures across all competitions, only sitting out January’s FA Cup fourth round win over Doncaster Rovers, and frequently impressing with his displays in claret and blue.

Insiders of the east London outfit have suggested that West Ham are 99 per cent certain of striking a deal to retain the Rochdale-born enforcer, and Mills believes Dawson would be a bargain if kept.

“He’s done very, very well for them up until now,” he said. “It’s a bargain, isn’t it? Let’s be honest, if you’re paying a loan fee, it will be more than that for a centre-half.

“Even if they bring in other players, why wouldn’t you keep him as a back-up to keep doing what he’s doing?

“David Moyes would have an honest conversation with him and say: ‘You’re maybe not going to play every single week, but I still want you around.’

“He seems like the sort of character that could accept that.”

Should West Ham retain Dawson?

Dawson made an instant impact once introduced to the West Ham backline, with his leadership helping Moyes’ men to keep five clean sheets in 11 Premier League outings.

The £3.5m-rated titan also scored the Irons’ vital third in January’s 3-2 win away to London rivals Crystal Palace, before netting his side’s sole effort in a 3-1 defeat to defending champions Liverpool.

Even if Moyes and Sullivan are to look at bringing another option in come the summer, like Mills expects and has been suggested, having a player of Dawson’s calibre could prove vastly beneficial in the event that the Hammers boss ever has to look deeper in his pecking order.

Dawson is proving his credentials as a West Ham player almost every week, despite being signed on the back of Watford’s relegation to the Championship, and is proving more incisive and aggressive in breaking up opposition play than Angelo Ogbonna.

Moyes lauds Ogbonna as a “magnificent” and “really important” player, yet the Italian offers fewer interceptions per game (1) than Dawson (1.5) – only Fabian Balbuena (1.8), who has not featured in the top-flight since December, offers more among West Ham’s current centre-backs, per WhoScored.

Dawson also blocks more shots (0.7) than Ogbonna (0.4) – only Issa Diop (1.3) stands in the way of a higher volume of strikes – and wins more aerial duels (2.6) than the 32-year-old (2.2) with the most among Moyes’ current centre-halves.

It is often hard to find a fault in Dawson’s performances, so if West Ham can keep the £42,000-per-week ace long-term for around just £2m, Sullivan and Moyes must get the deal done.

AND in other news, West Ham have been given a potential boost in hopes to sign a 19-goal striker this summer

Aston Villa: Gregg Evans drops injury news

Aston Villa substituted attacking winger Bertrand Traore off against Wolves with what looked to be an injury, and Gregg Evans has provided an update on the player.

The latest on Traore

Traore lasted 83 minutes before being substituted in the 0-0 draw and The Athletic journalist shed some light on the situation on Twitter as he posted the simple five-word update “Traore taken off as a precaution” among other updates on Aston Villa players.

This is good news for Villa

In his first season at Villa Park, the former Chelsea forward is having a decent campaign. The 25-year-old has featured 24 times (seven from the bench) and has picked up five goals and three assists along the way (WhoScored). He has also managed 1.6 shots and 1.2 successful dribbles per game.

Traore has been praised in the past by his former Blues manager Guus Hiddink, who said: “He is open to learn and you can teach him, you can say ‘work on this’ and he is very clever to do so.”

With fixtures coming thick and fast, the last thing Smith and Villa want are further injuries, especially when their star Jack Grealish is still recovering from one himself. Therefore, to hear that Traore was only taken off as a precaution should be a relief, and hopefully it means he can feature against Newcastle on Friday night.

In other news, many Aston Villa fans reacted to Dean Smith’s latest comments about Grealish!

Celtic: Are they missing Craig Gordon?

Very few club figures have been able to get away with Celtic’s diabolical season. Neil Lennon has already paid the price while it’s perhaps driven Peter Lawwell to retirement too.

The boardroom figure will depart Parkhead in the summer and with it, he will leave behind a number of mistakes; one of which was ensuring that Lennon stayed for so long.

On the chalkboard

Celtic are on the verge of losing their grasp on the SPFL title to their biggest rivals and there are a number of reasons why.

On the field of play, the primary reason has been their defence. Individual errors have plagued their backline with the Bhoys conceding many more goals than Rangers in the league. They also shipped a haul of 19 strikes in just six Europa League outings.

It has been a dismal campaign for a host of defenders, no less than the likes of Shane Duffy whose loan spell from Brighton has not gone according to plan. The Irishman has been littered with mistakes but so have the goalkeepers.

Vasilis Barkas was branded “awful” by Frank McAvennie for some of his mistakes, claiming the club’s recruitment needed to be looked at as a result. He cost £4.5m in the summer but has been shocking on a number of occasions. He conceded four against AC Milan and was especially poor for the opener, somehow letting a free-kick find the net on his side of the goal.

Scott Bain has arguably been no better. The stopper was another to have a horror show in Europe. When Celtic were battered and bruised by Sparta Prague in the Czech Republic, it was Bain who was at fault.

He let the ball roll across his six-yard box for the second goal and then for the fourth and final strike, the goalkeeper came racing out and failed to clear.

Youngster Conor Hazard has also had his difficulties. He was the hero in the Scottish Cup final back in December by saving a succession of penalties in the shoot-out. His performance in normal time, however, was shocking. He was bullied from a corner for Hearts’ second and then for their third, he came out and failed to punch; an action that led to a simple concession.

A solution?

It’s been difficult to find a solution between the sticks. Of course, losing Fraser Forster at the start of the term was a huge blow. Following his loan spell, he headed back to Southampton.

Though, they also lost another stopper in Craig Gordon. The 38-year-old was offered a new deal but would have to have taken a significant pay cut in order to stay in Glasgow.

Instead, he moved to Edinburgh to play for Hearts. He was second fiddle last season but was unquestionably better than all three of Celtic’s current options between the sticks. He has proven Peter Lawwell wrong in the last few months, demonstrating why he should have been offered far greater terms to stay.

You only need to look at words from Steven Naismith for evidence. Speaking earlier this season, the Hearts forward noted: “I said when we got him that he would be the best signing we’ve made by a country mile, just for his pure quality.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-hunt-stories-wagner-marsch-martinez-lennon-news” title=”The last stories on Celtic’s hunt for a new manager!”]

Naismith added: “He’s worth eight points a season on his own. He’s won us this semi-final – with having him in the goal we’re in the final. He played a bigger part than anybody else.”

Gordon exudes confidence and has made Hearts a better side. He has won games on his own for the Jam Tarts, something Celtic could have unquestionably benefited from this season.

After all, their goalkeeper’s have lost the Hoops a number of matches in 2020/21 alone.
