Six years on from stealing the show with the goal of the tournament against Uruguay at the 2014 World Cup, James Rodriguez lacked his usual magic as the Everton midfielder struggled to dazzle during Colombia’s 3-0 defeat on Friday night.

Rodriguez is without a goal since firing home a brace in October’s 4-2 victory at home to Brighton & Hove Albion, either, and offered a disinterested presence in Colombia’s attack against Uruguay.

Rodriguez’s apathetic display for Colombia saw the 79-cap international go a 12th match without a goal for his country, having failed to register a single shot on target with two of his three efforts sailing wide of the Uruguay net and the other blocked, per SofaScore.

The 29-year-old could not provide an assist for the first time since beating Qatar 1-0 in June 2019, either, as Rodriguez did not offer any key balls from 44 accurate passes, misplaced 10 of his 12 attempted crosses, lost possession 26 times, lost six of 11 ground duels and was fouled on five occasions.

He additionally failed to better his marker with any of his three attempted dribbles, while Rodriguez offered Juan Cuadrado no defensive support having been dribbled past twice without making a single tackle, interception or clearance.

Ancelotti will be far from pleased to see Rodriguez struggle so much, but ever more keen to see the midfielder come through the international break unscathed.

A princípio, a língua foi um problema, principalmente pela “ousadia e alegria” dos chineses e dos taxistas nervosos.

– Tentei aprender chinês, mas os caras só ensinavam palavrão. Tem tradutor e você fica mais largado. Aprendi a falar um monte de palavrão. Estava lendo algumas coisas em inglês. O cara para aprender chinês deve ser desenhista. Vai pegar táxi, fala inglês e ninguém entende. Eu falava: “Não entendo, não falo chinês”. O taxista começou a gritar. Eu falei que não era surdo – diz o atacante, que começou a carreira profissional pelo Barueri, em 2003.

Além da língua e das flatulências, outra situação incomodava Everton: a cultura alimentar na China.

– Fui tirar o visto em Hong Kong. A mulher foi me levar para comer cachorro. Tudo o que ela pedia, eu perguntava. Primeiro chegou o arroz. Se tacasse na parede, quebraria a parede. Só papa. Daqui a pouco chegou carne diferente. Eu falei: “Sério?”. Ela disse: “Por que você não gosta?”. Eu tenho cinco cachorros, eu adoro cachorros. Ela pediu desculpa. O povo quer saber como é, quer experimentar. Eu só como frango, carne bovina. Tudo que se mexe, eles comem. Minha esposa viu espetinho de rato. É muito nojento.

Dentro de campo, a dificuldade não era muito grande, afinal, o nível do futebol chinês ainda é fraco, como afirma o brasileiro. Em sua última temporada na China, o atacante fez 16 jogos e 3 gols pelo Shanghai Shenxin, que acabou sendo rebaixado para a Segundona Chinesa.

– Quando cheguei, nos seis primeiros meses, achei amador. Nesse ano, está crescendo muito, investindo pesado. Não em curto prazo, a China vai virar potência. Eles me pediram muita indicação de jogador. Daqui a pouco, a China vai melhorar. O nível a gente sabe que é fraco. Eles estão gostando muito de futebol e adoram os brasileiros. Brasileiro que abrir escolinha de futebol, fica milionário lá.

Um dos rivais do Shanghai na próxima temporada será o Tianjin Songjiang, do treinador Vanderlei Luxemburgo, que também disputará a divisão inferior do futebol chinês. O brasileiro, talvez, possa dar lições aos técnicos locais.

– Tive dois treinadores chineses. Foram meus piores treinadores. Era mais complicado. Eles tentavam assistir vídeo para dar treino para a gente. Um deu 365 coletivos no ano. Nunca fiz tanto coletivo na China. Ano passado, pegamos um treinador que dava coletivo com a mão. Só podia pegar com a mão e fazer gol de cabeça – completa Everton, sob risos.

O LANCE! apurou que o Shandong Luneng já enviou três propostas para o Corinthians, mas ainda não desistiu de contratar o zagueiro. Like the majority of Manchester United’s new signings, Alex Telles has been unable to hit the ground running for the most part. However, it seems as though Solskjaer prefers the new summer recruit instead, having handed him a start for the past two games in a row, whilst Williams has been left on the bench.

With two other left-backs now on the roster, competition for places has arguably never been higher. But if the outcast is allowed to leave on loan in January and impresses at St Mary’s, he could force Solskjaer to reshuffle his plans.

Aston Villa enjoyed another weekend off from Premier League action after their Friday night encounter with Newcastle United was postponed amid an outbreak in Steve Bruce’s Toon camp.

The pause in the campaign afforded Dean Smith the chance to rest some of his weary legs and set about putting together a game plan he hopes will see the Villans beat West Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers when his side next take to the field.

One name the Villa boss must ensure is on the coach to Molineux come Saturday is teen wonder Jacob Ramsey, with Smith rarely opting to unleash the young star who Academy Manager Sean Kimberley believes boasts “undoubted technical ability”.

Ramsey has not been seen on the field for a Premier League fixture in three months having played the sole 13 minutes of his 2020/21 campaign as a late substitute in Villa’s 3-0 win over Fulham on September 28.

Smith recalled the 19-year-old to the bench for last Monday’s defeat at West Ham United but opted against handing the attacking midfielder his latest senior outing, following a frequent role in the Villans’ EFL Cup efforts.

Ramsey started all three Carabao Cup ties as the Villa Park natives progressed through to the Fourth Round before losing at home to Championship side Stoke, yet offered glimpses of his potential with an assist away to Bristol City days before making his Premier League debut at Craven Cottage.

Ramsey’s progression through to the senior fold has seen him rarely turn out in the junior ranks, with just two appearances in the EFL Trophy and no outings in the Premier League 2 thus far this term.

Villa have high hopes for the England U20 international’s future in Birmingham and Smith has placed him firmly in the first-team fold to help realise that potential, with the Villans boss and his coaching team casting a careful eye over Ramsey in training.

But despite considering him to be a first-team figure now, Smith is yet to truly unleash Ramsey and must start doing so with Villa’s form nose diving from the early promise that took them to second place in the table with four wins from four.

The Villans have claimed just one win in the five league games that followed October’s narrow 1-0 win over Leicester and the 7-2 victory at home to Liverpool is now a memory looking all the more remarkable.

Smith has not been helped by his midfielders being unable to offer a consistent level of creativity, with John McGinn offering no key balls in defeat to Leeds, Bertrand Traore uncreative in defeat to Southampton and Trezeguet without a key pass in the victory over Arsenal as Ross Barkley penned six only to get injured during the defeat to Brighton.

McGinn again failed to provide a key ball in defeat at West Ham as Conor Hourihane similarly struggled before being replaced by Traore, who took just 18 touches but could only achieve one successful dribble as a point of merit.

The struggles of Smith’s more favoured options should ensure a place in his matchday squad is reserved for Ramsey come Saturday and allow the youngster of “undoubted” talent the chance to prove himself, even just from the bench.

No CT João Havelange, os jogadores vascaínos não sofreram muita pressão do adversário e deram a conta do recado, saindo de campo com a vitória pelo placar de 2 a 1.

O Vasco iniciou a partida com Jordi, Yago Pikachu, Rafael Vaz, Jomar e Henrique; Marcelo Mattos, Bruno Gallo, Matheus Índio e Willian Barbio; Eder Luís e Thalles. Com esta formação, o time se mostrou mais ofensivo e criou boas oportunidades. Aos 11 minutos, em cobrança de falta, Rafael Vaz não desperdiçou e fez 1 a 0 para o Vasco.

Na frente do marcador, o Vasco continuou em busca do gol, apesar de pecar nos passes – ponto que foi observado e cobrado pelo técnico Jorginho. Enquanto isso, o Barra Mansa não chegava com precisão ao gol de Jordi, que aparentava ser um mero espectador do jogo-treino.
