Arsenal fans fuming with potential loan swoop for Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu

Whilst Arsenal have endured a difficult season thus far from a defensive point of view – they have already conceded 31 goals in just 22 Premier League games – they have arguably made an even worse start with their form in front of goal. The Gunners have found the back of the net just 29 times in the top-flight, meaning that they have a minus two goal difference at past the half-way stage of the campaign.

Unsurprisingly, the Gunners have been linked with some options to potentially help in that department, and according to The Daily Mirror, the north Londoners have earmarked Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu as a possible candidate.

The report claims Mikel Arteta’s side are interested in making a loan swoop for the Turkey international in this January transfer window, with the attacking midfielder’s club ready to let him go.

Can you name all of these obscure Arsenal signings? Give it a go now!

After hearing about their links to Calhanoglu, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the man who has scored just two goals this season, with many seemingly fuming about the situation.

Some Gunners fans felt that Calhanoglu wouldn’t represent an upgrade on Mesut Ozil, with one supporter in particular describing the former as a “poor man’s” version of the German.

Some Gunners supporters instead expressed their wish to see Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech be signed, with one fan urging the club to “go all out for him”.

With his ability to play in numerous different positions – he has played more than 50 professional games in central midfield, attacking midfield and as a left-winger – Calhanoglu represents a versatile option that could significantly boost Arsenal’s strength in depth. Injuries could see the 25-year-old be used by Arteta in a variety of different roles, and as just a loan deal, it would represent a shrewd piece of business.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta has delivered an update on the club’s transfer plans for this January window.

Bernard the only Everton midfielder who doesn’t lack quality, says Garth Crooks

BBC pundit Garth Crooks has waxed lyrical about and named Everton star Bernard in his latest Premier League Team of the Week, and said that he is the only Toffees player that doesn’t lack quality at the same time.

What did he say?

Well, the Brazilian returned to the starting XI in the 1-0 win against Brighton and Hove Albion at Goodison Park on Saturday having been a substitute against Liverpool in the FA Cup previously, and played a key role in the victory with an impressive display against the Seagulls.

The Brazilian made four key passes – more than anyone else on the pitch – as per WhoScored, while he also successfully completed three dribbles against Graham Potter’s men.

Crooks was certainly impressed with what he saw, also comparing the 27-year-old to a former Everton legend.

He said: “This lad was only on the pitch for 72 minutes but the impact he made on Everton against a resilient Brighton side was clear.

“Bernard buzzed around Goodison Park like the legendary Colin Harvey used to – and he had to do it without players of the calibre of Alan Ball or Howard Kendall supporting him.

“That’s the problem for new manager Carlo Ancelotti – Everton lack quality in midfield, Bernard apart.”

Fair point?

Not many of the Goodison Park faithful would argue against Bernard being one of the best technical players in this Everton squad right now, and he really showed it as the Toffees got back to winning ways following disappointing back-to-back results against Manchester City and their arch-rivals.

Aside from perhaps Alex Iwobi and the currently out of form Gylfi Sigurdsson – the latter is yet to really make his mark because of injury with two goals in 20 games, and the latter has two goals and one assist in 24 appearances in all competitions in 2019/20 – the Merseyside club don’t really have that talented player capable of playing out wide or in the centre behind the strikers.

Bernard does have that ability though, and if he keeps performing like he did against Brighton then he will continue to be a starting XI regular under Ancelotti moving forward.

Sheffield United rejected by Steven NZonzi

Sheffield United made an offer to sign Steven Nzonzi this month, but the Frenchman reportedly swiftly rejected the Blades to stay with Galatasaray on loan.

What’s the word?

Nzonzi, who was once of Stoke and Blackburn, is currently in Turkey on a temporary stint from Italian outfit AS Roma.

Linked with Aston Villa previously, the midfielder has taken a substantial amount of interest in the current window, also attracting the eyes of West Ham and Everton.

However, a report from Futbol Arena claims that despite being offered the chance to go to Bramall Lane, the 31-year-old turned them down.

The outlet suggests that Nzonzi is in search of finding a more prestigious club to play for with the ultimate goal of appearing at Euro 2020 in his mind.

A former World Cup winner, it could be seen as somewhat of a blow for the Blades.

Comparisons to Vieira

Boasting Premier League and Champions League experience, this would have been an attractive signing for a club looking to cement themselves in the top-flight.

Sheffield United’s midfield might be settled with the likes of John Fleck and Oliver Norwood in their ranks but adding a player of Nzonzi’s calibre would have been an undoubted help.

Back in 2013, the Frenchman spoke of comparisons to a great midfielder of his time.

Per the Independent, he said in 2012: “It’s true many people have said that I remind them of Vieira. He was a very good player – remember, he played with Claude Makelele, so at that time France had a really, really good midfield.

“Everyone was looking to be like Vieira. I think people said it more of me because of my face, and I’m tall and quite skinny like him. He was a big, big player. I’m just beginning. I’m a little player compared to him.”

Those comparisons were from an early age but certainly in terms of his tough tackling nature, it’s rather apparent.

In Vieira’s final season with Manchester City, he made 2.2 tackles per game. Meanwhile, at Inter, he produced 3.4 tackles per outing. Last term, Nzonzi made 2.2 successful challenges on average as well.

If you compare that to those currently at Sheffield United, it would put him second in their squad behind Enda Stevens but just ahead of Chris Basham.

It’s unfortunate they now won’t have the opportunity to bring him in.

One winner and one loser from Everton’s potential move for Matias Vecino

According to a report from Calciomercato’s Fabrizio Romano, Everton are interested in signing Inter Milan’s 28-year-old midfielder Matias Vecino in the January transfer window.

The report claims Inter value Vecino at €25m (£21.2m) and contact has been established between the clubs.

Having failed to impress Antonio Conte since the Italian took the reins, the player has requested a solution to his current situation.

If that solution involved a transfer to Goodison Park, there would be a clear winner and a clear loser emerging from the Toffees’ squad…

Winner: Andre Gomes

Even though he’s still out injured, Gomes may actually profit from Vecino’s potential arrival at Goodison Park in the ongoing transfer window. Even though he’s not really been a steady part of Antonio Conte’s plans in the current campaign, as Calciomercato explain, the 28-year-old midfielder still has enough quality to become a good midfield partner for Gomes.

With a key pass every 81.7 minutes in Serie A and one goal and two assists at this point in the season, Vecino could be a creative spark that could help the Portuguese midfielder get back into the groove upon his eventual return.

And with 1.9 tackles and one interception per game, the Italian is also keen on contributing to the defensive aspect of things as well and that should enable Gomes to hone in on his creative strengths.

As things currently stand, the former Barcelona man, who returned to training on Tuesday, may well find a high-quality midfielder partner waiting for him when he is ready for first team action once more.

Loser: Tom Davies

With 1375 minutes played in the ongoing 2019/20 campaign and 13 starts in the Premier League out of 23 games in total, the 21-year-old midfielder is surely starting to find his spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting XI.

But with Vecino knocking on the door of Goodison Park, Davies may find that position under immediate threat. Seeing how both players share a similar profile, as our analysis has shown, it may be the case of Ancelotti picking one or the other and not both.

For that reason, the 28-year-old signing could push Davies out of the starting lineup and back onto the bench if he proves to be exactly what the coach is looking for.

Liverpool fans react to latest Kai Havertz update

Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz has been linked with a whole host of clubs over the last few months.

Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United are just three of those sides who have been mentioned in regards to a potential move for the 20-year-old, who scored 20 goals in all competitions last season. Liverpool, too, are said to be interested – he would set them back a pretty penny, though, with his price-tag said to be £110m.

Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

Bild journalist Christian Falk has provided an update on the Germany international’s situation, and he has said that Die Werkself are “expecting” a bid from the Reds.

This has got the Liverpool fans talking in their droves, and it seems that many would love to see him join their club.

Havertz is clearly one of the most sought-after players on the planet – at the age of just 20, he has already made his mark on the Bundesliga. As such, he would be a fantastic addition for the Anfield outfit.

Others, meanwhile, believe that his potential arrival could be linked to the future of Georginio Wijnaldum.

Wijnaldum currently has just 18 months left on his contract, and it has been said that Liverpool are open to him departing in the summer. Havertz would be an impressive replacement if the Netherlands international were to leave.

One fan, meanwhile, believes that it could have an effect on one recent signing.

Takumi Minamino can play as an attacking midfield, a centre-forward and a winger – the Leverkusen man has played in all of those roles already during his short career. It would be interesting how the Japan international would be used if Havertz were to arrive.

It remains to be seen where the youngster ends up.

Elsewhere, James Pearce makes a bold claim in regards to Joe Gomez’s valuation.

Leeds may have missed out on a gem with Rhian Brewster

Leeds were chasing a striker for the majority of January, and it wasn’t until the final week of the window that they got one through the door.

A number of different options were considered as Leeds made numerous bids for Che Adams, and they also enquired about Andre Gray.

In the end, neither man moved clubs, but one of Leeds’ Premier League targets did drop down to the Championship as Rhian Brewster joined Swansea City.

The Liverpool loanee may have only been at the Liberty Stadium for a few weeks, but his WhoScored stats make him look like a bit of a gem.

Brewster has played 353 minutes in the Championship and he’s already scored twice.

That’s a minutes per goal ratio of one goal every 176.5 minutes, a better record than Patrick Bamford’s record of scoring every 189.7 mins.

It’s not just putting the ball in the net where Brewster is excelling, the attacker wins 4.1 aerial duels per 90, while Bamford wins just 1.1.

The 20-year-old is also a bit of a creative force, playing 0.8 key passes per game, which is more than his Leeds counterpart who plays just 0.7.

United’s number nine has previously been praised for his pressing, but he’s not made a single interception this term, while Brewster is already showing his defensive prowess, making 0.8 interceptions per game.

The Liverpool loanee outdoes Bamford in almost every stat imaginable, and perhaps Leeds should have tried a bit harder to bring him in last month.

In other news, one man proved that he should be dropped on Saturday.

Steven Gerrard sends Instagram message to Liverpool youngsters after FA Cup victory

Liverpool’s purple patch seems like it’s going to continue indefinitely.

Even without Jurgen Klopp on the sideline and any first-team players in that squad, the Reds managed to seal a victory over Shrewsbury Town in the fourth round decider of the FA Cup while also keeping a clean sheet on the night.

The victory arrived courtesy of an own goal from Ro-Shaun Williams but that doesn’t take anything away from the selection of fine yet hugely inexperienced youngsters who played their hearts out and recorded an incredible victory under the circumstances.

And their achievement hasn’t gone unnoticed either.

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard was quick to react to the triumph of the young Reds, congratulating them on their victory on

Of course, they truly deserve all the praise that’s coming their way and it just goes to show how well-structured Liverpool’s squad truly is. Only the sky is the limit such is the depth within the club.

The youngsters have kept the club’s FA Cup hopes alive and the prospect of finishing the season with three trophies also lives on.

Leeds fans react to Bielsa’s comments on last week’s press conference

Things are getting a bit nervy at Leeds United. The Whites have gone through an abysmal run of form lately, winning just two of their last 10 league games, and the pressure seems to be getting to everyone at the club.Whether it’s Andrea Radrizzani firing back at the fans or the players looking nervous on the pitch, everyone is feeling the heat at the club.

Unfortunately, not even Marcelo Bielsa is exempt from this.

Indeed, the manager had a long drawn out press conference last week where he answered just five questions in 59 minutes, and this week he’s stated that he’s not happy with people’s responses to his meeting with the media before the Nottingham Forest game.

The Argentine declared that he wasn’t pleased that people were making jokes about him, continuing that he just wanted everyone to be able to understand his thoughts on the current situation in as much detail as possible.

It was quite a bizarre thing for Bielsa to say, and it was almost a bit paranoid for him to be worrying about jokes being made about his press conference, especially when you consider that he’d have to actively seek out these responses because he doesn’t speak fluent English.

Some supporters expressed that they were concerned about his mental state after these comments.

Others simply expressed that they’re feeling sorry for him at the moment.

One supporter even said that they wanted to give him a hug.

Another section of the fanbase were worried that this growing pressure that is affecting him will force him to resign from his role as Leeds manager.

In other news, Leeds may be powerless to avoid dipping even further.

Southampton fans fume at Jannik Vestergaard’s display vs Burnley

Southampton slipped to their third defeat in four league games on Saturday lunchtime as Burnley recorded a 2-1 win at St Mary’s to move into the top ten.

The game hinged on one moment of class from Matej Vydra, who brilliantly spun away from two Southampton defenders before rifling the ball beyond Alex McCarthy with a powerful left footed drive.

While much of the Saints’ problems stemmed from their lack of creativity in the final third, Jannik Vestergaard looked suspect at the heart of defence and almost handed the visitors a golden opportunity in the first half following a weak headed clearance, but he made up for his error with a last ditch challenge.

The overall quality of his display, however, was far from satisfactory.

The Denmark international has hardly featured in recent months, starting just one Premier League game since the 2-1 home defeat to Everton in early November before yesterday’s clash.

It was an eyebrow-raising decision from Hasenhuttl to include him from the outset, and these fans were left fuming by the standard they saw from the 27-year-old.

Such was the extent of the supporters’ frustration, it has even been suggested that Vestergaard should be banished from the first team squad.

The German boss didn’t use him for 11 straight league games between the end of November and January 21st, when he returned to the starting XI against Crystal Palace, so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility to suggest he could be set for another long spell on the sidelines.

Finally, this fan won the award for the most creative slice of criticism by comparing Vestergaard to a wooden horse…

Liverpool: Fans stick by Naby Keita after receiving criticism from journalist

Lots of Liverpool fans have leapt to the defence of midfielder Naby Keita after he was criticised by a journalist.

This comes after captain Jordan Henderson suffered a hamstring injury and faces up to three weeks on the sidelines. With this, comes a gap to fill in the Reds’ midfield, with the Guinea international expected to come in and deputise for the skipper. Keita has suffered five different injuries since signing for the club in 2018 and has missed a total of 23 games, as per TransferMarkt.

David Lynch of the Standard wrote that it is now “make-or-break” for the Guinean middle man and added that he is aiming to live up to his £52m hype. As a result, the Kop faithful defended Keita on social media and made their feelings clear. One fan described his analysis as “unbelievably crass”, while another believed that he was being unfair considering his catalogue of injuries.
