Arsenal fans pay tribute to Wilshere

Jack Wilshere is back in Arsene Wenger’s good books at Arsenal.

The midfielder could not buy a Premier League start in the early stages of the season, but has now been involved in six of Arsenal’s last seven league fixtures.

He has started the last three in the top flight, and is expected to be named in Wenger’s starting XI for Thursday’s clash against Crystal Palace.

Wilshere is still out of contract at the end of the campaign, however, and will therefore be free to discuss terms with foreign clubs as of next week.

The majority of the Arsenal fans have always backed Wilshere throughout his injury problems, and many are delighted that the Englishman has worked his way back into the team.

On Wednesday, the 25-year-old, who is valued at £13.5m by transfermarkt.co.uk, posted an image from a recent training session as Arsenal prepare for Thursday’s clash with Palace.

As expected, the Arsenal fans were out in their numbers to pay tribute to the midfielder, who still has time on his side after a difficult 12 months.

Mane denies rumours of rift with Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah

Liverpool may not be challenging for the Premier League title this season, but at the moment Jurgen Klopp’s men are in positive form.

The Reds are unbeaten in their last 13 top-flight games, which has left them fourth in the table, just three points adrift of second-placed Manchester United.

Manchester City are the runaway leaders with a 15-point advantage, but Liverpool can still have a successful charge in the second half of the season as they look to cement a top-four spot.

The so-called ‘Fab Four’ are largely responsible for the team’s current form.

The quartet of Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah have left opposing teams in their wake at stages this season.

So far, they have scored 59 goals between them in all competitions, but it is summer signing Salah who has been stealing the headlines.

The Egyptian international has netted 23 goals so far in the campaign and he was recently awarded with the African Player of the Year award.

Salah’s teammate Mane was also in contention for the gong, as was Borussia Dortmund hitman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Eyes would have been on the Liverpool pair due to speculation relating to off-the-pitch matters.

The Mirror reports that rumours were rumbling that Salah and Mane had fallen out behind the scenes, but the latter has denied such claims, according to the newspaper.

“We’re on the same team and we’re happy to be on the same team. We are happy to play together. We always enjoy to play alongside [each other]. We are looking forward.”

Newcastle United fans react to Shelvey incident

Jonjo Shelvey can sometimes be an influential figure on the pitch, but other times the Newcastle United midfielder lets anger get the better of him.

The former Liverpool player produced some creative moments on the pitch during this afternoon’s Premier League 1-1 draw with Swansea City.

However, for spells of the game, Shelvey lacked influence and was substituted by manager Rafael Benitez with eight minutes of normal time left on the clock.

In response to getting replaced by Mikel Merino, the English midfielder appeared to bat away Benitez’s offer of a handshake.

After the match, the manager played down the incident, claiming that it is understandable when footballers are frustrated to be substituted.

Shelvey has been at the centre of rumours that he could be on his way out of Newcastle before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

According to The Express, West Ham United are keen on signing the midfielder in a deal worth around £12m.

After this latest incident involving Shelvey, some fans are ready to say goodbye.

Shawcross simply immense as Lambert solves Stoke’s biggest problem

Two Premier League games in charge, two clean sheets and four points gained – it’s been a near-perfect start for Paul Lambert at the Bet365 Stadium despite the negativity Stoke City’s decision to appoint the former Aston Villa gaffer initially received.

And yet, we probably shouldn’t be all that surprised. Mark Hughes left behind a decent side but one that – for various reasons including formation changes and injury problems – lost all sense of structure and defensive resilience during the Welshman’s final half-season in charge. By the time Lambert was preparing for his first game as Stoke boss, the Potters had conceded 50 goals in just 23 games.

But there has been an obvious balance and solidity to the team under the Scot and the defenders who looked so ropy a few weeks ago are now putting in immense performances, clearly feeling more confident and secure in Lambert’s better-organised set-up.

That particularly rings true with Ryan Shawcross. Criticisms of the Englishman being past it are now struggling to stack up against the statistics; the scoreless draw with Watford last night saw Shawcross win eleven aerial duels, complete 15 clearances and protect Jack Butland’s goal with two vital blocks.

Stoke are steadily sneaking away from the relegation zone, but Lambert hasn’t worked miracles here. He’s simplified Shawcross’s game, allowing him to focus on what he does best – essentially, put his body on the line to protect his own box – and the 30-year-old is starting to look like a real asset for the Potters once again. The same applies to centre-back partner Kurt Zouma.

Debuchy admits he was furious with Wenger over failed Manchester United move

Mathieu Debuchy’s Arsenal career came to an end on transfer deadline day in January as he signed for French outfit Saint-Etienne.

The Premier League club announced the transfer on their official website on January 31.

Debuchy had six months left to run on his deal at the Emirates, but it was cancelled in order to allow the right-back to move on.

The Frenchman moved to the Emirates in 2014 from Newcastle United, but injuries played a big part in his decline at the North London outfit.

In total, the 32-year-old made just 29 appearances across a three-and-a-half-year spell.

This season, Debuchy featured just seven times, but none of those outings were in the Premier League.

Since returning to France, the former Lille player has admitted that he was denied a move to Manchester United.

While speaking to RMC, the right-back admitted that he was fuming with manager Arsene Wenger for preventing him from moving to Old Trafford.

“I would have liked to have left Arsenal earlier and to have played for a different club. There were moments when I was angry with the manager. There was an approach from Manchester United and he did not want me to leave.”

West Brom fans react to sublime Rondon volley in FA Cup defeat

West Brom fans haven’t had much to cheer about in the last week, but they were ringing the praises of Salomon Rondon after the striker netted a wonder strike in a losing effort against Southampton.

With the ball coming across his body on the edge of the box, the Venezuelan international used the outside of his boot to send the ball flying past the Southampton keeper to halve the deficit midway through the second half.

The Baggies still fell to defeat against the Saints, and Alan Pardew is expected to have two games to save his job after a nightmare week for the club in which four senior players were questioned by police over the theft of a taxi in Barcelona.

Boaz Myhill, Gareth Barry, Jake Livermore and Jonny Evans were all interviewed by Spanish police after they allegedly drove a taxi back to their hotel without its driver on Thursday night.

West Brom fans were scathing of yet another disappointing performance from their side, but reserved praise for Rondon. Along with a select few of his teammates, Rondon was hailed for the spirit he showed in the cup tie…

Arsenal fans believe Petr Cech is finished at the club

You know a player has had an awful game of football when they immediately log on to Twitter to take full responsibility for defeat after the match.

That was the case on Sunday after Petr Cech’s performance contributed massively to a 2-1 loss for Arsenal at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion in the English Premier League.

The legendary goalkeeper was culpable for both Brighton goals, first flapping at a corner to allow Lewis Dunk to make it 1-0, then failing to adequately stop Glenn Murray’s header going in underneath him, which ultimately proved to be the winning goal.

While the honesty of the former Chelsea shot-stopper was appreciated by fans and his performance was just one factor in the defeat, they still believe his time is up at the club and want him to be replaced this summer.

After 110 appearances for Arsene Wenger’s side, Cech is looking well past his best and is struggling with the demands of top-flight elite football.

Supporters took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his afternoon and what it means for his Arsenal career…

Revealed: 67% of Newcastle fans want Mitrovic back on Tyneside

The Toon have struggled for goals this season as they struggle to remain in the Premier League, with Dwight Gayle scoring double as many as goals as any other Newcastle player since the start of the last campaign.

It will be an added frustration then that Alexsandar Mitrovic, who scored only once for Newcastle this season before he was loaned out to Fulham in January, has hit the ground running in the Championship.

He popped up with Fulham’s second goal with a brilliant turn-and-shoot from outside the area against Wolves on Saturday evening, and has shown a physical presence in all five games he has featured in for the Cottagers so far.

The £7.2m-rated (transfermarkt.com) Serbian’s loan expires at Fulham in the summer, and if he continues to impress, Newcastle gaffer Rafael Benitez will be anxious to recall him at the first opportunity.

In our poll yesterday, Magpies fans were similarly keen to get Mitrovic back on Tyneside when the season finishes, with 67% of them saying that he should come back in the summer.

Everton fans lavish praise on Pickford

The Everton supporters are not a happy bunch at the moment.

Indeed, Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Burnley was the team’s third loss in their last four Premier League matches, which has dropped them into 11th spot in the table.

The Toffees have been pretty good at Goodison Park this season, but have been absolutely rotten on the road – winning just once in the Premier League.

A number of players have come in for criticism from the Everton fans, while a number also want Sam Allardyce to be sacked as head coach at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.

One player that has been widely praised is English goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, with the 24-year-old putting in a string of impressive performances since joining from Sunderland.

The goalkeeper, who is believed to be on £90,000 a week at Goodison Park, has been comfortably the team’s best player this season.

Pickford turned 24 on Wednesday, and Everton’s fans were on hand to pay tribute to a player that will hope to be England’s number one at the World Cup this summer.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be found below:

Jansson feels sorry for Leeds teammate Cibicki

Leeds United centre-back Pontus Jansson has admitted that he is flabbergasted that teammate Pawel Cibicki has struggled for minutes this season.

Jansson, who should be the club’s captain in the eyes of many of the fans, has been an ever-present for the Whites during the 2017-18 campaign, but his fellow Swede Cibicki has made just seven Championship appearances since arriving in last summer’s transfer window.

The 24-year-old had previously been linked with Manchester United, but it was Leeds that swooped to sign him on August 31.

The forward has not been involved in a league game for Leeds since January, and Jansson has claimed that ‘it’s pretty sick’ that Cibicki cannot seem to buy a minute of Championship football at the moment.

Jansson told Fotboll Skanalen:

“I think it’s pretty sick. We won 4-5 matches when he started and he did well, but later he did not play anymore.

“It’s the boring part of the football world with a lot of politics. I try to help Pawel every day and keep him in good mood.

“He did well when he played and he deserves more, but then I can understand the new coach who may not have seen Pawel so much.”

Cibicki is yet to score for Leeds in his 10 appearances for the club, but he has managed a couple of Championship assists.

Paul Heckingbottom’s side are without a win in their last four league fixtures, with that poor run of form leaving them down in 14th position in the table.
