Nothing less than £100m: Newcastle fans respond to surprise Almiron speculation

[ad_pod ]

According to Paraguayan journalist Markos Gonzalez, who works for Tigo Sports, Real Madrid are monitoring the development of Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron.

The 25-year-old is currently representing his country at the 2019 Copa America and has registered assists in their two matches against Qatar and Argentina.

According to Gonzalez, Real Madrid are ‘very closely’ monitoring the attacker.

Almiron joined Newcastle from MLS outfit Atlanta United in January 2019.

The South American failed to score or register an assist in his 10 appearances for the Magpies in the second half of the 2018-19 campaign.

However, he made a positive impression early on with a string of impressive performances and could be a star in the Premier League next season as he begins to settle.

It would certainly be a surprise to see Real Madrid move for the versatile attacker but stranger things have happened.

Tottenham Transfer Roundup: Two Danes on the radar, Roma interested in Alderweireld

[ad_pod ]

The intensity of this transfer window will no doubt pick up the closer it comes to an end, but so far there have been few confirmed big deals to talk about, including at Tottenham. Today’s Spurs transfer roundup includes interest in two Danish wingers and one of the club’s centre-backs being in the eyes of a Serie A side.

Interest in Skov Olsen

According to the Mirror, Tottenham are monitoring Denmark U21 winger Andreas Skov Olsen. The 19-year-old scored 26 goals in all competitions for FC Nordsjælland last season. Olsen has just one year left on his contract and so his club will need to think about selling him soon to avoid him leaving on a free.

Skov on radar

Not just interested in having one Dane on the radar, Spurs are also looking at FC Copenhagen’s Robert Skov and even made contact with FC Copenhagen in regards to the 23-year-old, according to eldesmarque.com. Celta Vigo and Wolves are also credited with an interest in the forward who scored 32 goals in 48 games last season.

Roma eye Alderweireld

Roma have their eyes on Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld according to Tuttomercatoweb. The 30-year-old has just one year left on his contract in North London.

Leeds fans expecting a better season from Harrison

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are hoping for an improvement from Jack Harrison next season after Phil Hay all but confirmed that he would be returning for a second loan spell.

The Manchester City man spent last term at Elland Road, enduring a mixed time as he scored four goals and assisted three.

This goal contribution return isn’t fantastic, but many fans are optimistic that a second campaign will prove to be more fruitful for the 22-year-old.

Marcelo Bielsa clearly has a lot of faith in the winger, and after a year of his tutelage he should know Leeds’ system very well.

Harrison did put in some of his best performances towards the back end of the last campaign with a goal against Sheffield Wednesday and an assist against Derby, and fans are hoping that he can build on that and have a better return this time around.

Roma have little chance of Sissoko swoop amid reports

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Roma are eyeing a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Moussa Sissoko, per Leggo.

What’s the word?

The report states that the Serie A club are keen to recruit a new central midfielder and are seeking to complete a deal for Jordan Veretout, the Fiorentina ace.

However, Franco Baldini, the former Spurs Director of Football, is said to have suggested Sissoko as an alternative.

Nevertheless, Leggo report that the club remain hopeful of securing Veretout’s signature by Wednesday.

Sissoko, then, appears to be very much the back-up option.

Expensive deal

Good luck extricating Sissoko from Spurs.

He enjoyed perhaps the best season of his career in 2018/19, playing a key role in midfield as Mauricio Pochettino’s men reached the Champions League final and finished in the top four.

He cost the club £30m when he joined from Newcastle United and, while he was a figure of fun at the beginning of his Tottenham career, he has blossomed into one of the most crucial figures in the squad.

Indeed, Sissoko made a total of 44 appearances for Spurs last season.

With Daniel Levy’s fierce negotiating skills and Sissoko’s importance to the club, this feels like a remarkably optimistic strategy from Roma.

They had better hope they get Veretout; there appears precious little chance of luring Sissoko to Italy.

Felipe Anderson could be West Ham’s perfect Arnautovic replacement

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Marko Arnautovic has left West Ham United and the question on everybody’s lips in east London is this: Can the Hammers replace him?

On the chalkboard

One has to examine Arnautovic’s stats throughout the 2018/19 season to get to the bottom of this and with that comes a caveat.

Arnautovic enjoyed a perfectly serviceable first half of the season but he was diabolical after January, as he effectively downed tools following the transfer saga that first saw him linked with China, and went 11 games without a goal.

Nevertheless, his stats are enlightening.

In 2018/19, the Austria international made 28 appearances for the club. He scored 10 goals and provided four assists.

Per understat, he averaged 2.78 shots per game, with an expected goals (xG) rate of 8.94. Thus, we can ascertain that Arnautovic outscored the expectation; despite finding himself in positions that he perhaps shouldn’t have scored from, he had a penchant for hitting the back of the net. He also averaged 1.62 key passes per 90, meaning that his passes directly led to a shot 1.62 times across the game.

Across the 90 minutes, his xG stood at 0.40. By comparison, Javier Hernandez had an xG-per-90 of 0.53. He only scored seven goals, though, with an xG rate of 7.89 – he scored the goals he was expected to score.

A versatile forward, Arnautovic scored six goals with his right foot, three with his left and one with his head.

Playing as a forward, he averaged 2.87 shots per 90 with an xG of 0.41 – he is prone to efforts from range, but the majority of his goals came in the box.

Indeed, understat tells us that he scored just once from outside the box while seeing nine efforts go off target. Six from range were blocked, while six were saved. His goal actually came from inside the D, too, pointing to an inaccurate penchant for shooting from outside the area. His one goal, against Arsenal, had an xG rate of 0.05 – few would have predicted it would hit the back of the net.

Anderson the replacement

Arnautovic is not the best striker around.

The fact that he outscores his xG is impressive but the same can be said for Felipe Anderson, who scored nine goals in 2018/19 with an xG rate of 5.53.

The Brazilian, a winger, also laid on four assists but had an expected assist rate of 6.78 – the strikers, namely Arnautovic, were not taking as many chances as they should have been.

Anderson also averaged a higher key pass statistic per 90 – 1.90 to 1.62 – while he was more economical with his shooting. He also missed nine shots from range but scored two, while he averaged just 1.70 shots per game.

Perhaps moving the winger into a false nine position, then, could see Manuel Pellegrini reap a fair few rewards.

Statistically, the two have a similar profile, but Anderson is perhaps a better option, with his dribbling ability and penchant for dropping deep likely to free up space for the likes of Manuel Lanzini and summer signing Pablo Fornals.

He could ultimately save the Irons a fortune.

Everton should choose to sign Jean-Philippe Gbamin over Ibrahim Sangare

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

It seems that with just less than two weeks remaining of the transfer window, the priorities for Everton are securing an attacker as well as a replacement for the seemingly PSG-bound Idrissa Gueye.

Wilfried Zaha, Moise Kean, Nicolas Pepe, Malcom and David Neres have all been linked as potential forward options, although their hunt for a Gueye replacement seems to have only two candidates as of now.

Toulouse powerhouse Ibrahim Sangare, and Mainz 05’s versatile star Jean-Philippe Gbamin.

The Toffees have been linked with a move for Sangare along with Tottenham, with an offer between €20m-€25m (£17.8m – £22.3m) reportedly enough to tempt the Ligue 1 side into negotiations.

In Gbamin’s case, Everton have spoken to Mainz about the Ivorian, and the Bundesliga club value him at £30m.

As you can see by the stats above, one man is vastly better than the other based on last season.

21-year-old Sangare betters 23-year-old Gbamin in every defensive department apart from interceptions per game, where the pair are matched with one apiece – the Toulouse man’s 3.6 tackles per game are notably better than Gbamin’s 1.6.

However, whilst it may sound foolish given the fact that Sangare is better and cheaper, Everton must opt for Gbamin.

Why? Well, the 6 foot 1 Ivory Coast international can also play at right-back as well as at centre-back, along with his natural position at defensive midfield.

You may ask what the significance of that is. Basically, with the pursuit for Kurt Zouma looking unrealistic now, Everton are extremely weak in central defence with just Yerry Mina and Michael Keane as senior options after Phil Jagielka also departed.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

Furthermore, the position of right-back is also a weak one with Seamus Coleman and the returning Mason Holgate the only occupants. The Irishman didn’t have the best of times last term (at his own admission), whilst Holgate was loaned out mid-season, meaning that neither of Marco Silva’s right-back options are standout names.

Jonjoe Kenny has also departed the club for Schalke, further weakening the area.

Sangare may be significantly better, but he isn’t versatile whereas Gbamin can cover a number of positions – coincidentally, ones that Everton are severely in need of fresh faces in.

In terms of a move making sense, targeting Gbamin over Sangare should be a no brainer.

West Ham flop Hugill tracked by Championship clubs

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

A number of Championship clubs are chasing West Ham United striker Jordan Hugill, per Lancs Live.

What’s the word?

Hugill has been a failed experiment at the Hammers, having been signed by the club from Preston North End in January of 2018 for a fee of £10m under the management of David Moyes.

He has gone on to make three Premier League appearances for the club and spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough, where he scored seven goals in all competitions.

Bristol City and QPR are now said to be interested in securing him on a permanent deal, though Preston are not interested in reuniting with the 27-year-old.

Hugill has made 137 appearances in the Championship throughout his career, scoring a total of 29 goals at a rate of 0.2-goals-per-game.

Not good enough

Hugill has never been good enough for West Ham.

The striker was bought in a blind panic after Diafra Sakho departed the club last year.

He was not given any time to adjust and has played just 22 minutes of Premier League football for the Irons.

And it doesn’t seem that difficult to comprehend why he’s struggled so much on one of world football’s greatest stages, as his goals record in the second tier isn’t overly impressive either.

Watch West Ham United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He has never been prolific and one wonders why the Hammers bothered to shell out the money they did to bring him in.

Moving him on would be a win in this window, having signed his very antithesis, Sebastian Haller, a striker who can actually score goals.

Indeed, Haller scored 20 times in all competitions last season; Hugill has never scored more than 13 in one campaign, and that came back in 2016/17, during his days with Preston.

Crystal Palace fans react as Christian Benteke wanted by Fenerbahce in £5.5m deal

[ad_pod ]

According to Turkish media outlet Fanatik, Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke is a €6m (£5.5m) target for Fenerbahce, and lots of Eagles fans have been quick to react to the rumour on Twitter.

The Belgium international has already been linked with a move to the Turkish giants this month as he enters the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park, and the recent Fanatik report suggests that Fener sporting director Damien Comolli is in talks with the south London outfit over a deal for the 28-year-old.

The story adds that it is hoped that a swift £5.5m deal can be completed, with manager Ersun Yanal wanting the centre-forward in his team for next season.

The departure of Benteke would leave Palace short of options up top as things stand though, with Connor Wickham and Alexander Sorloth the only other out-and-out first-team strikers in Roy Hodgson’s squad.

That is something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by many Eagles supporters who have had their say with one claiming his exit “would be a disaster”, however there are others who feel it is time to move the former Aston Villa man on with one individual telling their club to “take the money and run”.

An understandable reaction on both sides with Benteke only netting four goals in the previous two seasons, but with the south London outfit being linked with a double swoop for Ollie Watkins and Fedor Chalov suggests they could be preparing for a departure.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Everton’s interest in Mbaye Diagne shows Silva has made his mind up on Richarlison

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Sabah, Everton are close to wrapping up a deal for Galatasaray striker Mbaye Diagne and have had a €15m (£13.7m) bid ‘immediately’ accepted for the forward.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the report states that the Toffees decided to use the money generated by the imminent sale of Henry Onyekuru to Monaco to put towards an offer for Diagne, which has reportedly been accepted.

The Senegal international enjoyed an excellent 2018/19 campaign with 31 goals to his name across all competitions, whilst also recording four assists.

Diagne, 27, also appeared for his country at this summer’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament, helping Senegal get all the way to the final where they unfortunately lost to Algeria.

It may only be in the Super Lig, but there is no denying Diagne knows where the back of the net is.

Has Marco Silva finally made his mind up on Richarlison’s best position?

Last season, Marco Silva used his new £50m recruit in a number of positions throughout the entirety of the campaign.

[ad_pod ]

Brazil international Richarlison played as a centre-forward 11 times, but also played out on the left eight times and made 11 appearances on the right flank – it seemed as if Silva wasn’t sure what the former Watford man’s best position was.

Now, however, with the seemingly impending arrival of Diagne and the also imminent signing of Juventus striker Moise Kean, you would presume that the former Hull boss wouldn’t be planning on using Richarlison in the middle – even more so with Cenk Tosun and Dominic Calvert-Lewin already at the club.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

Additionally, another Brazil international in Bernard made 34 league appearances last term with most of them coming on the left, and was putting in some brilliant performances towards the end of the campaign.

With that in mind, you would expect Richarlison to now be seen primarily as a right-forward given the more solidified looking areas around him.

The pursuit of Diagne could very easily point to Silva making his mind up on Richarlison’s best position.

Manchester City need to reassess pre-season friendlies and concentrate on home

[ad_pod ]

It was barely a surprise when it was announced that Manchester City would be playing most of their pre-season friendlies in China this summer. After all, Asia is a lucrative market for Premier League clubs to tap into; to such an extent that the continent has become a battleground in recent years to win the populace’s hearts, minds and wallets.

In February Sichuan Jiuniu FC became the seventh club to become a part of the City Football Group, with City’s chief executive Ferran Soriano saying: “China is an extremely important football market, which we have been focused on for some time.”

It was barely a surprise too because, given the global reach the Premier League has these days, it has become commonplace to send our household names far and wide immediately prior to another gruelling domestic campaign. On this City do not deserve any special attention because plenty of clubs do it but staying with the Blues the last occasion they played a non-competitive fixture in Britain was against St Johnstone in the summer of 2016.

In the last two years David Silva and company have paraded their talents in the US and before that there was an inaugural trip to China, that time in relation to a £265m investment equating to a 13% stake in the City Football Group by a Chinese consortium. The pre-season before that saw the squad head to Australia (Manchester United’s choice of destination this summer) and Vietnam.

Watch Manchester City Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

For Manchester City fans based in the UK it can be galling – not to mention exceedingly frustrating – to have to rejig their lives in order to catch their team play after an extended absence. Last year, and the year before, it necessitated getting up at 4am. This time two of the games took place during midweek at lunchtime, with the latter of these two only available to watch via the club’s new streaming platform.

Balancing this out is the fact that the modern football supporter ‘gets it’. They know this is the game now. Furthermore, from the more magnanimous there is acknowledgement that locally based fans have the facility to see their team week in, week out and the inescapable truth is that City no longer belongs to east Manchester. It belongs to the world.

Even so, it’s tempting to think that City have missed a trick this summer and especially with the benefit of hindsight. Last month an editorial published by China’s state-run news agency cited the travelling party’s ‘attitude of arrogance’ and was damningly headlined: ‘Chinese fans’ love for Man City goes unreciprocated on home soil’. The accusation was swiftly rebuked by Pep Guardiola but the PR damage was already done and it could be said that the club’s attempts to win the country’s hearts, minds and wallets had all been in vain.

Now imagine if instead of journeying thousands of miles away –with the incalculable organisation required – City had played Bury at Gigg Lane. Their neighbour is currently experiencing financial turmoil that is threatening their very existence and they could surely have done with the fillip of a full house. The same can be said of Bolton Wanderers, another North West mainstay in serious trouble.

Agreeing to such fixtures would have been win-win with another win thrown in. For the City players there would have been no uprooting or tiring jetlag. For local kids, who may usually be unable to afford or attend matches at the Etihad it would present a chance to see their heroes. From a PR perspective, meanwhile, it’s gold-dust. There’s the much maligned City helping out their neighbours and showing they haven’t forgotten where they have come from.

It’s fine to promote your brand across the world. It makes perfect sense to do so. But perhaps some parity is needed when it comes to scheduling Premier League clubs’ pre-season games. And a reminder too that love begins at home.
